1997 Antinori Aleatico Fattoria Aldobrandesca Toscana IGTmore |
11/14/2009 - Rob-Rah wrote: 87 pointsPleasant. Served lightly chilled. A mixture of dried fruit and quite fresh and floral. Palate figgy, after the manner of port, without being syrupy and without the body, texture and depth of port. Hints of strawberry liqueur. Pleasant. Kind of hard to describe. A fun drink, but nothing very exciting or special. |

2/5/2020 - Rob-Rah Likes this wine: 90 pointsDark. Plummy and deep. A bit on the hefty side, with fruit tending towards the tarry. Imprecise, generic, ripe wine. Mediterranean-style. Well-made. Not all that interesting all things considered, and not really telling me anything about Armenia. Also this bottle the very lightest of spritz that needed to blow off. Overpriced. 89-90+ |

11/21/2013 - Rob-Rah Likes this wine: 90 pointsDark. Full. Smells like Chateauneuf with fresh, garish nail varnish on. Tastes like Plavac Mali dressed up to go whoring for the evening somewhere warm between the earshot of the surf and the main square. Deep fruit. Figs. Baked stuff. Heady. Lovely, but slutty and simple. |

12/22/2011 - Rob-Rah wrote: 89 pointsBrownish red; even a little pale. Quite typical for the Dalmatian coast. The whole bouquet and taste very close to Plavac mali from a little further south. Iodine, tonnes of baked figs and Xmas cake, a few stray floral elements. Palate initially tart. Softened with time. Quite alcoholic, and the alcohol/bitterness protrudes somewhat. Harsh mid-end palate. Final flavours are good. The harshness of the middle to end negatively affects my enjoyment. A little lacking in exuberance of fruit to mean that aging will help that too much. Could try again in 2 years... but not sure. For now, this is idiosyncratic (and I struggle not to go 90 plus on that ground alone), but not as fine as good Dingac. (89-90 perhaps on this showing) |

2008 Vinoplod - Vinarija - Šibenik Babić Vrhunsko Vino Primoštenmore |
1/8/2011 - Rob-Rah wrote: 89 pointsDeep red. Lively bouquet of flowers, deep fruit, tar and figs. Hints of boiled brussels sprouts and stagnant water (sounds ghastly, but really isn't). Quite fresh. Palate nice. Lovely texture. Full bodied. A little residual sugar. Clay, baked fig, raspberries. Vegetal notes. Good assertive slaps of bitter grapefruit. "Hot" flavour. Slightly Rhone-Syrah-esque. Animally. Plenty of deep ripe fruit. No great complexity though. Not a wine to cellar long: seems very good now. A very good wine and refreshingly different. 88-89 |

4/3/2019 - Rob-Rah Likes this wine: 93 pointsA more refined example than the other vintages I have tried. Quite classy in fact, though also a bit bruising at this age. Raspberry, herbs and funk. The kind of over-lushness you get from a gardenia blossom: indeed there are also strong hints of jasmine/gardenia to the scent. Good acids. Highish mouth-puckering tannins though not too terrifying. Puts me in mind of Chateau Musar, aromatically and texturally, in this vintage! Can be drunk now, but better after a year or two to settle down: at the moment it's a bit coarse in its bitter finish. 93 |

1998 Roberto Voerzio Barbera d'Alba Riserva Vigneto Pozzo dell'Annunziatamore |
12/26/2018 - Rob-Rah Likes this wine: 95 pointsLast magnum from the case of three. A good showing. Rich dark purple, no real signs of age. A little "serious" on the get-go, but air added some charm. Deep brambly fruit and a thick and tasty palate with a smooth texture. Easy to like. Just the right side of fruit-bomb. Vibrant and fresh fruit with depth of ripeness and a touch of secondary-character. Excellent wine. 94-95 |

