My second encounter with this wine: light golden colored; incredibly fresh and mind-staining nose of dried apricot and pineapple and mild bakery spices; like essence or highly concentrated version of a Sauvignon blanc driven Sauternes but with brutal freshness. So lively and riveting.

Unscrewed and poured. This has a medium yellow-gold in colour. Orange blossoms, ripe honeydew melons, with some honey and sweet quince on the nose. On the palate, there are stoney mineral honeyed pears with sweet mango and some figs; very good balance of fruit and acidity. Medium bodied with a medium-long finish.

It had been about 8 years since I had a Baumard CSC (last one was '07) and I mistakenly forgot how bloody sweet this wine is. Opened with some Thai food thinking that a demi-sec chenin would hit the spot with spicy Asian food, but I quickly realized this needs to be treated as a dessert wine. It is truly lovely with gobs of apricot and honey, and certainly it is balanced and hemmed in with great Loire chenin acid, but just need to remember the sugar factor. Finish goes on and on. That I paid $25 for this at Premier Cru is insane as it would certainly hold its high with any classed growth Sauternes. This has aged flawlessly and still tastes bright and youthful. I have another bottle of this (and of the 07) and I suspect it will give pleasure for another decade (but next time on its own for dessert or with nuts, blue cheese, foie gras...)

This took and hour or two of being opened for it to come around. Just enough woolly lanolin aroma to let you know what grape you got. Strong minerality. Not a ton of fruit concentration but enough for some midterm aging.

BUT this does come under screw cap now. I'm not sold on the aging curves for wines under cork and screw-top being the same just yet. But a few years for the fruit to relax is still probably warranted. I just worry that the seal will keep the fruit moving the same way it would traditionally. That's my pause. Even with that I'm laying a coupla-few bottles down and I'm not much of a Chenin guy.
Last note, this comes in a massive Pinot style bottle now.

{cork soaked 1/5} Consumed over 5 nights, none of them a (WS) 96. Perhaps this wine's best days were at release, because this, while enjoyable and pure, fell short of expectations. Missing, was the depth and complexity that I've found in many other Baumard QdC, albeit from different vintages; a base of QdC typicity, but no more. The acids just weren't lively enough due to either bottle variation or vintage. Held since release. Enjoyable, yes. Exciting, no. 12,5% abv. Drink up.

Served non-blind.

Thanks to Cole Kendall and a few others, I discovered the wines of Baumard awhile back. Unfortunately I seldom get to drink QdC. Expressive nose displaying mango, yellow peach jam, apricot, honey, copper and candied ginger. Exceptional concentration, dense yet precise palate, good acidity and strong presence of mineral and long finish. It still is all about the fruit as this particular bottle doesn’t show much petrol. This is absolutely delicious.

One of the most stunning wines I have ever tasted. Orange marmalade, apricot, candied ginger, sweet spices, honey and minerals. The palate is so intense and sweet but with incredible fresh acidity. The finish is endless and keeps pumping out later after layer of flavor. The balance between the incredibly intense flavors and freshness is what makes this experience so unbelievable. Wow, wow, wow!

This is the best from here. Reminiscent initially on the nose of the sweet Saint Catherine bottling, there’s tons of quince, along with white pineapple, salty mineral, lilies and flint. Salient entry, and a long savory finish that percolates in a very welcomed manner. Such a well-chiseled frame and a wondrous mouth feel. Drink now - 2027.

Short version - really tasty, a touch overbearing on the sweetness.

A perfect liquid gold color, this is literally beautiful in the glass. A nose of white peaches and pineapple leads to a long palate with viscous mouthfeel and notes of pineapple mango peaches etc. Very balanced on the tip of the tongue, toward the finish it comes across as a little too sweet (maybe adds a guava note or similar); a bit higher acidity would make this one of the tastiest things I’ve had in the last 6 months.

Deep orange-gold in color. Lifted classic aromas of orchard pit-fruits, quince paste, marzipan, yellow florals and minerals. Palate shows ripe and sweet crushed pear-peach-orange marmalade buttressed with terrific acidity and a long mineral and floral inflected finish. Very, very good and on point.

OMG. Long and intense with rich apricot and hazelnut lifted by a hint of lemon curd. Incredibly concentrated. Yet rich as it was, sampled alongside an otherwise very fine 01 Coutet Sauternes, the Coutet felt viscuous and cloying where this Baumard was clean and fresh. Only 12.5% alc too.

