Dark red in colour with the faintest hint of bricking at the rim. The nose is quite floral, offering up aromas dark cherry, plum, tomato leaf, dried herbs and the faintest hint of smokey oak. Although medium bodied on the palate, this wine still packs a punch. There is good length and plenty of grippy tannins - which are a little obtrusive. Although pretty well balanced it's perhaps not totally integrated. Time will tell whether the tannins soften before the fruit starts to fade. If so, this will be a very nice drink. I'd suggest this wine will still be very much alive and kicking in at least 8+ years.

Decanted for an hour prior to serving. Mostly red fruit with lots of cherry and strawberry, but with hints of black fruit and liquorice. Some blood orange too. This is nicely balanced and not overly extracted. Any oak is very well integrated. Medium acidity. Tannins remain fairly powdery. After sleeping for 11 years, this is starting to open up and reveal the inviting contents within. I reckon this needs another 5 years to be at its peak but is very serviceable now. 92-93 pts

In keeping with the vintage, this is a ripe, concentrated wine with good structure and colour. It offers aromas of plum, black cherry, vanilla and blood orange and has an interesting sweet and sour profile on the palate. Although mouthfeel is silky, the tannins are relatively firm and could do with a bit of softening. Acidity is good and the finish is quite long and minerally, with a bitter, citrus/pithy element. Although enjoyable now, its best years are definately infront of it.

More approachable than previous bottle. Red berries, black cherries and blood orange intermingle with subtle hints of wood and vanilla. Round and relatively approachable on the palate which finishes with good length. There is a nice pithy-minerality here too. Better in five+ years.

Drunk over a couple of days and showed well both evenings. A lighter weight Pinot that is clearly well made. Bright red strawberry and raspberry, sweet and sour cherry, and some earthy iron notes. Refreshing acidity with solid length for the appellation. Tannins are powdery and fine. Probably a bit young to fully appreciates and I think it’ll be singing in another 5 years. Still, really pleasurable to drink now.

This is a lovely Volnay singing from the outset. Perfumed nose of sweet red berries, cherries, blood orange, some earth, and a lifted floral note that I can’t put my finger on. Really attractive. On the palate this is lithe and silky with fine integrated acidity providing excellent line and length. Tannins are resolving with a bit of grip remaining. First class for the appellation. Drink now or hold for 5 years.

A very fine Volnay. Just delicious on the nose - highly floral and purfumed with cool but sweet red berry and cherry. Refined on the palate which is silky and nicely focused. Drinking well now and should develop nicely for another 5 years or so.

A generous wine offering up an interesting bouquet of ripe red fruit (especially cherry), blood, smoke and subtle spice. Notwithstanding the vintage, this is quite elegant, yet juicy, on the palate with moderate concentration and intensity. Tannins are round and smooth and well balanced by the acidity, lending a subtle tang to the finish. Not sure how this will age, but probably best drunk within 5 years of vintage while the fruit is bright. In essence, a great wine for the price and level.

Fruit profile on the nose was consistent with previous tastings, with plenty of cherry and red berries. There was also, however, an overpowering funky edge that wasn't present previously. This was accompanied by a hint of popcorn and a slight herbal streak. Brett? Not sure, but it didn't blow off over 3 hours. Palate was quite sound - a nice amount of fruit sweetness, but well balanced by a tangy finish.

A solid effort that is more consistent with my note from Nov 2011, than March 2012. The trump card of this wine is its generous and juicy cherry/cherry pit fruit - there is also a hint of blood and vanilla too. This reminds me of a cru Beaujolais, but lacking a little structure, complexity and intensity of the better examples. Acids are approachable and tannins round and in the background. Light-to-moderate concentration. Clean and very, very tasty!

Tasted from barrel at the domaine. An excellent Bourgogne rouge that has plenty of flesh on its bones for the appellation. Quite dark for the vintage. Red and black berries, floral tones and some earth. Acidity is good and there are some dusty tannins.

Smashing wine. Suave and powerful. Perfectly ripe and exotic red and dark berries, violets, soil, a hint of aniseed and some iron shavings. This receives more oak than the other wines here (about 80% I think). There are some oak notes on the nose but these is not prominent and will get swallowed up well before this hits its plateau. Clearly grand cru weight. A wine for the long haul.

Opened 2 hours before drinking. Not decanted. This Bachelet CdN Villages has much more class and elegance than is typical for this level and is punching well above its weight. The fruit is bright and fresh, with dark cherry, cherry pit and red berries intertwined with violets, spices and twigs. Light on the palate but good intensity and concentration for the appellation. Quite refined. Not tons of complexity here, but very tasty. Drinking well now but should hold nicely for another 8-12 years.

Barrel tasting at the domaine. Similar in weight and flavour profile to the Bourgogne. Tannins perhaps a bit rounder. Denis suggested both this and the Bourgogne should rest 7-10 years in the cellar.

Barrel tasting at the domaine. Similar weight, but a little more intensity and complexity than the GC villages. Fruit was a little brighter, with some citrus notes that I didn't detect in the villages. Plenty of red fruits and earthy tones. Very floral and a strong mineral line that charges through to a long finish. Tannins are round and supple.

Barrel tasting at the domaine. Clear step up on the previous wines. Good presence. Classy and suave. Great depth for a villages - the benefit of old vines! Crisp fruit, with red and dark berries, cherries, floral notes, some mossy/earthy notes and a lick of oak. Fresh acidity with no sharp edges. Polished tannins. This will be lovely in 10+ years.

A fascinating Fleurie from 30 year old vines grown on basalt rich soils, fermented in cement and raised in a resin vat. Not sure whether this was fined or filtered, but a slight cloudiness in the wine suggests not. Incredibly tasty and moreish - with tangy red berries, aromatic herbs, pomegranate juice, fennel, wet earth and a stalky pine resin resulting in a moderately complex flavour profile. Very fresh on the palate, which is balanced, transparent, well focused and carried by a persistent acidic spine. My first Balagny, but a producer I will seek out in the future. Drinking well now (give it an hour to breathe) or hold.

A lovely central Victorian shiraz. This has entered a nice zone - it opened up after an hour in the decanter revealing restrained aromas of blackberry, blackcurrent, pepper, liquorice and a touch of eucalyptus and oak. It's medium weight on the palate and tannins are still present but well integrated. There's a a nice weight on the mid-palate and the acids give the wine a good line - though perhaps it could open up a bit more on the finish. Although drinking well now, with proper storage, I'd suggest this has a good 5-8 years left.
