2012 32 Winds Chardonnay Spinnaker

Anderson Valley more

3/14/2017 - tomherer Likes this wine: 92 points

This is terrific and seems to be in a peak window. Both light and creamy with roasted pear, green apple, a little salted butter, and a nice acidic bite towards the end that doesn't clip the finish. Not sure if the winery is still producing since their site lists the current Pinot vintage as 11/12, but will seek out more of their wines regardless.

Agree with mv2007 about the strawberry/rhubarb profile. The strawberry in particular is pure and generous without being jammy and overbearing. Silky texture overall with a grippy and toasty finish. Held its own against a '15 Wren Hop Night Children, which is no mean feat. This wine, not surprisingly, is more evolved and accessible than the WH at this point, and actually a damn good value at <= $45. I'd say at least three great years left in it, possibly quite longer given the screwtop enclosure.

Opened this on the heels of an '09 AP Garys' purchased from the same source. Both had an obvious spritz to them. This vintage's blew off more quickly, but it was still really distracting. The underlying juice was good to drink, but the overall wine was essentially flawed. No clue what to chalk it up to, but definitely wouldn't purchase either vintage again based on this pattern.

Opened too early -- not that the last half dozen TNs didn't provide fair warning. This is actually still quite raw and rough for what you'd expect. Definitely some burning heat, which combined with the stiff, young tannis makes for a pretty abrasive drink.

Detected the now-expected APV spritz right off the twist, but it didn't hang on more than a minute or two. What's left is layered and concentrated raspberry, caramel, plum, cinnamon, cayenne, and mineral. Heavy-bodied for pinot, with a great finish.

Maybe this relaxes in a few years, and becomes silky and inviting as the tannins resolve. That'd be 91-92. Realistically tho, the etoh gets more obtrusive over time, and this bottle never becomes outstanding. This is good, but just doesn't do the vineyard or price tag justice. The last APV in my cellar, and after the disappointing run I've had w/them lately, it'll likely stay that way.

Update on day two -- came around nicely. Tannins are mostly resolved which leaves a lot of smooth fruit. Lost some of its nuance tho, and the heat is still protruding. Better, but still not a repurchase.

Really loving this. Captivating nose of grass, fresh orange, and vanilla pudding. Same flavors with some meyer lemon as well. Beautiful balance, modest complexity, and slightly raw on the finish. WE 95 is kind of crazy talk, but I take their point in that this a standout new world Viognier, especially for the price.

First of two bottles, and first experience with an Alban. If this is towards their entry level, well, damn.

Blind, Could be confused for a flashier old-world Syrah, a la Chapoutier. Blackberry, cardamom, graphite, plum, braised celery, black olive. Not a blockbuster, but held our keen interest for four or five hours. Happy with it for the price (paid ~$50 iirc). Will probably open the remaining bottle within the next year or so, as there are more than enough secondary notes here already. That said, it's a lovely, sturdy Syrah that should hold its peak for at least the next three-five years, so no rush either.

12/15/2013 - tomherer Likes this wine: 94 points

This might be wine of the year for me (altho the year isn't quite over and the best bottles always come out at end of December..). Profound quality. $35 and not in terribly short supply. Really special stuff. I'm in wolfonthehill's camp on this one; don't understand the overall ho-hum CT reception otherwise.

Very pale edges but more concentrated towards the middle. Inviting aromas of forest floor, flowers, and strawberries. Gorgeous balanced flavors of cranberry, cherry, mocha, brown sugar, tea, cola, and autumn leaves. Impeccably balanced and crazy complex. Soft texture with fine tannins and a really pretty lingering finish. Pinot gets better than this -- think four figure Burg, Marcassin, etc. -- but not from this place at this price. Awesome.

10/1/2015 - tomherer Likes this wine: 87 points

Love the branding, packaging, and size format. Can see buying a lot more to nestle between the craft beer cans at the next party. As Martin said, portable, $7, 500ml, freaking kidding me?

Out of the ice bucket, the nose is forward but the palate is completely shut down. Warmed up a little to 48-50 degrees, the palate is much more forward, but giving off a little sugar and flab. I bet there's a sweet spot in the middle, but looking for it takes a lot of the fun out of a basically fun wine, amiright?

That said, it really is a complete and solid rose. Right now, tasting the orange peel Martin noted, macerated strawberries, watermelon with rind, and a faint exit of key lime. I'm looking for the minerality you want in a great pink, but it ain't there. Finish is respectable, nose is attractive...on balance, this is a great discovery to be tried if you can find it.

Never disappoints. Sure, it's fruit-driven, but it's 100% Grenache, right? There's enough structure and complexity to the red berry flavors to make it interesting. Still a bit grippy; will probably hold up nicely for a few years.

3/21/2018 - tomherer Likes this wine: 96 points

Not seeing a lot of rave reviews on this wine recently, but I'm finding it to be freakishly good. Maybe because I haven't had this style of wine in many years and because the price is so low that it's blowing away my expectations?

