This was terrible. Ive drank a lot of SQN, and have a lot in the cellar, and I don't know what this wine is doing. The other tasters apparently had a completely different wine. No time to pull punches. What?

So young at this point but wanted to see where this wine is starting off. Palate is quite tannic of course, very grippy, but the tannins are fine and will integrate much more over the years. Nose is nice, black tea, black cherry, soy sauce, some sous bois funk that will show itself more in time. Going to grab a few more to lay down for a decade or so!

Definitely not the very oxidized style of white Jura that I really am not a fan of. This has lemons, wet slate, a hint of anise, along with a subtle red Burg-like funk (which I really like). Nice acidity, and well balanced overall. Went nicely with tuna steaks. Interesting wine with a good QPR. I blame you Dr. Jura!

10/23/2013 - wineberg Likes this wine: 92 points

Congruence Wine Dinner with Steve Eisenhauer (Bourbon Steak, DC): Don't drink a lot of Sauv Blanc, but this was very enjoyable and would be great on a summer day.

Green melon, hints of slate, florals, slight spice? cardamom or something along those lines, slight buttery hint as well.

This was just a single barrel of Sauv Blanc from block 4 of the La Cerezas Vineyard in Yountville.

Very ripe peaches, slight melon, hints of tea, elderflower, and then bitter sweet and citrus sour of kumquat. And distinctive cat pee, which from what I've read tends to show up more in NZ SB, but it's definitely here.

Changed quite a bit as it warmed up from fridge temp; finding the cat pee is more and less prominent depending on temp.

Different, interesting, and stands out a bit from 'normal' CA SB.

1st Wine Night 2013: Green Bartlett pear, apple, tart acidity on the end. Finish is a bit short and abrupt, but a good bottle of wine, and certainly great for $12. I can see this being a bit more fun to drink in the summer with a good seafood dish.

2011 Congruence Zinfandel Grist Vineyard

Dry Creek Valley more

10/23/2013 - wineberg Likes this wine: 89 points

Congruence Wine Dinner with Steve Eisenhauer (Bourbon Steak, DC): This is from the Grist Vineyard on top of Bradford Mountain on the west side of Sonoma. A splash of Petit Sirah (4%) rounds out this wine, and it only saw used oak barrels. 14.7% ABV

This opens up with a smack of spicy pepper, and then gives up some blackberry and raspberry notes that are a bit similar to the Cabs. Lighter in color than the Cabs in the lineup for sure, but the PS gives it a bit more weight and depth than it would have otherwise. Smooth, subtle tannins round out the nice balance.

Seems open and ready for business. Good wine, though my personal preference is for the Cabs.

2011 Congruence Pinot Noir Sebastiano Vineyard

Sta. Rita Hills more

10/23/2013 - wineberg Likes this wine: 90 points

Congruence Wine Dinner with Steve Eisenhauer (Bourbon Steak, DC): From Sebastiano Vineyard in the Santa Rita Hills in Santa Barbara.

This seems to sit somewhere between Old and New world. With the cool year of 2011, it's certainly not overripe, but not a Burgundian 13% ABV either...Black cherry, hints of fall leaves and black tea, kirsch. Quite light on it's feet, nicely balanced acidity, fruit, tannins.

Enjoyable wine now, but this could be interesting to lay down for a while and see what happens in 5 or 6 years.

10/13/2013 - wineberg Likes this wine: 92 points

Pop 'n pour.

This shows great right from the start. Pretty consistent with the last note, love this stuff. Black and cool blue fruit, briny black olive, vanilla cake, florals, spiced meat.

Big, grippy, young tannins. This can easily lay down for a decade and smooth out.

Next day follow up: Actually forgot to recork the bottle overnight, so it certainly got some more air. This has smoothed out a bit, but it's actually toned down some of the aromas, most noticeable the briny black olives. Maybe it got a little too much air, but this is one of those occasions my preference is for the wine on day 1.

