After a half hour or so, this comes together to reveal a really attractive food-friendly white wine. Nose of lime, tropical fruit, and a good mineral stroke. The palate is racy, with green apple, a bit of green mango, pineapple, and bracing minerality, along with a faint sesame or nutty note. Overall a sensational effort for the price, and the antithesis of what I expected from a Napa wine. Great value here...feel no hesitation in doubling down on future vintages. Could become a top-ranking Spring wine for me.

With a couple of hours of aeration, this is showing beautifully. It has aromas of herb, underbrush, cherry, and cacao. On the palate, it has great structure and a firm spine of fine tannins. Acidity is prominent, and it has a wonderful mocha back note. This is drinking very nicely right now, but could certainly hold off for years. A very fine example of the variety, which speaks to both the winemaker’s skill and the site.

Pretty astonishing turnaround since my last note, about 10 months ago. At that time, it was tight and austere, basically giving no pleasure. I was seriously ready to throw away or give away my remaining bottles.
Well, almost 6 years after vintage date, this one is finally starting to give some pleasure.
It now has some nice varietal aromatics. Initially bound up, a couple of hours of air does it a lot of good. A day of air does it even more good. At this point, more than 24 hours after first opening, it has downright delightful tobacco and leather aromas. Really nice blackberry, graphite, gun powder, herbal elements.
So, glad I didn’t give these away! Astonishing how a wine that seemed irretrievably flavorless can turn around like this.

At 5 years of age, this wine is unyielding, to say the least Decanted two hours. It has some vague Cabernet aromas. There is very little fruit, and the whole thing feels stripped-down and austere to the point of lacking pleasure.
I will revisit this tomorrow. As of now, I’m dejected, as I’m stuck with almost a case of a wine that is essentially undrinkable at this point.

Update, Day 2:
Zero flavor. None. This is going nowhere. I feel like I bought into the hysteria, too-good-to-be-true, and I'm now paying the price. I've yet to have a DN wine that I'd rate better than "pretty OK." Yes, some are good for the modest price, but this one is a total dud.

P&P. Actually benefits from some air time. A nice foundation of slightly dusty red fruits, very soft tannins. Some attractive varietal characteristics. The whole package is nicely in balance, with no component being overbearing. A very good buy, likely could improve with short-term age.

This isn’t an archetypal Cabernet, but it’s quite pleasurable. Nose of cranberry and dark cherry.
Low tannin. Smooth, rich dark fruit. Faint herbal finish. For the money, a great value.

Pretty enjoyable right out of the gate, and gains richness and nuance with air. Heady dark fruit and spice aromas, rich palate structure with bark blue fruits, meat, and leather, with power and sustain. I see no reason to wait per se, but will likely hold for years.

My first Match wine, and I am impressed for sure. Decanted for about an hour, this shows class, restraint, but still delivers plenty of flavor. Aromas of cocoa, blackberry, cedar, leather, with stylish fruit and pepper flavors that carry on a very long finish. Really enjoyed this wine. Can easily hold for a few years.

12/1/2018 - swillpower wrote: NR

s recommended, I gave it a decant (about 3 hrs).
The short tasting note: insane value. Classic Napa Cabernet, with much more up-front fruit than the vintage's spotty reputation would lead you to expect.
The decant is almost essential, as it is somewhat shy on first opening. Once it opens up, though, it is both generous and stylish. I personally really like some pyrazine notes in my Cabernet, and this one has a pleasantly moderate amount. Lots of plum and dark fruit, but in great balance with the acid and fine tannins. Finish is long and pleasing, a bit of chocolate and raspberry on the tail end. This will almost certainly age very well. I'm not at all happy to see a good winery cease operations, but I'm very happy to have gotten this wine for my collection.

This one needed an hour or two of air, as it began a bit coarse and backwards, but it evolves into a righteous medium-weight, serious Cabernet. Lots of leather, herbal dark fruit, and a long finish. Still plenty of tannic support, this can age indefinitely, but drinks well right now with the right food.

What an enigmatic wine...and utterly Scholium. After a 2-hour decant, this shows some oxidative/brown-sugar notes, leather, toasted spice, and still seems a bit closed. Savored throughout the evening, this didn't really show its stuff until six hours after decanting. By this time, it is beginning to unveil some of that classic herbal/green pepper, and some very dark berry notes. Much of the palate is wrapped up in almost indescribable deep, earthy, tarry components, which beg to be understood but defy description. I regret having only one bottle left...the next one will get much more aeration before even starting the journey.

