Quite floral in nature, from there you find black and dark red fruits, spice box, tobacco leaf and cocoa. Full-bodied, deep, rich and ripe, the palate enjoys layers of opulent, fleshy, dark red fruits, bitter chocolate and licorice. The wine was made from blending 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, reaching 14.75% alcohol with a pH of 3.75. 5% of the wine is aging in foudres. This is the finest vintage of Lafon Rochet I have ever tasted. Basile Tesseron is doing a great job managing the estate today. 93-95 Pts

This is elegant and beautiful, and surprisingly approachable already. The nose shows a beautiful cedar chest, and very fresh dark fruit. The palate has deliciously fresh fruit, fine tannins that linger a bit much as expected at this age, but don't dry out the finish. The wine is medium bodied, incredibly balanced and utterly delicious.

A very good specimen of this classic Bordeaux vintage, which was especially succesful in the northern Médoc. Youthful deep color with still some purple. Aromas dominated by cassis and cedar. A lot of ripe tannines and adequate acidity. A wine with a good balance, very tasty. In fact the best vintage of this estate I ever drank. Is already drinkable now but can also be stored for several years.

This young St Estephe sure has a lot going for it. 1). It’s a 16 and a very fine specimen from my favorite vintage of the decade. While some 16’s are already in hibernation, this youngster is offering plenty of early appeal in its delivery of a slightly medicinal black cherry core, slightly damp earth, pipe tobacco and fresh not to mention balanced tannin and acids. 2). While clearly in the modern mold, this still had a very classic feel and to be honest, the damp earth trait is one I get more St Estephe’s than the other Left Bank communes - so true to its place. 3). $55 and likely to give 20 to 30 years of a high level proper Left Bank experience. Well, well done.

Had to try it after my very good friend and wine maker said it was very good. Found a few bottles at Trader Joe’s in Santa Barbara for $50. St Estephe’s always surprise me with their balance of big body, tight tannins and full mouth feel. This wine is still very young but shows a lot of promise. Reminds me of the 1985 Ch Marbuzet that I found and loved. Wait till 2024 for a great Bordeaux experience.

Wow. This is impressive. Deep garnet red color. The nose is classic Lafon Rochet: saddle leather and lavender cover a core of bright blackberry and black currant fruit. A wonderful mix of classic fruit and funk. Really jumps from the glass. Full and coating palate that covers every nook and cranny. Surprisingly accessible today but the finish shows a lot of fruit covered tannin. The balance is so good. I think I am underrating this wine. It has 95 point potential. Crazy value. If you like real St. Estephe, run don’t walk to secure some. (93++)

Decanted for an hour. A lovely garnet core with a ruby rim. Blackberry, pipe tobacco, anise, sun-drenched earth and flower shop. Almost savory during the sailing finish, with a medium to almost full body, and silky, layered tannins. So attractive now, a few years will help the harmony on a vin that I might be a little conservative about. Drink 2023 -.

I love 2016 Bords and think that this is a vintage with much backbone. Trying this LR confirms the great balance between all things required in an age worthy wine, but this is just way too young for me. I get some bell pepper nuances from well picked cabernet and hints of green that with time should iron out into clay and tobacco. Will be a real charmer in 10 more years. A 91 now, and a 93 ahead, so a 92 overall. HOLD_

I expected this to be shut down and was surprised at how well it drank after a three hour decant. At first the nose was intensely floral, with sweet spring flowers, blue fruits, with just a touch of barnyard way in the background. The flowers receded after the first glass and the nose got more savory with some red fruits also joining in. Palate was rather lush, with exceptionally gentle tannins reminding you just how good 2016 was in Bordeaux. Finish had gently peppery dark fruits. This wine was surprisingly giving at this stage but clearly also holding a lot in reserve for the patient. Try one now if you’ve got a case, but this seems like it will just cruise for 25 more years.

An easy afternoon with close friends; 2016 Bordeaux (@ FD): In the bouquet dark berries and beautiful oaky flavors. On the palate juicy red and dark berries, a lot of good acidity and firm, sticky tannin. Blackberries, full bodied and juicy, but still extremely youthful. Without knowing from each other, another participant brought exactly the same wine. No-one identified that, possibly because the second bottle had a lovely slightly rustic impression as well as some cherries. Certainly a great wine with a great future. I will probably uncork one of my own not before the end of this decade. 92 - 93

Could this be the best wine ever from Lafon Rochet? I think so! With its soft, supple textures, blast of ripe, sweet, black, dark red and blue fruit, coupled with its long, character filled finish, this was showing quite nicely indeed. Age will only improve this wine from here. The wine was produced from a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot.

Popped yesterday, notes from 24 hrs unrefrigerated on the counter. On the nose: soft cedar, red cherry, cocoa, soft plum, some mulberry. On the palate: the acid seemed soft yesterday, but seems much more where I expect it to be today. Soft spicy red fruit, vanilla, soft toasty notes...good acidity, cedar.. Good density, and finely grained tannin on the finish. Drinking well already, but this has a long life ahead.

