Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux Red Bordeaux Blend more

3/11/2021 - Julian Marshall wrote: NR

On opening, the first sniff was really surprising - no oak, no chocolate, no deep, rich aromas, on the contrary, a wonderfully fresh smell of spring flowers, followed by sweet cherry, violets and a hint of plum. The first sip was just as disconcerting - very fresh and fruity, like a Chinon, blueberry, blackcurrant and cherry, not at all cloying, but then it morphed into something else - cough mixture, with a very hot after-taste which slides down the back of the throat. Going back for more, the attack tasted slightly weak compared to the hot finish, giving the impression of something unbalanced. Not bad, but I've had better Côtes de Castillon for a lot less.

All in all, not the disaster I feared but nothing special either, especially at the price. The best thing about this was the bouquet.

I forgot about this bottle but it was still going strong. The cloying fruit I noticed the last time, back in 2014, has settled down and the elegance I was looking for has taken over. Classic tastes of blackberries and blackcurrants with a little creamy patch mid-palate and a decent finish. It has lost a little sparkle so probably best to drink it in the next couple of years. One of the rare 2005s not to suffer from excessive tannins.

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more

The first thing I noticed was the label, front and back. On the front, the alchohol stated is a remarkably precise 13,2°. On the back, a very helpful label giving the cépage percentages (53,5% C.S., 45% Merlot and 1,5% Cab Franc) and a sommelier's tasting notes, together with the assertion that
"We reject fashion, the standardisation of taste, the excessive use of new wood...We take on a new challenge with each vintage, because consumer confidence can never be taken for granted"
Well that sounded promising!

Good strong colour, a ripe, fleshy and fruity nose with strong blackcurrant aromas and a touch of raspberry. Very fruity attack, with oozing blackcurrants at first, then a strong wave of mushy blueberry, backed up with fresh raspberry and elderberry, before a refreshing wave of minerality that keeps the whole thing palatable. The finish combines the different tastes and lingers pleasantly in the mouth.
There are tannins, but these are not at all obtrusive and there isn't a trace of oak.
It is certainly original, like a cross between an un-oaked modern Right Bank wine and a fruitier Cru Bourgeois. Very youthful, I would have mistaken it blind for a 2009.
The fruit is really impressive, but at the moment slightly cloying - I enjoyed tasting it more than I enjoyed drinking it. This will change in three or four years' time when the minerality will emerge fully and when the fruit enters its secondary phase.
It isn't really my sort of wine, I prefer a bit more finesse and grip, but it is certainly a hedonistic crowd pleaser, mercifully free from wood pollution.
At 14€ this is a middle to upper range CB but still represents very good value.
Not quite as good as Caronne, better than Paloumey.

Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux Red Bordeaux Blend more

3/29/2012 - Julian Marshall wrote: NR

Definitely an acquired taste, this has regulation gobs of fruit, with strong notes of strawberry and blackberry, but they veer off into a sherbet taste which is rather unsettling. Luckily there's no overpowering oak, but this tastes like it's been passed through a tea strainer, it's too concentrated, very high-pitched, high alcohol and glycerine without the body to provide a base and the acidity to balance it out. Great elegance, but not for all palates.

Same as my last one, not really my sort of wine. Technically fine, not over-oaked, but the pitch of the taste is towards the top of the palate, without a solid base to follow it. A wine that talks to the top of the mouth rather than the throat. One glass is fine, but after that it just tastes a bit thin and vapid to me.

As before, a high pitched, high octane wine, which aims at the front and top of the palate. Not altogether unpleasant but not my type of wine. Notes of kirsch and raspberry liqueur on both nose and palate, with a well-polished finish. Others will enjoy this a lot more, hence the score.

2005 Allegrini Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

Corvina Blend, Corvina more

12/21/2016 - Julian Marshall Does not like this wine: 88 points

A caveat - this was my first taste of an Amarone and I'm normally a fan of Bordeaux, i.e. drier, more classical wines. I was quite impressed by the complexity of the bouquet, full of rich aromas of plum, dark cherry and spices. The taste was certainly interesting, full of the same, but with strong notes of figs and raisins, and it dominated without any difficulty the Italian food it accompanied, but the overall impression was rather sickly and cloying, so on its own the wine became quickly OTT. My score doesn't reflect my own appreciation but I'm sure others will like this more. I don't think it merits more because after a couple of hours it did rather fall away into a slightly oxidized mess.

Same again, the perfect midweek wine, not too tannic with good darkish fruit and persistence at an excellent price.

