2005 29 Songs Syrah Back Porch Block Suscol Creek VineyardNapa Valley more |
1/15/2011 - Dale M wrote: 91 pointsDecanted 1 hr. I own exactly 0.0% bottles of either Napa or Sonoma wine, so what exactly lured me into a Napa Syrah from Garagiste? The good price? Cool label? Hard to say, but I was feeling frisky I guess, and was rather pleased to see this arrive in the warehouse soon thereafter, allowing me to see what was what. The nose threw off what can best be described as Duraflame tones, not bad mind you, just a little different. This soon subsided as more familiar waves of traditional campfire smoke, fresh picked blackberries, and violets took over. Fans of Copain (especially ‘the new style’) will certainly applaud what was in the glass here: Very elegant Syrah, classy raspberry dominated fruit that was backed by a brilliant streak of orange peel, odd descriptor I know, but it was there plain as day, and most definitely worked well within the context of the wine. I don’t think any full clusters were used during fermentation, as I didn’t pick up on the telltale resiny / olive notes one would associate with stems. Just a modest suggestion of wood rounds out the finish, satisfying and complete. Wish I had bought more of these. A great buy sub $30; perhaps I would be a buyer at the normal retail price which I think was around $45 or so. 2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

7/1/2009 - Dale M wrote: 89 pointsFrom the nose alone, I would have probably guessed this was a new world Grenache vs. Tempranillo, as a moderately concentrated blast of spicy oak laden cherries, road tar, and tints of fresh herbs (as it evolved in the glass tea oak subsided quite a bit). Dark and concentrated, this clearly has a modern polish and feel to it, offering copious amounts of ripe, dark fruit, very lush and clean with the oak notes repeating from the nose. Dips somewhat on the on the mid palate, but I liked the way the chewy tannins balanced out the front half of the tasting experience. My intuition would guess that a couple of years might bring out a little more personality than it’s present state, so patience might be advised here. |

2016 Abeja Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valleymore |
7/9/2021 - Dale M wrote: 93 pointsDecanted 3 hrs. Comes across initially as a bit tannic a touch of heat. Soon though, a very attractive wine merges. 16 was another hot (so we thought in 2016) vintage and perhaps that accounts for the initial perceptions, but the wine has a lovely core of dark cherry fruit and a slivers of tobacco - very fresh too. In Red Mt reds, I often notice a dusty character, but here, it felt like hot rocks, perhaps Graves via WW? A fun comparison for sure and a really fun wine that I think will age really well. 10/6/2023 - Dale M wrote: 93 pointsDecanted 6hrs. A Martin Steinley rec and purchase, and very happy I pulled the trigger. Admirable purity, this sports both savory red fruits which flirts a bit with some sexy dark fruits a times, a winning combination for sure. Acidity is at a perfect level, in perfect harmony with that wonderful 2016 vintage structural elements. This will age really well and worth the early look. |

11/28/2008 - Dale M wrote: 91 pointsA big step up from the Cristom wine, this baby is loaded with structure and class. A masculine pinot, (though in no way was this jammy or oaky), that conveys strength and tension through and through. A nose of crushed mint leaves and rose spices, great acidity and tannin, solid and persistent on the finish. My last bottle though this would easily last a decade, perhaps longer. |

11/3/2007 - Dale M wrote: 91 pointsThis was my first bottle from this producer. Decanted 30 minutes. I purchased this on a recommendation from Dean Reiman from the Wine Shack in Cannon Beach OR, whose palate I trust immensely. The nose has really yet to develop here, giving slight hints of the powerful fruit lurking in the glass below. A powerful presentation of velvety red cherry and red currant, touches of licorice and dusky spices. Little or no oak impression. The acidity is wonderful, expanding the wines flavor on a whirlwind tour through all corners of the mouth. The finish is paced and measured, excellent wine. Fans of Belle Pente, Evesham Wood, or Cameron should seek out this producer if they haven’t done so already. |

2/3/2008 - Dale M wrote: 86 pointsInitially served a little bit too cold, as there was absolutely notta on the nose, palate, or anywhere else. As the wine warmed, a delicate, easy to drink quaffer emerged, that charms in its simplicity. Melon rinds on the nose, a waxy, soft texture and mouth feel, spurts of acidity poke through now and again in the form of citrus flavors. A bit out of season for February, but one to revisit on a warm summer evening. The price of $10 is well spent here. |

5/28/2007 - Dale M wrote: 88 pointsFrom Garagiste. I believe this is predominately cab franc with a splash of sangiovese. Initially displayed a very plumy nose, combined with touches of mineral and a bit of wet earth, indeed almost Bordeaux esque. I liked the wines tobacco profile, both in bouquet and in flavor, adding additional facets to the bright red fruit. The sangiovese provides a nice, pleasing touch of acidity to keep things moving along. A unique blend and worth buying again at some point. |

7/7/2007 - Dale M wrote: 89 pointsThis is an enticing little Bolgheri concoction of cabernet franc with a little splash of sangiovese to keep things interesting. Spicy red berries are found on the nose, along with traces of tobacco leaf. Witty and playful in the mouth, sporting a nice interplay of blackberry fruit and wet earth, sound acidity, and a medium length finish. Though the cab franc gives the wine a certain earthy, Bordeaux element, the wine could never be mistaken for anything but a very pleasing Italian red on a beautiful summer night. |

11/22/2009 - Dale M wrote: 89 pointsLarge scaled in almost every sense, the wine is very dark in color and somewhat thick in texture. Lots of oak on the nose, but not obnoxiously so. Aeration brought out some violets and an interesting brown spice complexity. The blackberry flavors carry a distinct smoky edge, round and polished. The Petit Sirah tannins arrive late, but with no shortage of muscle or strength. Give this another 2 years or so to allow the wine to integrate could notch up a point or two. This wine is a good example of my shortcomings with a majority of WA wines. Technically well made yes, but hard to really draw any real distinction or separation from the prototype of a nice, well made red wine. Then when price is factored in to the equation (this was a gift but I’m sure it was at least $40) I’ll be moving on to the Cotes de Rhone isle. On the flip side, there are a minority of producers in this State (but growing rapidly) that make world class wine, and are worth seeking out. |

4/27/2008 - Dale M wrote: 93 pointsDecanted 1hr. As expected, big big wine here, and make no mistake as putting your nose in the glass indicated that we’re not to far away from Port territory. Very ripe prunes and raisins are nicely buffered by a powerful note of high end dark chocolate, a tint of orange peel and a nice gravelly, asphalt layered finish. Such a different experience from a standard red table wine, that while I wouldn’t want to drink this with great regularity, yet the break from the norm was a lot fun (I should mention there was a ton of sediment in this bottle). |

2/25/2006 - Dale M wrote: 94 pointsAs my elders have scribed many a time that Amarone needs a little bottle age, I finally felt it was time to pop one of my first of three at the Asteroid cafe (this popped my Amarone virginity BTW). I loved this wine. Decanted 1 1/2 hrs. Great port type nose, exhibiting espresso, dark chocolate and a wonderful floral quality. Almost solid in the mouth, tasting like an orange - chocolate torte, framed by wonderful black fruit, truffles (duh!), and maybe a touch of gravel for good measure. All this and yet it still exhibited a food friendly, dry persona, Given amarone’s reputation, I expected a little heat, of which I could detect none, and actually the alcohol seemed to provide a sense of structure to the totally packed finish. Some have commented that the 97 is a bit closed at the present. No worries here, as this beauty is open for biz & perfect match with my veal shank! |
