The brett is strong with this one. No stranger to brett yet am I. Much force and darkness there is lurking. Bottle variation it may be. Rate I will not.

Nose - earthy, olive, somewhat gamey, coming across Syrah like
Mouth - drinks delicious, dark fruits, fig, cocoa, still loads of tannins but good cushioning acidity. I suspect this is just now entering its drinking window, it’s criminal that I already blew through my stash. Drink or hold

not so sure about this wine. Light in color and structure. Drinks like a pinot but short finish. This may have been past its prime.

„One Wine - Three Vintages“-Blind Tasting. Flight 5: Mastroberardino Taurasi Radici Riserva. We tasted 1997, 1999 and 2006. This flight probably was the most difficult to figure out blind as it showcased the potentially least familiar grape variety and region, but by ruling out Nebbiolo, Tannat and Sagrantino we got there.

The two things all three wines had in common were the good tannin/acidity structure and the remarkable length on the palate. The 1997 was my favourite wine of the flight. It was rather limited on the nose, but was the most balanced wine of the three, with tea and tobacco notes, medium-plus tannin, high acidity and tremendous length. The 1999 showed gamy notes on the nose and sweet fruit on the palate, with medium-plus tannin and acidity and very good length. It was the least enjoyable and my least favourite wine of the flight. The 2006 showed a lot of restrained power. It was the darkest wine of the bunch and almost sweet on the palate, with lots of oak, medium-plus tannin and acidity and very good length. It clearly needed more time in the cellar. All three wines screamed for food.

Do you think it will be anything more than acidic watery substance by then?

I must admit to enjoying the elderly wines as they mature and develop "side-aromas" and scars that inevtably come with age and a life worth while. Even if geriatric wines can be weak, they are often very interesting.
As the British say: the proof of the pudding is in the pudding. So, lets find out :-)

I wanted to like this wine. I really love Italian wines and have had some great Taurasi wines in the past. Brown brick color, tasted upon opening and nothing on the nose and not much on the palate but figured it would open up by dinner. Well decanted about 1/3 and that pour or the pour from the bottle was no better after air time of at least an hour. Pruny tasting with ash flavor and no better with food. Not corked but just over the hill. Rare that a bottle is not emptied with my wife on a Saturday night and she did not like it from her first glass.
Tasted again 2nd night and this must be oxidized so removed low score and checked the flawed box.

A rustic wine.
An old geezer who keeps telling obsenely scabrous stories that children should never hear, that make ladies' ears wither and priests cross themselves.

Early drinking window. We dbldecanted for five hrs.
Wife was not so happy with this btl.

Boys out fine dining and fine drinking (Restaurant Tani in Gaienmae (Tokyo)): An absolute bonker!
Super concentrated (no sediment), mega young, not at all integrated with raw wood attacking your senses like a a hairy medieval scotsman with a club...

But the grace within is like a well brought up princess. Amazing and astonishing! Spicy, fruity, multi-layered and grande in a way that Aglianico rarely is. This is soooo refined you'd need a microscope to work your way around its intricate details. Apart from young and unintegrated, this is a fabulous wine of sorts.

Just relax, remain patient and watch it grow through the TN's of all the early drinkers.

This wine really deserves its credits. The cousins behind it are worthy of all the praise. Yay! What a feat! This is a must-visit. And a must buy.

Decanted at room temp for 2 hours. Beautiful balance, medium body and great flavors. Not particularly long aftertaste, but very satisfying. I could recognise the time it spent in my cellar and how it has mellowed this wine. I plan to drink the rest of these over the next 3-5 years, I am not sure they will last beyond that time.

A beautifully mature Aglianico with still some beautiful years of life ahead.

Eye of the beholder: Dark red with slightly mature brim.
Nose: Started out with a lot of unpleasant odours, but they luckily blew away. Dark fruits and unrefined older signage.
Palate: Beautifully concentrated, intense wine that stands firm like a boulder. Not overly refined, with a coarse structure and rough tannins. But, balance is impeccable and its presence is marvellous. There is a restraint on the composition, and a subtle level of maturity is upon us.

After three days, the final glass, under a cork in room temperature:
Nose unbearably oxidized. But on the palate are now beautiful aromas of milk chocolate, leather, tea-leaves, La Garrigue and soft, red fruits. Tannins are now more to the point, and the whole structure is still coarse.

Glorious maturity with at least five more years on the plateau.

Wife's choice at Italian Rest: Antichi Sappore (Tokyo)

Tasted this wine for the first time and did not share in the general excitement. The fruit is bright and long, bit of menthol, mineral. The overall taste has a vegetive hint of green peppers that reminded of a ripe cab franc -- something I didn't find very appealing. Will wait to retaste.

Most wines can be enjoyed almost always when young, but the ones that can age well achieve amazing heights that just are not there in the young padawans.
Very mature wines often develop fascinating "non-fruity, non-fresh" aromas that can be anything from foul to getting me going like nothing else. A great mature wine always beats a young great wine on my palate.

..but would I love to open one of these? Hell yeah! :-)

Decanted for 3 hours. Opaque purple color. Similar tasting note to the one of April 2013. The volcano/mineral/ash notes are literally jumping out of the glass. Tons of tobacco, cigar, coffee, cedar wood and plum. It's full bodied and very dense, with high tannin and high acidity providing tons of freshness. Great length. There is an amazing glass-coating viscosity. I am again super impressed by the wine's harmony, freshness and balance. This is world class wine! At this stage it's infanticide but what the heck?!

9/24/2013 4:58:00 PM - We've bought a few vintages of this for the long haul as it's a wine with a long life expectancy rating. Haven't had one yet, but must admit to being incredibly tempted :-)
...especially since vegetal CF-aromas wake up my inner poet (as do mature wines.)
Galloni's descriptions are not "consistent", so not someone to listen to more than anyone you like on CT. I find his notes often overly simplified or missing important points. But he does have had an incredible amount of wines tasted and I very often find myself agreeing to his scores.

An almost SQN-like nose - very intense aromas of licorice, red and black berry, menthol, earth, tobacco, chocolate, graphite. On the palate it's tart cherry, licorice, minerality, earthy. Full bodied, high acidity, high tannins (they build up over time), medium alcohol (14%). While this may certainly last 20 years, I don't think it's as far away from its sweet spot as some people do. The tannins are reasonably smooth already and it's already got some nice tertiary aromas. Wish I had a case so I could try a bottle every year to check out its development.