I will go on-record as saying that I was misguided on this wine. A couple of years earlier, I had almost written this one off as disjointed and off-target. Forward to 2014, this needs a bit of air, but is exuberant, full of delightful, old-school goodies. Loads of herbs and graphite abound on the nose, while the palate brings rich earth, redwood, and dark cassis/berry action. QPR winner!

To all those who posted so lovingly on this wine on CT, I would like to thank you for your wry, sardonic irony...I got quite a laugh out of such lines as "Bold acid and structure" and "A lot less oak than a typical CA cab", but others reading your notes might not get the sarcasm. Seriously, this is one of those wines that makes me wonder if wine has a future in this country. If this is in fact cabernet sauvignon, it is virtually unidentifiable as such. A thick, all-encompassing blanket of oak abolishes all in its way. There is nothing more (and nothing less) to this wine. If you like this sort of thing, go for it, but you can go stand in the lumber aisle at Home Depot and inhale deeply for free.

Found a few of these from B-Day 2019. I had opened one shortly after getting it, and found it pleasant but a bit simple. This one is wide open now, and very pleasurable. It’s got some lively, briary notes, a bit of spice, an unexpected thin layer of tannic support. Faint green/stem notes on the surprisingly sustained finish. The overall impression is a lighter-bodied red that has some backbone. Definitely needs some food to show its best. Overall, I found it delightful, and a super value. Drink or hold.

I’ve purchased numerous wines from DN. While, admittedly, many of them are still on the young side, this one has emerged as a definite dark horse.
Caveat is that it needs a bit of air to really show. Don’t let its low price and less than prestigious variety make you think it’s a casual P&P.
Love the bright fruit aromas. The zesty cranberry acidity is what brings the wine into focus. It has an earthy undertone that balances that, as well.
A delightful, lithe wine that has proven to be very versatile. Just coming into its own now.
Fortunately, more is still available, so glad to be able to reload on a six-pack.

Tasted with Chris Brockway at 58 Degrees, this was the surprise hit if the lineup. The nose just leaps with strawberries and juicy blue fruit character. The wine goes down smooth as silk, fruity, balanced, a bit tangy, just makes you want to gulp it down...I imagine this lightly chilled on the porch on a Summer evening. Chris explained that he used predominantly carbonic maceration to tame the tannins of the old-vine fruit and add lift and high notes to this often unremarkable blending grape. Mission accomplished. He noted, of course, that, this technique is often used in Beaujolais Nouveau. Well, if more of it tasted like this, I'd drink a hell of a lot more Beaujolais.

At just 12.6%, it struggles to be fulfilling on all levels. Attractive and balanced green apple and lemon/lime notes are there. There’s a really nice mineral streak, and the finish is long and stylish. Nonetheless, it just doesn’t fulfill its potential. I can only imagine what could have been had it been harvested a little riper.

Definite highlight of a recent tasting with Bobby.
This is a truly remarkable Chardonnay from the Ordaz vineyard (which apparently is being replanted).
The oak is just right on this one, with some subtle toast overtones, but it’s all in the right place.
A beautiful overall clarity is the hallmark of this Chardonnay. Apple, lime blossom, some light biscuit savoriness. The balance is impeccable, and it would not be out of place in a lineup of better white Burgundies.

At $30, this is a reasonable buy. Has a nice fine mousse, some tasty biscuit and apple notes. It's a bit sweet for my preference, but could work with the right food, since the acid is decent. Enjoyable, though again sweeter than I personally prefer. If you like an off-dry style, it will work well.

For this price, you will not find a better California Chardonnay. Nice apple/pear notes, citrus, and some minerality that keeps it interesting, with a pleasing nutty element. There is no prominent oak present. I would not say that the style is lean per se, as it certainly has a nice fruit component, but it definitely is not big or overblown in any way. It’s a balanced wine that tastes like it can age. Buy up while you can.

This wine makes a singular first impression and exceeds expectations, especially if that expectation is predicated on archetypal Sonoma Chardonnay.
Pale golden color. Immediately gets one's attention with bracing Granny Smith apple, mirin, and pear aromas. A righteous acid spine supports apple, lime, and baking spice. On its own, this seems almost severe, but makes a magnificent partner with food (Indian in this case). At 4 years of age, it has plenty of miles ahead of it. Drink or hold with confidence.

This one over-delivers for sure. Needs a bit of air and cool room temp. Slightly roasty, oxidative, kumquat on the nose. The flavor screams lime marmalade to me, complete with that little bitter catch on the back palate. Minerally yet rounded, this could likely go a few more years. Good stuff.