Probably a bad patch, but this was good without being anything special. The red berried fruit was slightly marred by brett and there was a lack of depth which I hadn't expected. Not the best YA I've had.

Much better than the last one, with ripe red berries and decent length, very enjoyable with a summer magret, but with the exception so far of the 2017, I don’t find La Petite Cave to be as impressive as their other top cuvées.

Dark cherry and spice aromas, with a little farmyard niff and tobacco, then a bright, chirpy mouthful of dark cherry and blackcurrant, quite spicy but also with a hefty dollop of brett. Very silky and elegant, already drinking well but plenty of improvement in perspective. Overall very enjoyable, a step up from the Quartiers cuvée but not at the same level as Le Grand Clos or Les Malgagnes.

After two days in the cellar this improved a lot: the Brett disappeared leaving a much more harmonious wine, beautifully balanced with very clear, fresh fruit and a wonderful velvety touch. Definitely one to look out for with a long future.

Good, but closer to adequate than outstanding. Notes of tobacco and forest fruit, a hint of bell pepper, a mouthful of the same, not completely ripe and slightly brown at the edges, but a confident if restrained finish. Enjoyable but not memorable.

Slightly bretty at first but then a rich, deep nose of forest fruits and leather, then a thick mouthful of blackberry and blackcurrant, before a long finish of raspberry and blackcurrant. Slightly bitter mid-palate, otherwise excellent. What I like is the richness of the raspberry combined with a certain restraint, which stops it from being overblown.

Very oaky at first on the nose, but that blew away after an hour. Quite well-structured, with intense notes of redcurrant and cranberry, tongue tingling and moreish. Very enjoyable, it's probably at peak but with plenty of future ahead.

Possibly better than the last one, brambly fruit with some very strong notes of raspberry. Absolutely delicious - soft, quite broad and full-bodied, with great persistency. All this from a "weak" vintage.

7/14/2021 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 92 points

Sadly my last bottle for now, this has been consistently excellent over the last three years and has a long life ahead.

Brambly fruit on the nose, with herbs and leather, then a precise, not too rich mouthful of raspberry, cranberry and blackcurrant, which deepens into a darker phase before a long, crisp finish.

To be really outstanding it would need a little more ripeness to the fruit - it is a little lean - but this does not detract from the overall quality. Just as good as the top Chinon producers for a lot less.

The nose is very arresting - full of fresh violet, with hints of blackcurrant. The attack is just as fresh, with violet and sour cherry, before a wave of blackcurrant, the blackberry only coming in the long, convincing finish.
Still very young but very attractive indeed.
What is interesting is that they produced a Pavillon in 2010, which could detract from the quality of the Grand Clos - not in this case.

Much more mature than the last bottle tried in June 2021, but still vibrant: very red fruit-orientated now, with notes of red cherry, redcurrant and strawberry on both nose and palate, a touch of sweetness but in a beguiling rather than a syrupy way. Quite fine and elegant but I would have preferred a little more freshness and a little more stuffing in the middle section. Not quite as satisfying as the GC in 08, but probably the best Amirault in 2010.

Nearly but not quite as good as the Grand Clos 08, although an excellent wine and better value. This has good fruit, mainly red berries, good concentration and good length, with a gentle spiciness to the fruit along with a slightly smoky finish. Very enjoyable and good for several more years.

Consistently good, with silky red fruit and polished tannins - traditional but made with modern techniques. Several years to go but already delicious. What I like about it is the chalky finish, much more Chinon than Bourgueil.

2017 Yannick Amirault Bourgueil Pavillon du Grand Clos

Cabernet Franc more

5/24/2022 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 95 points

A much more expansive nose than the Petite Cave, with really deep, powerful notes of blackcurrant and dark raspberry, together with hints of peonies and herbs. In the mouth, an altogether different wine, much more serious (with and without ""!) and a lot more volume than the Petite Cave. No trace of brett, but a lingering taste of oak on the finish. For now, quite primary of course, with waves of blackcurrant, dark cherry and dark raspberry, but also hints of wild strawberry which I imagine will grow as the wine ages. One of the more impressive wines I've tasted from Y.A., this needs at least five years and probably ten. Up there with the best Loire reds, this could turn into a really outstanding wine.
Coming back to this two days later, it is monolithic but very impressive - now full of violet, crushed strawberries and spicy blackberry, but less oak and a little more supple. Quite hard work for now but it just needs time - like looking at a mountain peak which you know you can climb in the future.
Definitely recommended.