Two words can fully describe this half bottle-ridiculously delicious! Light golden color. Shining purity of very lightly botrytized fruit expressed as pineapple and orange. Moderately sweet but not sugary or syrupy in the least. Snappy acidity keeps it incredibly fresh even out of this smaller format. Gorgeous, lingering, completely harmonious finish. A great dessert wine. All of my notes have been completely consistent with this impression, and in a regular sized bottle, this should easily go on for another 10-15 years due to its balance.

At first the nose was thin but as the air had its way, this beauty released the aromas. Peach Peach Peach but also a natural perfume quality of Northern CA spring. The mouthfeel is HUGE coating every taste bud and hangs out for a couple of seconds then builds in the mid-tongue with a crisp acidic liveliness. Tropical flavors linger for a long while. A fantastic treat on a warm night. What a fun and exciting, 15 year stunner.

I love this wine. Beautiful bright yellow in color, with a viscous palate coating medium body that balances fruit and acidity in perfect harmony. Apricot is the dominant character upon the palate immediately followed by pear, mango, honeysuckle, and peach. No toasted or singed fruit skin like you might see in an older Sauterne, just a delightful fruit party in your mouth with a perfectly balanced tangy finish.

Aromas like smelling into a valley of rainforest. Honey--as in that local, differentiated, just-sweet stuff-- mint, scallion, so expansive. Bound, if at all, by tender bitterness. Just heavenly. Complex and so truly delicately pleasurable.

I like it but it is in a very strange place right now. Dark, sweet stewed fruits on the nose, but on the palate it is all tropical caramelized banana, guava and spiced creme brulee. There is also a little wild grape (Muscodine maybe?) in the background. Waxy honeycomb and a hint of melon enters the party after a few minutes. The acidity is still holding its own, making this a marvelous wine for food or just for the end of the evening. I plan to save some of these for 20+ years.

Last tasted almost seven years ago. It now has a dark, dark golden color; orangish. It still has a nose and flavors of appricot, some orange liquor, honey, slight almond extract and vanilla custard. Smooth,
rich and viscous. But it does not seem as complex as when last tasted. It's still a good wine, but I'm consuming the remaining bottles I have within a year or two.

A Jekyll and Hyde wine. Without food, this is aggressively angular - shrill acid, stinky reduction, hard minerals, and a pith driven bitter and stingy lemon fruit. With dinner (pan seared halibut, chanterelles in cream sauce, roasted winter vegetables), it is a completely different beast. Cuts through the richness of the cream, sings a power ballade duet with the fish, showing length and more roundness of texture, and elevates the meal in general. Regardless, this probably needs a decade or so to show well on its own but it’s an interesting case study in the alchemical power of wine and food. 82 without food, 90 with.

This tasted quite fresh, my guests and I all remarked on it being a 12 year-old wine. I think this is a great alternative to a sauternes - great complexity but much lighter on its feet than most. I think it could probably keep for a couple of decades more if not longer.

Out with friends (Scarecrow, Jonata, 7 Stones, Kutch, Rhys, Baumard) (University Circle): Pop and pour, this was served at about 52F. It had been some time since I opened a bottle and all my prior bottles were 375's. Patience was rewarded. This is stunning right now. This is why you age sweet Chenin. Golden in color. The nose has oranges, honey, minerals and canned peaches. On the palate, It is slightly sweet, but that has faded a bit with age. In its place is a complex and layered collection of candied oranges, honey and a nice minerals streak. Great balance. Long finish. Nice to know I have a couple more of these.

This needs at least 2 years of bottle age for it to even begin to reveal Wine Spectator's 94 Points. The elements are there, but they are riveted down to a hard core structure that at this point refuses to unwind the complexities of the varietal. The good news is that it unwinds a little bit each day after opening, but after a week, it is still hard and unyielding.

Opened and poured. Deep yellow. Clean, unbotrytized orchard fruit. Medium body, not that glycerine for Chenin Blanc, and almost off dry rather than exceedingly sweet. Moelleux style wine, more rich than dessert level sweet. Reserved but excellent. I look forward to following this over the next 2 nights.

More liquoreux and high toned after being recorked overnight. Now more of a true dessert wine.

Enjoyed this recently after a wine dinner courtesy of Tim Wallace of the Wine Vault in Charlotte NC. An unbelievably good, not overly sweet / not cloying and mature Loire Valley chenin blanc that at the average CT price is a fantastic QPR wine. In a very good drinking window and probably not a lot more improvement to be expected with aging but definitely intense enough to have at least a decade of life left with proper cellaring. Dark amber, very smooth, well balanced, full bodied, not cloying or jammy at all with a delicious very long lingering aftertaste. Nose warm and deep with honey, honeysuckle, burnt sugar and spices. Flavor profile consisted of well balanced honey, caramel, raisins, warm cooking spices and melted butter. Highly recommend this wine if you can find it.
