Nose a bit reticent at first but soon opens up to reveal dark, smoky fruit, notes of old leather and sea salt and just a touch of tobacco. Medium bodied on the palate, dark leathery fruit on initial entry, refined tannins - this has softened nicely, middleweight with lots of salinity coming through on the back of the mid-palate, fresh acids, good length finish with a touch of grip right on the tail end. Lovely, and now drinking well.

Took to a Spanish wine lunch. There were 2 other 2005's there, a Pintia and a Flor de Pingus, both of which opened up more than the LdH, though the FdP was tight for a while. A good but muted showing, but since it was my bottle half of it went home and was retasted about 8 hours later, at which point it it would have been the WOTD of 6 reds. Balanced, suave, elegant. So, a decant is advisable at present. (91 @ lunch, 93-94 late night)

Vanilla bean crème, unripe cherry, dill, earth/barnyard notes, herbal notes. Old school rioja, and dare I say this can go many years or needed more air. I probably underestimated the amount of air (2hrs) this could take.

Rioja aficionados will appreciate it for what it is…others, maybe not so much.

Wine #25 and my notes at this point are a little hard to read. But I *think* we found all the charms of aging red LdH here with ample dark red fruits, strawberry compote and spice. It kind of swung in and out of being fleshy and reserved. Where LdH can have a lot of variation, this was an excellent bottle.

Vicki's. Straight from the bottle, fruit showing a lot more black than red right now with dusty earth and some baked tones. Not flawed, just not prepared to enter this world yet so it didn't come across with either Rioja or LdH typicity. Needs rest.

Served at about 55F. Minerally and dry with rose petal fruit, a tiny bit of orange rind and the light sherryish note typical of so many LdHs--more so than a stunning 2008 opened about two years ago. A good bottle, but not a great one.

Tasted blind in a flight of six Iberian wines.
Dusty with some red and dark fruit on the nose. Modest. Fresh acidity.
Feels like it’s in between phases. I would wait 5-10 years for this one because right now it’s a bit disappointing. Easy to pick as a Rioja.

Concur on the cherry, old wood and leather. Rather dry. Still drinking well, but likely on the backside of its peak. Would drink by end of next year for those still with bottles. Properly cellared.

65% Tempranillo, 25% Garnacha, 10% Mazuelo and Graciano. Average 40-year-old vines. 90,000 bottles made. At least 3 years in used American oak and 3 years in bottle before release. Moderately expressive nose of bright red fruit and balsamic, tobacco, mild oak notes. The palate is more expressive with medium-light bodied and tangy red fruit, a touch of vanilla and no hard edges. Easy to drink. Great with food. Relatively low alcohol at 13.5%. This reminds me more of Chianti than most modern Rioja today. Not yet on tertiary notes, so still has time to age.

Natural cork. Ruby in the glass with a garnet rim. For a lower ABV wine it has quite a bit of alcohol on the nose, floral, and light raisin notes. Medium light body, certainly on the more delicate side of reds, a lot of acidity leading to some tart cherry flavour, tannins are still noticable.

Drak med Mussi.
Flot farve. Alder. Duft efter kort tid. Sveske på fornuftig baggrundsmåde. Mørke bær. Dufter lidt Gevrey med alder.
Smager som duft. Stadig god syre. God balance. Tannin på læberne. Køb gerne mere.

Raveneau MdT and Chapelot (Chicago, IL): I love these old LdH whites so much, even though they are admittedly weird and honestly a touch hard to pair. But there's something about that waxy complexity here that I really dig. It's saline in the way a sherry can be, but without all the alcohol. Salty and funky with a furry type of quality, this actually reminds a little of Allemand in the way that the feral notes are also restrained and slightly domesticated. But just a little bit.