The wine pours thicker than any I've ever had. Literally almost a maple syrup consistency. It's also outrageously sweet. That's OK though, because just the tiniest sip provides waves of flavor for at least two minutes.

Sea salt, burnt caramel, milk chocolate, roasted nuts, cherry cordial, maple syrup, orange rind, lemon juice, wintergreen. Sticks to the tongue and floats above it at the same time. The complexity, balance, quality, and price here are all just insane. 96+ -- can't imagine if this had a little more acidic lift, would probably be scraping 100.

It's..fine. Has nothing working against it, nor anything working for it. Nose is of fruit cocktail in syrup, complete with the plastic cup. Tastes of green grape, green apple, celery, and oak. Totally competent chard, but it's desperately boring. Again, it's not a bad wine exactly, but I can't think of a situation where it'd truly be enjoyed. Avoid.

Similar notes to 9/17 -- this misses a beat compared to last time, but it's still an extraordinary bubbly. The same components are there, they're just not quite as in focus this time around. Instead, the wine has a creamier taste and feel that comes across a bit more luxurious. Not a bad tradeoff. Iirc Scott is down to his last case or two in the tasting room, but is also nearly ready to release the 2013 vintage, which I can't wait to try.

Stumbled on this at Cellars of Sonoma in Healdsburg -- it's a collective tasting room that represents a handful of small wineries. The most notorious one is Heidi Barrett's La Sirena, but every one of them had at least one outstanding offering on the list. Highly recommend a visit.

Anyway, this wine is part of the tasting room owner's side project -- tiny tiny production, he only made a couple dozen cases of it iirc. It's a really special wine, and not just because of the scarcity. It's delicate and subtle, but the purity is outstanding. Perfectly-delineated strawberry, cardamom, rose petal, and white pepper. Honey graham cracker rounds out the finish, which hangs weightlessly for half a minute. Ultrafine, persistent bead. One of the best sparkling wines I've ever had -- hats off.

Interesting that opinions on this are all over the map. I only got one bottle and happy that my experience is on the better end of the spectrum. Agree with S&C -- wish I'd backed up the truck on this one. Also agree with another taster calling out butterscotch -- getting it on both nose and palate.

Also getting tart blackberry, vanilla, olive, and a faint red fruit backdrop (strawberry!?). Had some nice smoked meat on the pop, but that's dissipated by the second glass. Smooth, long, and a silly bargain.

2010 Anthill Farms Pinot Noir Comptche Ridge Vineyard

10/27/2015 - tomherer wrote: 91 points

Notes from night two. Was tart to begin with, but is close to shrill now. Don't get me wrong, it's lovely, but the starting fruit:acid ratio is such that I don't necessarily think age and/or air will do this much good.

Nose is a little reticent, but if you get right amongst it, it finally offers up soft strawberry, clove, and cinnamon. The flavors are along the same lines, with crisp cranberry, earth, and green pepper joining the party.

Texture is pure silk, and the finish is long and delicate. Extremely austere for CA, and not my normal cup of tea, but the high quality is obvious regardless of preference. A Burgundy lover's pinot from top to bottom.

3/21/2018 - tomherer Likes this wine: 91 points

Opened this too soon, but it's still immensely pleasurable, especially after an hour or two of air. This wine is all about red fruit, with cranberry, apples, and barely-ripe raspberry that almost seem to hover in mid-air. Some orange marmalade too. It's crisp, airy, long, and delicious. Really, really delicious. The community avg of 96 is just goofy though -- for me, 96 denotes a world-class wine, nearing the best of the best. This wine isn't close -- for one, it's too simple, and much worse, it's hot. The 15.1% gives off a nice sear, which on its own disqualifies any Pinot from being top-tier. And, makes $70 a hell of a stretch. 91 as-is, maybe 93-94 without the heat.

9oz pour at Central Market Petaluma. $18; damn fair. Solid purple core with a clear, wide meniscus. Nose of raspberry, cola, wet earth, and purple flowers knocks you off the bar stool. Flavors follow, joined by black cherry and a refreshing root-y bitterness from the cola. Best BTG Pinot I've had by far. No clue what this retails for, but would easily hold its own amongst its $80-100 (and less-scarce) brethren.

Lucky enough to have found a few different Ashan chards over the past couple of months. Theirs is the only all-Chardonnay brand on my radar, and their focus appears to be paying off, as the QPRs here are terrific.

This bottling is all about balance -- lemon, apple, pear, hazelnut, piecrust, vanilla ice cream. Finish reverberates tirelessly, and on all ends of the spectrum. 92 with upside. Delicious, and good value here at $40.

I've been looking for a bottle of Ashan since I found some at the Gorman tasting room, but it was allocated for members and not for sale. The heart wants what it can not have!

Superb balance, toasty oak, cantaloupe, green apple, golden raisin, poached pear, vanilla ice cream. Silky long finish. A stunner. Was worth tracking this down for sure.
