Fantastic experience, bottle was singing. Opened and slow ox'd 2 hours, then double decanted an hour before service. Enjoyed over 2 hours. On opening, screaming acidity that blew off into bright raspberry cherry and fruit with leather, clay pot, and earth notes. Still bright ruby fading to orange near the rim. Purchased from Chambers St Wines.

Fill almost 1cm into neck. Cork in very good shape. Unfortunately, the wine was less well preserved. Second bottle from a Chambers cellar purchase, and both seem quite advanced, despite good fills and corks. Nose predominantly of tea and some roasted cherry. Some tannin and plenty of acid, but a lack of fruit except a nondescript cherry sourness. Fairly short finish.

Crumbled cork, but wine was fine, med- garnet.

This showed a lot of evolution in the glass, transforming into a completely different wine after an hour. At first, a medium intensity nose of classic floral with soy and savory notes and a bit of red berry. After an hour, meaty, smoky, tarry, though floral notes persisted. Good acidity. Very fine tannins. Very nice wine. Unlikely to improve.

Knights of Alba (KOA) BYO Barbaresco Dinner (Legacy Records): Well aged with leather and a slight bit of fruit but still this general impression that there is life left in this bottle. Very classic old Nebbiolo.

This one actually still had some fruit left and then a kindof sour note which kept the wine in a decent balance. It was a solid wine without jumping out (funny because that's also how I think of the producer - have never been really wowed by the wines but have never been totally disappointed either). Decanted two hours before serving. Deep garnet, somewhat youthful appearance. Initially strong port-like aromas before evolving into more chocolate, mustiness, and truffle. Medium-plus body with medium-to-medium-low acid and tannins fully resolved. Delicious cherry fruit on the palate along with some raspberry and a bit of savory grilled herbs. While the nose gave away the age, the flavors were very reminiscent of a five year old pinot noir with whole cluster fermentation. Tasty and enjoyable, but perhaps the only thing interesting about it was its age.

DC Crew's Gem Tasting - 3rd Annual (Palena - Washington, DC): I had no idea what to expect with a Barbaresco this old, and that was part of the fun of drinking it. The color is an auburn red. The first aromas out of the glass were blood and iron. Aromas developed into dried cranberry, violets and hints of balsamic. It wasn't vinegary, but it had that rich aroma of balsamic that I love. The tannins have softened, but they still provide structure, and the acid was high. The flavors were really interesting, starting off with corned beef and peppercorn, later some flavors of oregano, dried cranberry, meat drippings and iron. Acid lingers on the finishing, keeping the wine fresh. This is one of those wines that you can critique and analyze all you want, but in the end it's about the experience. And I absolutely loved the experience of this wine.

Light garnet color. Smoky, earthy nose with pungent herbal and caramel notes. Great grip and persistence on the palate, this is still going strong.

Excellent fill, immaculate cork. Double-decanted off sediment several hours before service. Pretty floral/strawberry aromas and pleasant enough on entry, tannins completely resolved, but this bottle never overcame its acidic/volatile sharpness on the back of the palate.

A little rose amber color that darkens some in between the initial decant and drinking it that evening. This is fully mature, but in a spot that I love. Rose petals, dark cherry fruit, with a ferrous and meaty streak. This has fruit, but plenty of savory that blends beuaitufllyp to come to a greater whole. Sappy and broad on the palate, yet with an effortlessness and ease to drinking it, with excellent inner perfume: dried rose petals and finishing with some bouillon and umami notes on the back end. I love this phase of nebbiolo. Rich and expansive, yet graceful and still with a lift to it. Drinking for me still at peak. I cannot imagine it getting better than it is but this bottle is humming along nicely. Lovely and a solid showing. I really like the '67 Produttoris. 93

Double decanted int he AM and drunk over several hours and the following morning.

A beautiful inviting nose with rose, some hint of spice and balsamic notes. Surprisingly youthful still (in context). Supple and deep with great balance, carrying its midnight frame with a sense of gracefulness and subtle force. A few ounces were left over in an open bottle overnight, and the wine had gained weight, and sense of sappiness. Still with cooler cherry fruit, but now with a little leather and meatiness on day two. Rich yet not heavy, and with a softness that coupled with its subtle power beautifully. This bottle had a little more perfume and a sense of harmony, if a little less weight and presence than the Cavalieri bottling (which from my understanding is likely the same wine). Very long on day two with more perfume and balsamic notes on the back end. For me, a terrific overachiever and the most exciting bottling based on expectations of the night. 93

2 hour decant. Gorgeous earthy bouquet but a bit of a muted palate initially. 20 minutes later and it began to show more fruit and pedigree but never fully got there by the time we consumed the bottle. Given more time to breathe and I believe this would have been a glorious wine.

These were just so much fun to drink, and had so much old Nebbiolo character for relatively little money. Balsamic, dried flowers, tar, orange peel, cherries, etc. Still had nice acidity but tannins were fully resolved (notably, just a bit of sediment in each bottle). Granted, it was not the last word in finesse that you get from an aged Giacosa or Monprivato, but per dollar these bottles were great fun. Drink 'em if you got 'em.

Opened at a charity dinner for our local hospital's foundation. I knew it was a leaker, and had stood it up for a month. The cork obviously failed, the bottle sticky and the cork soft and soaked to the top. I decanted the sediment, leaving about 1/4 in the bottle before rinsing and pouring back into the bottle. The wine was definitely oxidized, trying to mimic the nose of tawny port. It was way more advanced than the humble '64 Spanna I opened with it. However, the color still had some red; so light and clear some thought it was a rosé. The palate was still of interest, with some red fruit, but dominated by dense caramel and mushroom. It was definitely a flawed bottle, but held some interest and provided enjoyment

Roses and tar, with cherry fruit, meatiness, leather, and balsam on the nose. Mid weighted, simultaneously having breadth and sap coupled with lift and tension with a lovely inner mouth perfume. A cohesive with the floral, fruit, and savory notes all coming together beautifully, and add a subtle herbal background that adds to the other typical aged nebbiolo notes. An excellent Barbaresco drinking at peak in this format. Lovely.

A more youthful color than the '64 Riserva Especial. A mature nose with red fruited nebbiolo fruit, cherry, roses and a little tar. This is in a great place. There is a softness with good breadth without any heaviness. Mid weighted, balanced, and with a great mix of savory, fruit, tar, and florals. Nothing really stands out in this wine, but everything is in harmony. A little wet saddle leather and umami notes on the back end. This is a sound bottle in fine shape. Very pretty, and drinking in a great spot right now. Outstanding. 92
