Lite garnet red. Pungent red raspberry notes with a hint of eucalyptus and cherry cough syrup on the nose. High-energy with notes of dusty red berries and a hint of alkaline. Distant notes of earth and if cherry cough syrup, but not in an overly distracting way. This is nice but not my preferred style.

Lighter weight in style, good purity but pretty straightforward, with lighter red berry notes, medium acidity and a nice purity. There just isn't much structure or energy. This hasn't shown much movement since first tasted five years ago, nor would I expect any real evolution from here. The vintage dictates in this case.

Classic Barolo on the elegant side. Roses & Tar on the nose, followed by delicate strawberry, raspberry, mushrooms & some lovely balsamic like acid. Tannins are clearly present but not intrusive. Of course this will be better down the road. No harm to open now. We enjoyed it at Cascina Spinasse in Seattle with some rabbit tortellini, risotto al castelmagno & a capunet of beef, pork & veal in a Barolo vinegar sauce. One of the best 09 Barolo I have had.

A wonderful, pure expression of Nebbiolo fruit, with aromas of candied strawberries, wild cherries, rose petals, sweet herbs and licorice notes. This is well structured around fine, silky tannins ending with incredible length. However, patience will be required here, as this will need time to develop further in bottle

Tasted at the winery. I lost track of how many Barolos we tried on our trip and didn't take notes on many of them, but this was by far the wine of the week. Absolutely wonderful nose of sweet strawberries, raspberries and other red fruit with dried roses and dark fruit with some caramel. A bit of licorice on the palate as well. I could not get over the purity of this wine and full transparency of fruit. Power without weight. The tannins are present on the finish, but only add to complexity and thankfully the grip keeps the flavor in your mouth for over a minute on the long finish. I can't wait to try this again. A real eye opener for me.

Served blind, Father’s Day lunch with Spanish pork steaks & grilled Angus steaks, smelled like an old Burg at the start but after about an hour sweet, slow oxed for 12 hours, guessed Barolo with at least 20 years age, 2009, sweet bubble gum nose, feminine palate, guessed Giacosa, beauty of a nose, pretty wine, kept getting better in the glass, tar, picked up weight after 2 hours, Steiner flower day

Dinner with friends; grilled steaks with pimento herb butter; roasted red potatoes and grilled asparagus.

The wines:
2009 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto (95)
2010 Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste (95)
2010 Azienda Agricole Le Ragnaie Brunello di Montalcino (91)
2007 Domain Giraud Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition (No Score)

The Giacosa had a delicate, but dark red color. Simply lovely on the palate, it is very much in a beautiful drinking window now.

Piedmont 2013, Day 3 - Visit to Bruno Giacosa (Neive, Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy): Like the Santa Stefano (the other 2009 in the line-up), this came across as a rather plush, forward Barolo, especially from a vineyard like Le Rocche del Faletto. Very good though. It had a really fresh nose of ripe dark cherries and red berries, even some brighter pomegranate aromas, and then rose flowers and some meaty, savoury notes. The palate showed a lot of mouth-filling fresh fruit, with juicy black cherries and plums, and then a touch smoke, earth and savoury meat, all held in velvety tannins. The long, plush finish showed a nice interlace of spice and mineral. It had a very soft, but very fresh feel on the back-palate. This was very pleasing, with a nice fullness to it, yet with a decent enough sense of well-integrated structure; and while comparatively a very easy wine, it is still a bit too firm to be enjoyed fully now. Excellent stuff. I do think it will soften relatively quickly though, probably starting to show well within the next 4-5 years. It will not be the longest lasting wine however – I cannot help feeling that this is one for the midterm, say 10, maybe 15 years, rather than for the long-haul, but it should be a real peach of a wine at its peak.

Drinking well now. Has thrown a bit of sediment, bricking throughout. Plenty of cherry and earthy notes, with a zingy cherry finish. Juicy and well balanced, with elegance to spare. Quite good.

Auzone Brunello vs Nebbiolo (MK) #6:

Inviting nose with strawberries, anise, mint, floral notes, orange peel, medicinal notes and earl grey tea. A little volatile.

Cool and fresh feeling on the palate, feather light and elegant, strawberries, sweet red fruit, slightly thin midpalate. Metallic structure.

Yes! This Giacosa Barolo is open for business. It has really evolved in the last year. A beautiful aroma of delicate red fruits flows from the glass. Candied fruits, anise, and roses wash over the palate in elegant balance. Giacosa takes it to another level. Give it 30 minutes in a decanter, but it is equally rewarding to taste it open up in the glass. Superb!

Wide, intense and immaculately seductive from the first sniff with everything a Grandios Barolo can deliver. Dark sexy wonderful perfume lies over roses in all its glory, surprisingly dark fruit that rocks with power and determination, but still in an elegant way. Dark ripe raspberries, coarse strong stone that reminds you of the rocks of a mine, tar, autumn leaves and some balsamic vinegar. Pretty full-bodied Barolo who strikes in a surprising way with his immediate power that also brings charm. Iron fist - velvet glove - oh yes. Sublime fruit quality with dark raspberries, red fruit, licorice tone, balsamic vinegar, graphite, tar and coarse salty tone that really shows depth and Rocche's soil. Long complex and really structured finish. The acidity keeps the wine fresh, and the tannins are firm and distinctive, but the fruit absorbs and balances the tannins in an excellent way. The very best 2009 vintage I have tasted and is surprisingly cellar worthy. This is 15 years of wine. Fantastic!

Light rose syrup color. Spicy cinnamon and strawberry nose. Delicious notes that reflect the nose with cinnamon and strawberry predominating. Very light-bodied, but with enough buttressing tannic structure and acidic balance that I suspect it has a decade or more of good drinking ahead.

Much more approachable than expected, with a classic Barolo nose of perfumed licorice and tar. On the lighter side, though hardly delicate. Strawberry/raspberry on the palate, with dominant tannins and a balsamic aspect on the finish. Should be beautiful in 3-4 years. May not last 15 though.

By the glass. It is ridiculous to put the best winemakers at the end of tasting, when palate suffers from fatigue. Even with that, in the mouth it is powerful, representative and at the same time soft and dusty. Long tannic finish with a bitter cherry aftertaste. On the nose, however, it is much more shy but delicate and elegant with memories of wet soil and immature plums. No tar notes developed yet. Great Barolo.

Gran Barolo.
