Hawkes Bay Tasting (Prince Sydney, 40 Hansard Street): Meaty, savoury, blackberry, smidge of pepper and an earthy underpin. Slightly sharp acidity lends a red tone to the black fruits, it's a bit of tight with a touch of alcohol warmth on the finish. Meh.

Deep ruby.
Black cherries, black pepper, cinnamon nose.
Ripe black fruits with some dried fruit/raisins palate.
Enjoyable wine which should improve and drink well for 5+ years.

Belated Celebratory visit to Hawthorn; 3/4/2023-3/5/2023 (Hawthorn): Btg off the list. Purple colour. Good acidity and structure, and peppery youthfulness. If I owned bottles of this I’d be leaving them for a while longer - I think a more basic wine would be giving greater pleasure now.

Deep Purple. Pronounced. Ripe/cooked black fruit. Plum, cherry, blackberries. Pepper. Violet. Vanilla, cloves, liquorice, smoke, cedar, prune, chocolate. High acidity, high tannin, ripe & smooth. Med alcohol. Med+ body. Long.

Great balance between acidity, fruit and alcohol (13,5%).
Polished style. Not overly complex at the moment, but age worthy.

NB:
Some Viognier skins.
8 months in large oak.

You have to take time with this wine as the freshly-cracked black pepper aroma is so overwhelming that it takes time for anything else to shine through. When it does, you're rewarded with ripe black fruits, cloves, chocolate, prunes, and smoke. It has plenty of acidity and high, grippy tannins. Nice now but will develop further.

Renowned stony Gimblett Gravels in Hawke’s Bay produced a concentrated and dense yet vibrant and spicy Syrah. Aged in large FR barrels for 14 months. Deep ruby colour. Intense aroma of liquorice, spiced plums, cherry jam, cassis, black pepper, smoky honts. Full body, concentrated and dense, but also energetic and fresh, rich and juicy flavours of chocolate, toast, blackcurrants, earth, fragrant violets along spicy edges, medium acidity and medium tannins.

Deep red. Nose of deep red fruits, leavened with a little raspberry-like red berry; some black pepper. Juicy black fruits to taste, including cassis, with some chocolate and coffee. A pretty good structure with some pleasing tannins (perhaps this could last a few years). Sourness on the finish. Later, a sort of flintiness seems to enter the picture.

Vibrant purple-red, deep colour. Black fruit and savoury aromas, maybe a little chocolate; also a eucalyptus note at the back of the nose; rich but balanced. Soft and mellow black fruits in the mouth with a lingering juicy cassis. Balanced and good. Some sour notes balance the sunnier fruits. Good tannins that linger pleasantly.

rich transparent purple ruby, lifted aromatics of blue and purple fruit, chook poo, white pepper, young leather, savoury cold cuts, violets and woodspice. Sappy, youthful, bright cherry acidity, fine tannins, bits graphite and ashy earth. Coconut oil and generous violets, and more berries. Easy, emerging, concentrated yet elegant. A pretty wine, too young, better in 5-7 years. Nice mint finish.

Excellent . On the leaner side, with peppery blackberry and red fruits. Medium tannins, juicy acidity. While this has some sweet fruit initially, the overall impression is savoury with pepper again on the finish.

First Wednesday Wine Club (Napoli in Bocca, Haberfield): Served blind.
Red fruited, slight herbaceous underpin, biscuit and toast notes, leather, blackcurrant underpin. Medium plus intensity acidity, blackberry, chalky tannins, savoury, peppery...very Kiwi Syrah for me. Alex says like Cornas but without the dirty barrels.
I guessed Kiwi Syrah, possibly Hawkes Bay, 2016

On sight, Cherry raspberry colour with fast legging.
I open this while i am cutting vegetable, could smell the wine from 1-1.5m away. On the nose, its abit jammy, some red fruit, bits of spice.
Was thinking, its gonna be interesting but when it comes to the palate, watery thin, tannic, nothing more to offer.
Brought half case, #haiz, 5 more bottles to go. Damn.

Hawkes Bay Tasting (Prince Sydney, 40 Hansard Street): Aromas of black over green pepper, savoury black hued fruits, a little sweet spice and polished oak. Juicy with a slightly sour note to the black fruits, plenty of texture which is more woody than grapey, proves slightly drying and coarse flour textured, fruit persists, slight alcohol warmth. Time will help.

A touch of Parma violets to the nose here, a richness of fruit underneath but not overripe or over the top; powdery tannins on the palate, doesn’t quite deliver on the promise of the nose. Disjointed.
