2022 Sandlands Assyrtiko Lodi

more

4/2/2024 - Seafoam Manor wrote: 91 points

This isn't exactly what I would think of as a classic example of Assyrtiko, because it doesn't have the classic, Volcanic, Santorini notes... but this is really delicious. Very pale in the glass... like more clear than Chasselas and other Alpine wines. There's a slight mineral note to this, but it's a bold, fruit forward, wine... with a ton of restraint. Structurally, this is built on Med++ acidity and intensity of fruit. More on the citrus side, but there's a slight melon tone, with a light floral note, this does all the best things of, maybe, an Albariño... but a little better. Not something I would want to age, but I do want it with some raw fish, with the sun shining on me. The triumph and tragedy of this wine is that it's $22, but you can only get two bottles per vintage. In an alternate universe, I would grab two cases.

Sternowl's note. The '22 CCCC was great, and as good as or better than any other Carignaane I've had from Sandlands or beyond. I left a half bottle at cellar temp corked until day-3, where I found it a touch oxidized but still lovely. Just drink at will now for a great experience, guaranteed.

2023 Greek Adventure; 9/11/2023-9/22/2023 (Crete, Milos, Athens): Popped and poured. The 2022 “Dry White Wine” from Akra Chryssos was a brilliant capstone to our Hellenic adventure. The winemaking at Akra Chryssos leans toward natural but is more accurately described as extremely light-handed. The Somm explained that these wines do see some barrel but only for a short period and all are used. Some of the fruit is sourced from vines over 200 years old.

The 2022 vintage pours a striking pale salmon color which is, apparently, unusual for this wine as previous vintages were a more traditional straw color. I wondered if this vintage had seen some skin contact however, it has not. The Somm at Pharoah had asked her supplier about it and the only information they could offer is that the aging barrels had previously held a red wine. The nose is stunningly powerful. Bright, fresh pineapple, star fruit, lemon, honey and crushed rocky minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with high acid. Confirming the notes on the nose. The finish is long and saline. This was a divine pairing with a variety of fare including fava beans with anchovy, roasted wild greens with anthotyro cheese, grilled octopus and red snapper savoro.

Dominated by an unpleasant barnyard stink that would not blow away and completely hid the fruit if any. Also acidic and lacking flesh.

Might be a phase, or an issue with this specific bottle, but disappointing nonetheless. My first disappointment with a wine from Lapierre (across tens of bottles over the last 7 years), and also my first disappointment with a 2021 Beaujolais - other wines have all been gorgeous so far.

1/8/2024 8:49:00 AM - @ Thomasjacques That's not entirely true regarding the presence of brettanomyces. It could just be a specific barrel that was infected. That being said, considering the winemaking that's happening at Lapierre, I would expect things to get a little funky more often than a more contemporary, modern winemaker.

hmm, quite muffed at the beginning, needs air. but even after a lot of air it still stays really simple, somehow comparable to a really basic pinot village. but if so i a missing the clarity of those. not really animating and lacking excitement. One bottle left, will let it age and won't buy more for now.
Leaves me behind with a questionmark as there are many more alternatives at that price range that deliver what touches my taste. better with food but no mindbraker.
overhyped for me at the moment, nice artwork anyhow
if you like it super easy, that's your stuff atm.
medium glass, for now 87, also tasted in bigger glass but it got lost.

My first bottle didn't really begin to do much until I tried it again the next day and continued to improve over the following two days after that. My bottle last night was poured into a decanter several hours before our meal and that really helped to open it up.

Wildly enjoyable top-notch Fleurie. Gloriously expressive nose of blueberries, plums, wet slate and smoked bacon. Real bite and crunch to the texture. Firm and serious. Impressive structure and body but also light and playful. Deeply pleasurable. Whoever thinks Cru Beaujolais isn't fine wine is a fool. And at the price, it's criminally underappreciated.

Pure, like mineral water but with some silky texture. Pear, perfumed white blossom, white rose, white peach, red Fuji apple, grapefruit, fresh cut pineapple. It’s youthful, but the purity of the wine is astonishing and deliciously enjoyable. The balance is also impeccable between fruit, acidity and texture. There seem to have some interesting almost oily texture that is rarely found in Riesling but greatly balanced by pure, perfumed fruity and floral notes and a minor touch of fizziness.

Popped and poured; enjoyed over three days. Delicious on Day 1; sensational on Day 3. In the glass, the 2021 “Vesprée” pours a stunning blood orange color nearing a brilliant fuchsia at the core, which is transparent. Medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is developing with fascinating notes of strawberry, kiwi, those glazed candied citrus slices you see in the European sweet shops, rose water, and wet stone. On the palate, the wine is dry with low tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose with the addition of red plums. Juicy. There’s a long mineral finish and a killer texture. Wow…this is easily the most exciting rosé that I’ve had since the Tondonia Rosado. But while the Tondonia makes you think, the Vesprée melts your heart with its sheer beauty. I think you could age this? I have another bottle…I might just do it for science. Drink now (with a decant if possible). I was great on the pop and pour but it was even better with air. Lovely.

