3/25/2018 - 1winemaven Likes this wine: 90 pointsCould have benefited from another year or two in the bottle to mellow even more, but still delicious. I have been known to pour bottles down the sink which didn't please, but Three Wine has never provided a candidate. Can't go wrong with anything from this vintner. |

9/8/2021 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 91 pointsRetail $20. Under cork. 77% Zinfandel, 11% Petite Sirah, 9% Carignane, 3% Alicante Bouschet. Made by Matt Cline (yes, *that* Cline) from Contra Costa fruit in and around Oakley. Why is that important? Well, I have ridden my bike in and around all of these 100+ year-old vineyards and it is really cool. These vines have survived despite the dozens (hundreds?) of warehouses, housing developments, and retail stores that have been built in and among the gnarly vines. It really is a different definition of “wine country.” I have tried a few iterations of this wine now and it really delivers, regardless of the price. But. When I saw this on the shelf at my local grocery store (I love my H-E-B) for right around ten bucks? You betcha. I might have to go back and buy what is left. On the dark side in the glass (thanks, Petite Sirah), with lovely fruit aromas: blackberry, plum, and quite brambly with sage and dark earth. The euphoria continues on the palate with an explosion of fruit, plenty of acidity, considerable depth, and a lengthy finish. For ten bucks? Back up the Tesla! |

2/15/2017 - LightDancer wrote: 91 pointsExcellent, unusual wine. Zinfandel tones come out primarily. Very full bodied with black and blue fruits. Well integrated now, but with a solid tannin-acid foundation, and massive fruit. We started the bottle three nights ago, and returned to it tonight. It's even better. I plan to not open the next bottle until after 2022. This wine can use some time. Then, I am sure the rating will be higher. Excellent QPR. |

1/23/2018 - Tony Poli Likes this wine: 90 pointsIf anything, this has gotten better since our last bottle a couple of years ago. Not as full-bodied as some of Matt Cline’s other offerings, this is smooth, a bit acidic, but pairing wonderfully with our dinner tonight. Last bottle, too bad. |

3/31/2013 - erb Likes this wine: 84 pointsI agree with other reviews that the wine is young. Initially tasted without food and found the tannins to be mellow and the palate to be heavy on the earth. Decanted and sipped with steak dinner and found the wine to be very pleasant. |

7/30/2023 - WineGuyFL Likes this wine: 92 pointsVery good.......classic Zinfandel. A lot going on, but not overly fruity. A good value. I will look out for a later vintage. I have 2023 down as the last year in the drink window, but it shows no signs of tiring. One bottle left. |

9/11/2015 - wculpepper Likes this wine: 92 pointsDouble decanted; no sediment. Beautiful clear ruby color. Nice nose of raspberries. Rich fruit on the palate, balanced by lively acids. Medium length finish with some tannins present. A delightful wine that should drink well for the next three years or so. |

5/4/2023 - NateR Likes this wine: 90 pointsWell done, straight-down-the-middle California zin. Fruity and oaky, big flavor and mouthfeel, and the high alcohol is apparent, but it manages to be a big wine without being over the top. |

6/2/2022 - WineGuyFL Likes this wine: 92 pointsThis wine has evolved to being in a great drinking window. I have had 2022 down as the last year in the drink window. I believe I am going to push that back by a year. It is a classic Zin with a lot going on. |

11/22/2017 - wtianseter wrote: 89 pointsthe 2014 is much bigger (Oh Really??) than the previous vintages that I have enjoyed. Quite nice drinking now but still tight as a drum. This one is going to quite complex and bold in the next 2-5 years. Time in the glass didn't really loosen it up at all. Black raspberry , blackberry and blueberry all strung together. and a briary and tickling middle, followed by a high strung tannin on the finish. Hold this at least a year if you can. 2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

11/13/2020 - Mark1npt Likes this wine: 93 pointsReady to drink from the pnp, but so much better 2 hours later.....spicy black zin fruit and a riveting acidity. Chalky tannins and bright red fruited ending with an extended finish of 20+ seconds. One of the best qpr of any wines I have ever bought. Matt Cline has aced another vintage in my book. Bordering on a 94 which is unheard of for such a commoner...... 2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

11/8/2021 - SpenceP wrote: 86 pointsPleasant and light, with blueberries and melon and, after a while, hints of cocoa and of licorice, but really very simple and lives entirely in the front of the mouth, fading quickly to almost nothing as it moves farther back in the mouth. There's nothing unpleasant here, but also nothing to pay attention to. Cheerful but vacuous. [I've now spent more time with this wine, and it does show signs that it might well modestly improve with a few years of additional cellaring.] |

10/20/2020 - Dezel Likes this wine: 92 pointsThree Wine Company 2016 Live Oak Vineyard Zinfandel (SRP $36): The dirt, micro-climate, and sustainable wine-growing (from vineyard to bottle) form the foundation of “Three,” yet Matt Cline says: "the dirt, the micro-climate, and don't screw it up (lol)." This bottling is sourced from a vineyard planted by Italian immigrants in 1885. The site is naturally low-yielding and produces a big but supple wine bursting with personality. It leads with ripe flavors of purple stone fruit, black raspberry, and a generous dash of pepper with a [muted] savory edge of dried herb and spices. In the mouth it’s full and nicely textured with just a slight grip of tannins on the finish. A wonderful addition to any feast—especially those that involve the backyard grill. |

7/16/2020 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 93 pointsRetail $36. 78% Zinfandel, 12% Petite Sirah, 5% Carignane, 4% Mataro, and 1% Alicante Bouschet. This wine come from Erin and Matt Cline, the latter of Cline Cellars fame. Starting at Cline, Matt has been working with this vineyard, planted in 1885 (!), for close to 30 years. About 2/3 of the vineyard consists of those original vines, on their own rootstocks. Dark red fruit, black pepper, and a bit of mint on the nose, this is even better on the palate. Rich flavors, great fruit (but in check), and layers of depth. If you have not had a "serious" Zinfandel (you would know if you had), this is a fabulous launch point to explore the serious side of "America's grape." thedrunkencyclist.com |

1/4/2018 - Tony Poli Likes this wine: 90 pointsOpened with roast pork. Our go-to with this dish is usually Pinot Noir, decided to try this on a cold night. Dark garnet, complex nose of red and dark fruit, some forest floor. More full bodied than our typical Cali Pinot, plenty of cherries and plums mid palate, some earth and a hint of tobacco on the back. All in all, a good choice. |

9/18/2016 - mdfuller Likes this wine: 90 pointshad w/ dinner side-by-side w/ the '11. The '11 is much more complex and in my opinion better. however, the '09 will not disappoint. it's pretty high in alcohol so put some food together with it (we had w/ chicken, rice and eggplant) ... it's an amazing story for this wine, bitter sweet, and a remarkable testament to Matt Cline. |

10/3/2017 - jhack1961 Likes this wine: 90 pointsStill dark vibrant purple. Complex on the nose with dark fruits and just a whiff or oak. Moderate tannin on the palate - so fruity it seems like a touch of sweetness but with structure. Med/long finish, still plenty of time left. Worked perfectly with pasta and sweet sausage w a layer of aged Parmesan. |
