11/20/2005 - bsherwin wrote: NRI had never heard of this varietal. Deep-dark purple with black fruit and anise on the nose. A subtle bit of fresh garden mint (it took me a while to get that one). Ripe, lush black cherry on the palate balanced with a citrusy tartness and a hint of tannin on the finish. Very interesting. |

10/5/2007 - Vino Me wrote: 89 pointsThis normally sells for $25 but I found it a few for $9. I took my first bottle of this to friends house last night. It is made from an obscure grape called Abouriou from the Southwest of France. The grapes for this wine are are sourced from a vineyard at the bottom of ‘Jack Ass Hill’ and has a Southeast exposure. The vineyard was probably planted in the late 1940's. This grape should produce a dark wine but without heavy tannins. Only 23 cases of this were made in 2003 and 69 cases in 2004. production rose to a whopping 95 cases in 2005. Not sure about 2001. Luddite Vineyards is a one man operation which is owned and run by Steve Canter. As expected this had a deep red color. Not overly aromatic but all in all a very solid wine and well worth the money. A well rounded wine with integrated tannins that seems to be drinking very well now. I doubt this will benefit from further aging but did not show any signs of decline. Notes of blackberry with a spice edge. Medium bodied. Not the behemoth that the color would suggest. Very interesting. 89 points. |

3/11/2012 - DenisLee wrote: NRWas very intrigued meeting the winemaker this weekend and hearing about his process. The grapes are actually stomped by people with human feet. No yeast is added. The wine ferments from the yeast present in the vineyard. There are no additions of acid or such things. One gal even spoke of the winemakers kids doing back flips into the grapes at crush. Too interesting to pass up if you get a chance. This wine is quite different from Zin, Zin, Pinot, Zin, Cab, Zin, Sauv. Blnc. So if you are in Sonoma and you are tired of the same old thing then try this. I thought it had a great deal of character. Then I came on CT and see my favorite taster Richard Jennings and I say, "This guy is everywhere". |

2/26/2022 - Rich S Does not like this wine: NRNot scoring this wine because I don't know if it always drank like this or because it was probably aged much longer than it should have been but this wine was a mess. Port like, raisiny fruit and gobs of chocolate and oak. Couldn't even stomach a glass. |

6/21/2015 - vin0vin0 Likes this wine: 90 pointsReally interesting Russian River red made from the fairly rare Abouriou grape. Ripe plum, mushroom and dried cranberry on the nose. There's medium smooth tannin and medium acidity on the palate. The flavor profile is ripe dark plum, a touch of grape stems, tobacco, a hint of smoke, macerated black cherry and a touch of menthol. Really enjoyable diversion from the usual red suspects. |

11/27/2015 - EMark Likes this wine: NRBig hit of fruit aromas on the nose. Sure enough, an intense hit of cherries on the tip of the tongue. However, strong acid keeps it from cough syrup territory. Also, mid-palate hit of earthiness mitigates the fruit. Quite strong tannin along with the acid content makes me think that this one is a strong candidate for cellar time. |

7/16/2014 - Parnelli Likes this wine: 90 pointsLots going on with this wine. Beautiful light straw color in the glass with some citrus and herbs on the nose. On the palate, there's citrus, but a tartness with the ample acidity. It was great with the sauteed shrimp with garlic powder and a little creole seasoning. The acidity knocked down the heat so it was a great match! |
