Enjoyable wine for the price, good citrus and melon notes. Not hugely complex or refined but for 25 euro, a good white burg for a weeknight.

Holding up well and has not changed that much over the last 5 years. Still lime and lemon in a fresh, mineral style. Maybe just a tad broader with a bit more wax and butter, but overall the citrus and the minerals still dominates both nose and palate. But I don't get the bitter grapefruit anymore, or at least a lot less of it. That is actually an improvement.

Pale colour, a lovely nose that makes a promise that the palate almost keeps. Gentle pear / lemon water taste, just enough grip and acidity to keep it interesting. Jolly decent stuff.

Chardonnay from 30 to 80 years old vines, fermented with indigenous yeasts, malolactic done, aged 17 months in tanks and barrels, no fining, 2050 bottles produced, 14% vol.

PnP. Still very youthful, on the nose ripe orchard fruit with a touch of yeasty notes, with more air it gets fresher and fresher and a suggestion of grapefruit, on the palate good freshness and concentration but not at all heavy, ends long.

Good representative of a Pouilly-Fuissé from Chaintré, ripe and concentrated but with the structure that makes it an ideal wine at the big dish, give it enough air and do not serve it too cold. In an early drinking phase, will peak in 3 to 6 years.

Medium gold colour. Medium and developing nose with ripe yellow apples, ripe lemon, leather, charred wood, mushrooms, butter, smoke, wet leaves and toast. Medium taste of ripe yellow apples, grilled lemon, leather, mushrooms, charred wood, butter, toast and wet leaves. Long and dry finish. High acidity. Medium body. A very good Mâcon-Villages with a very earthy touch. Needed an hour of air to open. Drink now. Goes well with cheeses, fish, mushrooms or shellfish.

Red berries, turning to blueberry compote with air, accompanied by violet and peony. Medium+ acidity, ten months spent in used oak reflected in ample, soft tannins. Lovely palate informed by the nose, rolling over in typical Fleurie style to white mineral on the finish. Excellent, and interesting life ahead.

Very consistent and absolutely at peak. A very cote d’Or-style Chardonnay — rich and very slight hints of oak — but with a distinct honeysuckle character. Very minerally. Balanced. Crowd pleaser. Don’t think this will improve further but no signs of fading either.

Nice elegant nose with citrus, flowers and also a touch of perfume. Lemon on the palate thats really powerfull and then the pretty long finish kicks in, thats very dry and also too dry for me and makes the wine feel unbalanced. Still theres quality here, just not all the way around. Maybe it needs food.

NOSE: medium+ expressiveness; canned pineapple slices; a touch natty; papaya; light note of plain Cheerios.

BODY: medium rich pale yellow color; medium to medium-full bodied.

TASTE: medium+ to high acidity; a touch natty; salty finish; hint of nutmeg; light pineapple; not oaky; alc. well-hidden (13%); Fuji apple on the finish; tropical; this would rate much higher without the natty aspects (I'd probably be in the low-level excellent range (90 - 91)). Last glass on Day 3 and it's no longer coming across as natty. I'm confused. I guess give it lots of air if drinking now, or put them to the back of the cellar. Rating based on Day 1.

An exquisitely dry wine with “du gras” as the French say; given the dry finish, this rich layer is perceived as a palette of paradoxically rich aromas— Butter and hazelnut, graham cracker, then fresh tarragon and salty crushed seashells. “Du gras”, truly. This texture and breadth lends it authority in food pairings. Case in point; I followed a risky intuition to its logical end, and was pleasantly rewarded. I paired this Chardonnay with Cantonese salt and pepper fish that was rife with both garlic and ginger, it still worked well. Violating one of the most primordial of pairing rules: garlic and white Burgundy typically are at brutal odds w each other. Not so, here… thanks to the minerality, there’s just something deeply satisfying, that really reminds you of comfort food with this wine.

2021 Bret Brothers Pouilly-Fuissé En Carementrant

Chardonnay more

4/10/2023 - David Strange Likes this wine: NR

Climat En Carementrant 2021 has a light, flowery nose with plenty of fresh apple and lemon fruit. It is energetic and vibrant, very Pouilly-Fuissé in character.

However, if you sniff a bit more carefully, you can find deeper levels of complexity and style that mark this out as quite a special, superior wine. Indeed, if you noticed these characteristics on your first sniff I think you could be excused for thinking this was an elegant Côte-de-Beaune white.

It does not have the weight to be from there, in truth, it is highly refined and dances up your nostrils as the most lithe of pole-dancers would pull themselves up.

There is butter here as well, not so much a slathering but more a smattering. This is slightly surprising to find in a Maconnais wine, but this wine is a bit of a mashup.

You see, there is a great tension on the nose between ripe and bold flavours and elegant, prettier aromas.

Imagine, if you will, me wearing Y-fronts. Obviously, they are packed full of masculine pleasure-potential, but the taut elastic of the Y-fronts keeps everything held in place with very little bulging or sagging.

The Climat En Carementrant 2021 is only 12.5%, so that explains some of the taut, precise characteristics. Moreover, as you will have seen from the side label, this Climat is entirely planted on limestone. This will give energy and focus to the wine.

The palate is a wondrous kaleidoscope of complex, intertwined flavours. The Climat En Carementrant 2021 just tastes of so many different things.

The Climat En Carementrant 2021 has fresh flowers, grassiness, lovely ripe lemon, fresh Granny Smith apple and a hint of grapefruit zesty fruit, a profound stoniness – freshly chipped limestone, great – although far from excessive – acidity that keeps the whole thing vivacious and infused with life and drive, a hint of butter, some waxiness. You see there is a lot going on!

All of these flavours are very prominent and deep, but the palate is never weighty or heavy. That tension between ripe, abundant flavours and minimalist restraint that was present on the nose of the Climat En Carementrant 2021 is in action bigly* on the palate. My Y-fronts elastic has a lot to hold in, but it looks perfectly presentable.

The finish is enormously long, with a huge swirl of those complex flavours leaving glisks of deliciousness on the palate for a long time after being swallowed. It is really restrained but, my, what a lot is going on here.

To summarise this is a brilliant small-scale beauty that toys with ideas of scale which are all held in place by the taut, minimalist frame of the wine. I have a second bottle, and it will undoubtedly mature, but this is so enjoyable I think I will open my next bottle in the near future.
