2011 R. López de Heredia Rioja Rosado Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia

Grenache Blend, Grenache more

Serious, intense wine with deep, amber color. Opens up with a nose strawberries, sherry, nuts. Complex on the palate with marks of dried fruit, subtle oak, melon and citrus. The extended barrel aging shines through. Like drinking a chilled Rioja with just a bit more freshness than the red versions. Not your ordinary rosé, for sure, a wine that requires attention and food. This is a step up from the 2010 in terms of intensity and complexity.

Something else in terms of being a rosé wine. Both me and the wife loved it. Ripe strawberry, mushroom and nuts on the nose. Amazing acidity balanced with great fruit consentration. Again with strawberries. Integrated wood and subtile spice in the end. WOW. This was fun, and such a joy.

Beautiful and singular. Worth the (high) price of admission.

Fresh watermelons, wild strawberries, radishes, walnuts, hazelnuts. Cedar and a little bit of smoke from the oak. Medium + body, medium acid. Long, lingering finish.

Egenartet nese.

Won't score it with my yak of a palate. I didn't get the wine. My first LdH... sweet and sour watermelon, mushrooms, and some sherry. Nice purity, acidity and textures... but did not love or understand the flavors... more interesting than enjoyable. Thought perhaps the wine was flawed until I saw other CT notes here mentioning melon and mushrooms too....

A real mind blower - falls into its own category for me. Fortified wine aromas - like a sherry. Earthy, full bodied rosé. I will revisit this any chance I get.

Rose perfection. Mid weight with equal parts lemon curd, mint, Indian spice, wild strawberry, and sap. A hint of honey and a slight tannic bite. Wow. Interestingly, I didn't get much oxidative character on the first night when this was open but on night 3 the richness had faded and the notes of oxidation came forward.

Fabulously distinctive and perfectly in line with prior vintages going back to 2008. Trademark bright copper salmon. Waxy, deep, savory, presenting a complex cornucopia of mushroomy and pleasantly musky flavors. Extremely enjoyable, meted out over three nights. And a tiny taste remaining on the fourth was just as fabulous.

Felt a bit flabby for the first 30 min, with mostly the oak showing.

After that, the wine came alive. This backbone of verve and acidity suddenly appeared. The fruits (like watermelon) turned fresh. I originally had it cellar temp but then chilled a bit further and really liked the results.

Others have said watermelon and mushrooms, but for me a more exact description would be watermelon and PARMESAN. And a nice rich chalkiness on the back end.

Air was very kind to this. In future I would recommend uncorking and chilling in the fridge for 30 min before serving.

Kompleks gran reserva rosevin.
Mye av samme karakteristikken som hvitvinene fra samme Bodega. Vakker farge. Fat, røde bær, sitrus.
Høyt priset pga etterspørsel. Utvikler seg helt sikkert til det bedre om noen år.

Deep burnished pink/amber. Wildly interesting nose of fino sherry and black cherry. Full and glycerine, it feels like drinking many a low tannin red wine. Some oxidized elements, red fruit, melon, and a ton of soil with only average acidity. Fascinating wine that demands a lot of attention to get a handle on it, and even then, I found it very difficult to categorize and describe.

Garnacho (60%), Tempranillo (30%) and Viura (10%). Aged 4 years in American oak barrels, being hand racked twice a year. Fined with egg whites. 12.5 vol.

Decanted 8 hours before dinner into a narrow carafe and has still improved in the glass, enjoyed at approximately 14°C. On the nose very complex with mushrooms, raspberry, herbs and a hint of musk, on the palate starts a bit puzzling with cod-liver but this disappears after some minutes in the glass and it gets very approachable with good freshness, a bit of spiciness, dense and long.

Very unique and for sure not a crowed pleaser, needs patience. At this early stage I prefer the white and the red Tondonia but I can imagine that this will win with the years, I will try to wait and come back in 5+ years.

