Had this with a '98 Lafite, 08 Shafer Relentless, and '94 Dow. Great bottle and nice floral nose, however, the Group unanimously picked the '98 Lafite. I'd be happy drinking this bottle any day of the week. Glad I still have 3 bottles remaining.

Had this with a '98 L'Eglise Clinet, 08 Shafer Relentless, and '94 Dow. Amazing bottle that as it began to warm and open up showed the classic cedar and violet nose. This just might be the second best bottle of wine I've had to date. Still have one more!

Consumed against '05 Ovid. Seemed a little muted on the nose compared to the Ovid, however, the taste was Bordeauxesque! Winner over the Ovid.

Consumed against '05 Cos d'Estournel. Great nose, however, could definitely detect the heat and alcohol compared to the Cos. Overall, the group preferred the Cos.

Had this along with an '08 Cos d'Estournel. Both were slow oxed for a little over two hours and drunk over three hours. The Shafer had a great nose at first but noticeable heat on the back palate. Towards the end do the evening and wine, the Cos pulled away with the typical Bordeaux nose and soft, silky finish. A couple of my other buddies agreed the Cos started out slow but pulled away in the end.

I absolutely love this and now understand the greatness of the Pomerol region. The floral and espresso with hints of tobacco make this wine delicious. This is now one of my top 5 favorite producers!

I was surprised at how light and smooth drinking this wine was to be only 4 years old. My buddy, who likes Napa Cabs, mentioned he wondered how much he would like this in 10 years thinking there might not be enough fruit for his palate. I really liked this and would like to put it up to some other Napa Cabs and Bordeaux too.

1997 Opus One

Napa Valley Red Bordeaux Blend more

7/16/2011 - bhalljr wrote: 90 points

We had a few friends join my wife and me for dinner last night at Maggianos. I brought 5 bottles - '97 Opus, '97 Latour, '86 Caymus Cuvee, '06Agharta Exhibit B, and '05 Guiraud.

I had my bartender buddy pop and decant the Opus, Latour, and Agharta. I took a sample of both the Latour and Opus to the table to share with the others the difference in Cali vs France. I didn't tell them which glass was which wine. The results were amazing. 5 of the 6 all chose the Latour. My wife initially thought Latour but changed her mind at the last minute to the Opus. I couldn't believe that all the others chose the Latour.

I went and pour another helping of both and was amazed how much the Latour had opened. It was so much smoother and the nose was so much more expressive compared to the Opus. What's funny is that '97 was considered a lackluster vintage for France while supposedly a great one for Napa.

As for the others, I didn't drink the Agharta and did the Caymus, which wasn't bad bud fading.

We had a great time with great friends and great food!

Nice nose...somewhat Bordeaux-like with tobacco and earth smells. The wine was drying out on the back palate but still fine to drink. Had this along with a '97 Marcassin, '75 Latour, and '99 Hartwell at Seagars in Destin with wife and friends. The Latour was in a whole other world. It well out classed the competition and proved great bordeauxs can age well.

My first full tasting of the Hillside Select other than that from the winery. Amazing nose and reminded me of the '99 Hartwell I had a couple of weeks earlier yet so much more depth and complexity than the Hartwell. I definitely understand now the rave reviews and consistency associated with the Hillside Select. Definitely plan to stock up on this wine in the future!