Pop 'n pour, leftovers recorked overnight. TN is from next morning. 13% ABV

Blackberry, cherry, briny black olive, vanilla cake, crushed rock, florals, pepper and spices throughout. My third bottle of this in a couple weeks, very good stuff.

Definitely benefits from some air time, and has opened up much more the next morning. Give it a little more time in the bottle, or a couple hours in a decanter.

12/2/2013 - wineberg Likes this wine: 92 points

Pop 'n pour, followed as it warmed up over a few hours. 12.9% ABV

Nose of lemons and lime, crab apple, and then shows underlying sweet hints of cantaloupe and peach, wet slate rock.

Palate has more lime to it; actually brings to mind a good gin and tonic with lime...florals, botanicals, almost that sharp barky quinine flavor of tonic, along with a subtle nuttiness; mouthwatering acidity.

Really enjoyed this, but will give the remaining bottles some cellar time.

Edit: Wife says this goes really well with lemon meringue pie

Lavender, fatty blue and black fruit, pepper and baking spice. Tangy grapefruit acidity on the back of the tongue on the finish. Balance is off a bit toward alcohol, it pokes though.

Another decade of life on this at least, but drinks well now with some air.

2010 Red Car Pinot Noir Estate

Fort Ross - Seaview more

4/11/2012 - wineberg Likes this wine: 90 points

So I find it interesting that Red Car actually labeled this wine with the recently approved Fort Ross-Seaview AVA designation. They might be one of the first wineries to do that, which isn't surprising as the AVA was only approved about 5 months ago by the TTB.

So this is infanticide of this wine, I know, but first impression reminds me of the Aston Estate Pinots from Schrader and TRB, which isn't a bad thing to me. It's not as big as the Aston, but is more approachable now because of that I think. Coffee, black cherry, tea, oak, hints of vanilla.

I like this now, but it will probably improve with a year or two in the cellar.

-- edit the next day:

I had to post updated notes on this, as I did have some of this left to taste today. Nose has changed significantly, and really mellowed out. Everything seems well integrated now, both nose and palate. Definitely supports the case to keep it in the cellar for now. Score will probably tick up a notch to 91 or 92 in coming years...

I also forgot another aspect of the labeling I found interesting: they've included a monopole designation, noting their sole ownership over the vineyard I would think, the same as the French use the term, and have also put individual bottle numbers on the labels...homage to certain Burgundy producers, certainly!

Doing this note after retasting on the second day:

I like this, but it finishes a little hot. Primarily dark fruit, with I think a little too much anise flavor for me. Interesting because I'm not sure I've ever picked that flavor out as distinctly as I do here.

I did drink this way too young, so give it a few more years, or decant a few hours at least.

Friday Night Wine Night 10/5: 8+ hour decant.

The first bottle I had of this was either off, or just bottle shocked between bottling and shipping; I think I drank it way too early and something just wasnt right...

This bottle was much different, and much better. Hint of butter, black cherries, hint of pinot funk, and the acidity is definitely present.

Give this some more time, or give it a longer decant.

Wine Night 1/11/13: Decanted yesterday, rebottled the leftovers overnight. Note is from the next morning.

Quite young, but I think these are made to drink a bit on the younger side. Strawberry, crushed rock/minerality, a spicy note, cream, not well delineated to me though, and not very complex when you get into it.

Pretty good bottle of wine though. Drink now with a couple hour decant, or some more time in the cellar.

Wine Night/Baby Shower: As everyone else has noted too, this is still really young, so give it a good decant if you're going to drink it now.

Had this next to the 2010 Aston Estate, and both I thought were good examples of Pinot, but the Aston just had a bit more refinement to it. Raspberry, crushed rock, dried meat.

Tasting again and doing this note after it's been open for a day.

Still very good today. Some of that nice Pinot funk on the nose, along with some blueberry, anise, cola. Palate has nutmeg, berries, meat, mushroom? Very light, smooth tannins...nice balance, 30+ second finish that dances around the mouth.