This was an exciting surprise! My first impression of the 2011 vintage and reminds me why I adore this wine so much. The nose displays oxidative notes that give it a sherry-like character. Lovely strawberry, watermelon, and porcini. From an intellectual standpoint, this was a really fun wine on its own but it becomes even more exciting with the introduction of food. Unlike, most rosado wines, there’s a good amount of structure with some pretty noticeable tannins. Definitely a rosado for heartier meals. Today, it was paired with a tarte flambée topped with octopus and salsa verde and while this modern spin on Flammekueche was delicious, I think this Rosado was a little overpowering for the pairing. A unique wine that is stylistically more like their Blanco…and unlike anything else you’ve likely ever tried. The closest thing I can think of would be Chateau Musar’s equally elusive Rosé…and even that one isn’t as left field as this.

First bottle of LdH Rosado for me. This is singular and expressive just like it’s Blanco siblings. In fact, if tasted blind I might not be able to differentiate the two. Compared to the ‘09 Blanco I drank alongside this, there was a touch of watermelon/very light red fruit and a little less acidity. Although I preferred the Blanco on this night, i would like to spend a little more time with this next time alongside some food to see if my thoughts change. An excellent wine regardless.

Tasted blind in week two of Blind.Faith’s tasting competition. I think this was the first and only time I’ve tasted something blind and just knew what it was (although I went for the 09 rather than 11). It’s a coppery coloured rose with quite an intense nose which is dominated by a savoury polished wood and celery leaf character. There are pithy citrus notes and red fruits in there underneath too. It’s so complex on the palate, medium bodied with plenty of acidity, a touch of spice, some tart citrus fruits, and almost bit creamy with a long, toasty, nutty finish. Just felt so LdH and absolutely lovely stuff.

In some ways similar to the Gravonia, but honestly I prefer the Gravonia ‘13 versus this one. More dominated by MC and a touch of gentle tannin on the finish.

Deep copper orange colour. Red fruit, red cherry, blood orange, peach, citrus, leather, tobacco, nuts, and light spice, with light tannin, high, lively acidity, and great persistence. Lightly saline. Lingers on the palate for a minute. Good concentration and complexity. Well-structured, with great acidity. Very food-friendly. Still consistent on day four. Amazing rosé!

Almond paste, yeast, spices, oxidative (in the sense where it could've been under flor/sour voile), cherries, seaweed, orange. Had this semiblind next to a '08 of the same cuvée and to my surprise, this (the '11) felt more mature and more oxidative, and the better wine no doubt.

A blend of Garnacha (60%), Tempranillo (30%) and Viura (10%). Aged for 4 years in oak barriques and for further 6 years in bottles before release. 12.5% alcohol and 6,7 g/l acidity. Total production 12,000 bottles. Decanted for a few hours before tasting the wine. Tasted blind.

Deep, fully translucent brick-orange color. Sweet, subtly oak-kissed nose with aromas of caramel indicative both of oak and age, some bruised apple tones, a little bit of ripe strawberry, light vanilla tones, a hint of fresh red cherry and a faint touch of browned butter. The wine is bright, fresh and very complex on the palate with a medium body and layered flavors of strawberries, some creamy oak tones, a little bit of ripe cranberry, light oaky nuances of browned butter and caramel, a hint of stony minerality and a sweeter touch of dried stone fruits. The overall feel is very harmonious, lively and precise, thanks to the high acidity and a subtle touch of tannic grip. The finish is long, juicy and complex with vibrant, slightly evolved flavors of strawberries and fresh apples, some browned butter, a little bit of caramel, light cherry tones, oaky hints of creaminess and savory wood spice and a touch of stony minerality.

A beautiful, fresh and complex Rioja Clarete that was instantly recognizable for a Tondonia Rosado. I already had a strong hunch which wine it was just upon seeing it in a decanter and only the first sniff confirmed my suspicion. I had not tasted vintages 2010 and 2011 yet, just 2008 and 2009, so guessing the vintage correctly was pretty difficult. The wine showed ripeness similar to the vintage 2009, so I went with that one - but it turned out to be 2011. All in all, another terrific vintage of this idiosyncratic wine that is drinking mighty well right now, but will continue to do so for years - perhaps even decades - to come. Not particularly affordable for a rosé at 50€, but delivers for the price.
