5/10/2011 - swillpower wrote: NRAfter a half hour or so, this comes together to reveal a really attractive food-friendly white wine. Nose of lime, tropical fruit, and a good mineral stroke. The palate is racy, with green apple, a bit of green mango, pineapple, and bracing minerality, along with a faint sesame or nutty note. Overall a sensational effort for the price, and the antithesis of what I expected from a Napa wine. Great value here...feel no hesitation in doubling down on future vintages. Could become a top-ranking Spring wine for me. |

3/19/2018 - swillpower wrote: NRWith a couple of hours of aeration, this is showing beautifully. It has aromas of herb, underbrush, cherry, and cacao. On the palate, it has great structure and a firm spine of fine tannins. Acidity is prominent, and it has a wonderful mocha back note. This is drinking very nicely right now, but could certainly hold off for years. A very fine example of the variety, which speaks to both the winemaker’s skill and the site. |

7/21/2022 - swillpower wrote: NRAt 5 years of age, this wine is unyielding, to say the least Decanted two hours. It has some vague Cabernet aromas. There is very little fruit, and the whole thing feels stripped-down and austere to the point of lacking pleasure. |

2017 Roots Run Deep Cabernet Sauvignon Educated Guess Napa Countymore |
8/23/2019 - swillpower Likes this wine: NRP&P. Actually benefits from some air time. A nice foundation of slightly dusty red fruits, very soft tannins. Some attractive varietal characteristics. The whole package is nicely in balance, with no component being overbearing. A very good buy, likely could improve with short-term age. |

Heady dark fruit and spice aromas, rich palate structure with bark blue fruits, meat, and leather, with power and sustain. I see no reason to wait per se, but will likely hold for years. |

11/6/2012 - swillpower wrote: NRMy first Match wine, and I am impressed for sure. Decanted for about an hour, this shows class, restraint, but still delivers plenty of flavor. Aromas of cocoa, blackberry, cedar, leather, with stylish fruit and pepper flavors that carry on a very long finish. Really enjoyed this wine. Can easily hold for a few years. |

11/22/2014 - swillpower wrote: NRThis one needed an hour or two of air, as it began a bit coarse and backwards, but it evolves into a righteous medium-weight, serious Cabernet. Lots of leather, herbal dark fruit, and a long finish. Still plenty of tannic support, this can age indefinitely, but drinks well right now with the right food. |

2006 Scholium Project Margit's Master BlendCalifornia Cabernet Sauvignon more |
4/1/2012 - swillpower wrote: NRWhat an enigmatic wine...and utterly Scholium. After a 2-hour decant, this shows some oxidative/brown-sugar notes, leather, toasted spice, and still seems a bit closed. Savored throughout the evening, this didn't really show its stuff until six hours after decanting. By this time, it is beginning to unveil some of that classic herbal/green pepper, and some very dark berry notes. Much of the palate is wrapped up in almost indescribable deep, earthy, tarry components, which beg to be understood but defy description. I regret having only one bottle left...the next one will get much more aeration before even starting the journey. |

1/10/2014 - swillpower wrote: NRI will go on-record as saying that I was misguided on this wine. A couple of years earlier, I had almost written this one off as disjointed and off-target. Forward to 2014, this needs a bit of air, but is exuberant, full of delightful, old-school goodies. Loads of herbs and graphite abound on the nose, while the palate brings rich earth, redwood, and dark cassis/berry action. QPR winner! |

4/28/2011 - swillpower wrote: flawedTo all those who posted so lovingly on this wine on CT, I would like to thank you for your wry, sardonic irony...I got quite a laugh out of such lines as "Bold acid and structure" and "A lot less oak than a typical CA cab", but others reading your notes might not get the sarcasm. Seriously, this is one of those wines that makes me wonder if wine has a future in this country. If this is in fact cabernet sauvignon, it is virtually unidentifiable as such. A thick, all-encompassing blanket of oak abolishes all in its way. There is nothing more (and nothing less) to this wine. If you like this sort of thing, go for it, but you can go stand in the lumber aisle at Home Depot and inhale deeply for free. |

10/10/2019 - swillpower wrote: NRFound a few of these from B-Day 2019. I had opened one shortly after getting it, and found it pleasant but a bit simple. This one is wide open now, and very pleasurable. It’s got some lively, briary notes, a bit of spice, an unexpected thin layer of tannic support. Faint green/stem notes on the surprisingly sustained finish. The overall impression is a lighter-bodied red that has some backbone. Definitely needs some food to show its best. Overall, I found it delightful, and a super value. Drink or hold. |

2009 Broc Cellars Carignane CarbonicAlexander Valley more |
9/8/2010 - swillpower wrote: NRTasted with Chris Brockway at 58 Degrees, this was the surprise hit if the lineup. The nose just leaps with strawberries and juicy blue fruit character. The wine goes down smooth as silk, fruity, balanced, a bit tangy, just makes you want to gulp it down...I imagine this lightly chilled on the porch on a Summer evening. Chris explained that he used predominantly carbonic maceration to tame the tannins of the old-vine fruit and add lift and high notes to this often unremarkable blending grape. Mission accomplished. He noted, of course, that, this technique is often used in Beaujolais Nouveau. Well, if more of it tasted like this, I'd drink a hell of a lot more Beaujolais. |

It's a bit sweet for my preference, but could work with the right food, since the acid is decent. Enjoyable, though again sweeter than I personally prefer. If you like an off-dry style, it will work well. |

3/17/2020 - swillpower wrote: NRFor this price, you will not find a better California Chardonnay. Nice apple/pear notes, citrus, and some minerality that keeps it interesting, with a pleasing nutty element. There is no prominent oak present. I would not say that the style is lean per se, as it certainly has a nice fruit component, but it definitely is not big or overblown in any way. It’s a balanced wine that tastes like it can age. Buy up while you can. |