Strawberry, raspberry, lime, tangerine, blueberry, fennel on palate. Finish is pretty short. Drinking really well, great antidote to a hot day. Easy rebuy.

Fourchaume, being one of the most famous premier cru in Chablis, definitely has a huge number of followers. If Jean Dauvissat’s Montmains is king, Fourchaume will be the undisputed queen in terms of characteristics. Aroma of soft and elegance strike within the first whiff, along with very mellow and easy-going bouquet. Palate is obviously a big leap forward compared to all the village classification, and rightfully belonged to the premier cru category. A sip and the viscosity are undisputedly much better than a village wine, with great acidity balance, as well as softness and elegance coupled with power. With only 2047 bottles produced for vintage 2021, our allocation for this queen was rather pathetic, thus we treasure every single bottle of this gem we possess.

1st bottle from a full case. Holy White Burgundy, this is insanely delicious.
Apples, almost creamy and rich apples, with immediate notes of wet stones and slate, then citrusy lemon/lime zest, salinity...a nod to Chablis, then back to Chassagne or even Puligny.
Gorgeously crisp acidity puckers the mouth, with the slate echoing on the longish and lip-smacking finish.
This is a beautiful wine, a stunning value, and will drink nicely for probably 5+ years, although in the spirit of freshness, I will likely consume mine over the next 2-3 years. This is a case buy for me annually.

Popped and poured; enjoyed over three days. Best on Day 3 but slayed from Day 1. The 2021 “P’tit Max” sources fruit from Guy Breton’s oldest vines in Les Charmes; some nearing a century old. It can often be one of the harder expressions from the Gang of Four to find. The wine pours a pale ruby color with a slightly hazy, transparent core and a watery rim. Medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, so fresh! Almost like a spring rain shower. The fruit is so beautiful: strawberry, watermelon, kiwi, red flowers mixed with some anise and wet asphalt. On the palate, winsome structure with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ and I want to spread it over toast. This is drinking so well in its youth but this undoubtedly has a long life ahead. If anyone has multiples, I would recommend enjoying one now and cellaring other bottles to be enjoyed over the next 15+ years.

2021 A. Rafanelli Zinfandel

Dry Creek Valley more

4/2/2023 - thesternowl wrote: 92 points

Splash decanted and then poured back into the bottle about 5 hours prior to dinner. This is my first impression of the 2021 Zinfandel which is even more exciting than usual because the 2020 vintage was skipped due to the LNU Lightning Complex fires which rendered that crop a write-off. The wine pours a deep ruby color with a translucent core moving towards a magenta edge and a slightly watery rim. Medium+ viscosity and moderate staining of the tears. There seems to be some sediment already, however this is not uncommon with bottles of Rafanelli both young and old. On the nose, the wine is clean although I do detect some VA, well within the “charming” range. Very expressive fresh red and black fruits, primarily brambles: Marionberry, ripe blackberry fruit, and raspberries. These are accompanied by white pepper and soft baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. Alcohol is medium+ but not out of balance. Finish is medium. As usual, these wines upon release tend to be super primary but I like what I’m experiencing! Personally, I would recommend some patience when drinking these young. While they are no-doubt good, they tend to fill out with some time on their side in the cellar. Best after 2024 and should drink well through 2035. Oh…and this was an awesome pairing with grilled rack of lamb.

Popped and poured; enjoyed over two days and consistent throughout. The 2021 “La Dardouille” pours a bright purple color with a near transparent core. Medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, youthful with a bucket of fresh, darker fruits: blackberries, dark cherry, plum, and blue berries with purple flowers, black pepper, dried earth, minerals and some light baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium(+?) tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose with the black pepper really showing more prominently. Long, mineral finish. All of that being said, the elegance of this wine is arguably its most distinctive characteristic. This is a very light-handed Saint-Joseph and its transparency is a gift. Very pretty stuff. Drink now to enjoy its youthful beauty but some patience will likely reward as I expect this will flesh out. Drink through 2036.

This was a pop and pour at Oakwood Pizza box. I tried to give this a little air, but that wasn't really happening. At first pour, it was a slight bit grapey but after swirling and a half hour this opens up beautifully into savory tones of black fruits, dark red cherries, raspberries, crushed rocks, black pepper, herbs, and violets. The Medium bodied feel is light on its toes with a slightly thinner mid-palate while backed up by crisp, medium acidity and silky, medium tannins. This is clearly young, but this could really blossom with about 4+ years.
