9/21/2013 - winopops3 Likes this wine: 96 pointsEarly autumn gathering with friends: What a treat. Dark ruby. Nose of blackberry, macerated fruits, cedar. Amazing fruit quality is quite apparent on the palate where intense favors of blackberry and plum are balanced by secondary flavors of tobacco and pencil. The finish goes on and on with that amazing fruit coming back later. This seems to just be entering it's drinking window. One of those wines that remains etched in the mind. |

Sweet dark fruit with a firm underlying structure. There is a hint of minerality and tobacco leaf that adds interest with a medium finish. Thoroughly enjoyable now, but with great upside for the future. I just bought a case.

5/15/2016 - winopops3 Likes this wine: 90 pointsMild browning/bricking. Earthy nose . On the palate sweet red fruit and earth, citrus and spice adding complexity. This has a viscous enveloping mouth feel. Medium finish. This wine comes across as slightly younger than it's 16 years, but for me this is a drink up now wine. Very nice.

3/1/2013 - winopops3 Likes this wine: 91 pointsWent through 4 bottles of this with large group at a steakhouse. Decanted and poured. Very nice dark ruby. Expressive nose with dark berry, vanilla and cigar. Palate seems fairly complex to me at this early stage, with a well balanced attack of great tasting fruit, coffee, and cigar. Slightly drying tannins which seem to mute the fruit a touch and medium finish. This went very well with the steaks and represents a good value at retail. Should be better in a few more years.

It just so happened that everyone brought fairly young wines. For my palate, the California Cabs and Syrah as a general rule drink pretty well with 3-15 years of age. (Though certainly exceptions) The Pontet-Canet was definitely consumed too young.