1/2/2018 - Rob-Rah Likes this wine: 95 pointsFrom magnum. Pours dark dark opaque. How can this be 20-year-old Barbera?! Amazing bouquet. Deep, deep fruit. A bit figgy even, though glossy and stylish. Clearly very ripe fruit in very good condition. Complex and really amazing. Some smokey notes. Palate deep and sweet-fruited, though with some secondary characteristics mixed up with the fruit and chocolate. Almost slightly Valpolicella-ey or even a lighter Amarone. Sweet and porty. Nice bitter end, and long complex finish. Hedonistic. I had no idea Barbera could produce this sort of quality and character. Amazing wine. |

8/27/2013 - Rob-Rah wrote: 85 pointsStill dull and boring. Smells and tastes just generically of "red wine". Fullish body. Dark. A hint of tarry overextraction. I still remain utterly unimpessed. No positive evolution on day 2, though the extraction/varnishy notes show worse then. (84-86) |

12/31/2011 - Rob-Rah wrote: NRAfter my last experience (see note), these three bottles had a 3-hour splash-decant into jugs to air, before serving. Dark colour. Bouquet immensely reserved. What is there is fruited and dark and slightly spiced and pleasant, but it was barely there at all. Palate lovely texture, silky and rounded tannins. Plenty of body and enjoyable in character. But - like the bouquet - somehow managed to taste of almost nothing at all. Certainly not unpleasant or dilute or hollow. Just completely poker-faced. Half a glass was left poured and undrunk from the dinner overnight. I sampled this at midday the next day, only to find no appreciable evolution of the bouquet or palate. |

12/10/2011 - Rob-Rah wrote: NRDark. Opaque. Spicy nose. Fruit. A sort of artificial-candied hint, though I haven't put my finger on what it is yet... Palate, as others have noted, is full of sour cherries, and dark notes. This honestly was not pleasant to me on first taste. Very bitter and sour. Lots of wood. Stern and aggressive. It improved with some food, and seemed to open up and soften a little in the glass, but never to the point of being really enjoyable. Still, I am reserving judgement on this, as I think this wants a good long splash decant at the moment (2-3 hours at least). This bottle was pop-and-pour. |

3/27/2011 - Rob-Rah wrote: 89 pointsDark red. Bouquet a bit monolithic at first. After a few minutes opening up. Very port-like. Figgy, Sweet. Evolving into chocolate and sour cherry. Palate big. Not complex. Improving with time again. Creamy notes of vanilla. Chocolate again. Tasty and with a kind of decadent feeling to it, despite a lack of grace. I'm impressed and will definitely search this out again. 89-90 |

12/16/2017 - Rob-Rah Likes this wine: 90 pointsA good classic SA Cab Franc. Cassis threaded with lead pencil. Good and ripe. Lacking some acidic zing though, and very slightly ill-formed round the middle (like me). Imprecise. Should be served on the cool side to attenuate this issue. Nice though. 90+. |

7/4/2018 - Rob-Rah wrote: 88 pointsPours dark magenta-purple. Bouquet somewhat imprecise though ripe. Not obviously Cab Franc. Almost Portuguese (Duoro) notes but a certain "hot climate" anonymity. Palate OK. Tannic. Ripe. But generic and uninteresting beyond ripeness. A great deal of swishing reveals hints of graphite and maybe chocolate if you turn your mind to seeking them, but this remains inexpressive. Suggests a year of mismanaged (over?)ripeness. Tannins start to over-intrude with time. I think this is both unready and not-all-that-good. It was priced eyewateringly high. Clearly made with love, but alas not recommended. 88-90? |

6/20/2012 - Rob-Rah wrote: 90 pointsVivivd Cab Franc character on this. Cassis, nettles and dry underbrush. Some tomato and a little smoke and tobacco. Palate adds a generous shaving of lead pencil, a few more notes of green vegetation, white pepper and a zesty finish. Grippy tannins. Good fruit. I think this is rather good. Consider ageing for 2-4 years. (90+) |

5/20/2018 - Rob-Rah Likes this wine: 91 pointsA very good Bordeaux-esque Cab Franc - possibly my favourite from South Africa. Dark, cassis and graphite. Rich and delicious. A little bit flabby perhaps - a general note with this vineyard but this vintage seems rounder than usual in that respect - a touch more precision and acidity would not go amiss. 91+ |