More classic styled bdx in an accessible style. Black cassis/black-purple fruit, dry classic old world ripeness, bit of tobacco and earth, medium plus bodied and fresh but not veering to a natural style. Some tannins and spiciness to finish. Became a little bit softer with air, showing more of new oak in form of vanilla. Drank from magnum which I was concerned about but this was not shut down at all. Good crowd pleaser at a family xmas dinner.

Another attempt to understand the hype surrounding this vintage: Take Two.

Over two days, alongside the same vintage Meyney.

Strikingly more traditional bouquet, less loudness, more restraint. Blackcurrant, pepper garden, light roast coffee, worn saddle leather, gravel, tobacco, and black earth. Quite appealing.

Suave, too suave. Here again, the middle and back act simply as the mechanism that transports the bouquet and flavor profile to the finish. That is, the wine lacks middle and bass substance. Like the Meyney, on the second day, boring would be the best descriptor.

Unlike the Meyney, which showed elements of heavy-handed wine making, to the point of manipulation, this held traditional form. Recommend drinking by 2028 or so.

Tight and classic aromas with darker redberry fruit, heavy flower bed, dark stone and cedar. Pretty full-bodied wine that interferes with the freshness of the aroma picture. Powerful, but great redberry fruit, licorice, pronounced wood and graphite. Pretty long finish with perfect tannin structure on this great powerful wine. Give the wine 10-20 years in the cellar. Excellent wine from St.Estphe and perhaps the best wine the castle have made? 93 points.

Cigar box, earth, cedar wood, spice and fresh red fruits really sing out here. Full-bodied and loaded with ripe, red pit fruits, the wine has length and character. Age this for 5-7 years and drink it over the next 2 decades or more. Produced from a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

Tasted against 5 other 2014 bdx from other appellations (Gloria, Mauvesin Barton, Potensac, Fombrauge, Reserve de la Comtesse) Double decanted, contender.for.wine of the night. More approachable than some others refined tannins, good balance, blueberry and bilberry fruits. Nice acidic backbone and very drinkable. Will hold my last 2 as has many years left.

Double decanted in the morning. Drank in the evening with Everything Ahead at his house alongside a 2014 Malescot St-Exupery and a 2014 Bandol.
This was the most structured of the three, although more expressive than my previous bottle, and more open than a 2014 Leoville Barton opened recently.
Ample fruit and tannin for long aging, medium acidity, well integrated oak, and a lengthy finish.

Tasted over two days. Among the best 2018 Bordeaux I have tasted to date. So far, I have found many Left Bank Bordeaux excessively fruity, if more substantive than the hollow 2016 vintage.

Equal parts red and purple fruits and berries. The red fruit featuring dryness (cranberry and pomegranate) and the purple fruits showing juiciness. Quite a harmonious blend. Appealing interplay of pepper garden, blackcurrant, mint, drying tobacco, espresso beans, pure cacao, gravel, and black earth, on the bouquet and palate. The wine features appealing tension, precision, and lift, backed by considerable grip.

Oak, somewhat toasty, also makes an appearance, but is quite judicious, particularly compared to the stuffing. It seemed there were scorched earth and smoky elements here as well. These could have been barrel char, but seemed too well integrated to be be just oak.

It strengthens from front to back, a hallmark of quality, and finishes clean, pure, and long. A perfect example of young Left Bank Bordeaux that will add weight, range, and depth as it evolves. A better wine than the 2016 vintage, tasted January this year. Found this for about $50, a steal. Easily a 92 point wine as it sits now. Very likely to improve. Approachable now, better after 2027, or so. 92-93...94?

Espresso, flowers, cocoa, tobacco leaf, wet earth and red pit fruit aromas are all over the place. The wine is rich, round, juicy and loaded with sweet, lifted red fruits. The tannins are soft, the freshness provides the right amount of lift and you find intriguing notes of spice and spearmint in the finish. Give it a just a few years to soften and develop additional nuances and enjoy it over the following 2 decades or more. The wine was made from blending 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc.

I really like this producer. This feels traditionally styled, massive on the palate but there is smoothness there too. The tannins have a slight lovely sweetness to them, even though they are so strong and powerful. There is some creaminess, lovely leather, espresso and dark chocolate notes. This needs quite a bit more time - maybe another seven years or so to really be in its stride, but the quality is very apparent already. Despite the power, this is so elegant.

Lafon-Rochet is rarely a very refined wine, but it can be very satisfying, especially in a warm vintage like 2009, when the Cabernet-Sauvignon ripens completely. Good weight, lovely balance, well managed tannins. On its plateau of maturity, needs a few more years to develop its complexity. It should last until 2035 with ease.

I’ve had this twice now and while it might fall short of profound it is absolutely delicious. It drinks well after a multi-hour decant or over 3 days. Very charming; there is a healthy chunk of Merlot in there and I like what it does. This is just a great wine and still a decent value.
