NV Valdespino Brandy de Jerez Solera 1897 Gran Reserva (Sherry Cask Matured)

White Blend more

BI WINE Note:
Starting at the beginning, the name Valdespino dates back to the 13th century medieval knight, Alonso Valdespino, who was granted a plot of land by King Alfonso X the Wise. For centuries, Alonso Valdespino’s family made marvellous sherry on this plot of land and it is probably the oldest bodega in Jerez, the name becoming synonymous with the greatest sherry.

With direct access to great wine, sought-after sherry casks, perfect cellars and fine palates, the family naturally began aging a bit of Brandy de Jerez for their own consumption and we have luckily been given a tiny parcel of this particularly old brandy that is outright spectacular! Made using a solera system that dates back as far as the 19th century so it includes eaux-de-vie that, on average, has been aged more than 50 years, some of it is well over 100 years…

So this is an incredible brandy that only Valdespino could ever bottle – a hugely impressive, elegant mammoth, with concentrated, rich, smooth roundness, full of intense complexity, developed over several decades in cask…

Aged in the solera system for over 8 years. A bit too sweet for my taste, and lacks the lightness and balance of the best dessert wines.

8 years old, the only bottling of Moscatel until you get to the Toneles. The line is that they call it Promesa because it promises to eventually become Toneles. I like this a lot, very fresh and cool-toned with a touch of mint, juicy and easy to drink.

Lovely brown color with nose of of figs and brown sugar. Toffee pudding, figs and brown sugar on the palate with nice acid. The alcohol gives a warmth on the finish but not on the tongue. Yummy for a non-Sherry aficionado.

What a magnificent wine!
As a lover of Moscatel, this is simply one more magnificent bottle. The beautiful tea-notes, the fantastic acidity, the length, the complexity, balance and pleasure…
And the price point? Unbelievably attractive!

Lovely!

Will live and evolve for a lot of years.
(They should put a vintage on it, at least the year of bottling this lovely juice.)

Quality wines of Spain Imports (MK, Chicago IL): nose: tasty nose filled with creme brulee, honey, and some caramel tones

taste: very good medium feel that has a smooth texture and well balanced tones of roasted nuts, creme brulee, and warm caramel

overall: a good everyday or after dinner sherry. Good balance on both the nose and palate with a real good feel as well

Amontillado tocado de dulce más que decente.

Caramelo, tofee, nueces, madera vieja, salinidad y tiza.

Uva pasa, sal, madera viejas. Redondo.

Quite round and ample for an Amontillado. Not quite right? Not quite sea salty and edgy enough?
I agree with Brooklynguy that this is perhaps a little sweet for a true Amontillado and certainly agree that it lacks complexity. I would also not buy this again as it's not quite what I am looking for. OK, but a bit commercial perhaps...

This does have PX added so it is sweet for an Amontillado but I don't find it lacking in complexity and looked forward to a glass each night after dinner -- even if it is a sort of guilty pleasure. Roasted nut, caramel and citrus.

Beautiful creme brulee/burnt butter nose, quite caramel, also some orange peel. Quite sweet, but in check and not cloying. A slightly off yeasty note in the mid-palate is the only downside.

Caramel nose indicates the sweetness to follow. A slightly syrupy start gives way to a salty mid-palate and then back to the sweetness, with a long finish like some sort of almond cola. On a good day this is interestingly peculiar. On a bad day it's just weird.

Shocked at how sweet this is, too sweet really, in that the wine tastes sweet and doesn't show the balance and complexity of any other Valdespino wine that i've had. i'll pass on this going forward. Originally made for the American market, and that explains that.

Мне лично по душе такой херес. Без лишней кислотности со слегка горько-сладким миндальным послевкусием. Коньячный вкус с легкой карамельной сладостью, что очень даже неплохо.

I'm hoping that someone will recognize this label...
The bottle, first of two, appears to be at least 80 years old; perhaps more.
Purchase at auction with high shoulder fill, re-corked and wax dipped.
Beautiful rich yet subtle aromatics, great complexity but not overwhelming.
No perceptible sweetness on the nose and very little on the palate.
Yeast dominated aromatics but also nutty and savory notes.
Very long finish.

Textbook amontillado. A bit too much alcohol - noticeable alcohol burn. Confirms that I tend to prefer fino to amontillado. Still enjoyable. Drank with our last tray of iberico from our trip to Valencia pre-Covid.
