2016 P. Dubreuil-Fontaine Père & Fils Corton-Clos du Roi

Corton Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

12/10/2020 - csimm wrote: 95 points

At first pass, the 2016 Dubreuil-Fontaine exhibits a decidedly attenuated and tempered conveyance of lightly spiced cranberry and black and red cherry flavors. It first fools its host into the belief that youthful linearity and pensive austerity are all that stand to unfurl with its current juvenescence. But with slight seducing and swirling, one is quickly gifted with a marked turn of foot by way of an intriguing mosaic of earth, orange peel, tea, and curious offerings of crispy-skinned turkey and jerky notes that not only add remarkable complexity, but smartly provide a subtle salinity that makes for keen persistence through the finish.

A very convincing Corton, with its convivial higher register red-fruited tang and sapidity cavorting stylishly with the citrus, game, and earthier berry notes. The Grand Cru intensity affirms its status in a more composed modality, but there is a building reverberation of flavor that provides sophisticated continuity. There is much to love here, and with some short-term cellaring, it is destined to be a wine that most impresses for its beguiling and distinct flavor-execution evolution. It is certainly well on its way to becoming an even more exquisite example of the varietal and its given terroir with a bit more age in bottle.

Tasted side-by-side with the 2016 Dubreuil-Fontaine 1er Epenots, the Clos du Roi distinctly displays more intricacy and mid-palate prowess than its Epenots stablemate. Though the Epenots is a fine example in its own right, the difference in cru is measurable.

94-95+ points for the captivating Clos du Roi, with considerable upside in a few years. It's also worth noting that the tariff on this Corton is a banging deal in the $75 range. Highly recommended.

Typical Bresaandes from Christine: delicious even in this young stage. Not overly tannic and what there is - is well-mannered. I really like the savory side of the dark red cherry fruit. Delightful and likely more intrigue down the road.

An initial straight-laced and flat delivery eventually inches into tasty sour red cherry, spice, and earth territory that provides smile-on-your-face satisfaction from start to finish. Earth and spice become more prominent with air. Still remains slightly strict and linear at this juncture, especially on the back end where it finishes short and superficial, but with enough flavor to keep you coming back for another sip.

Tasted side-by-side with the D-F Clos du Roi Corton Grand Cru, which is notably more complex and carries an increased drive over the Epenots.

92+ points for now on the Epenots. Give this time and it will undoubtably gain some depth of flavor and heft with some short-term cellaring.

UPDATE: I bumped this up to 93-94 points once I gave it a significant amount of air and after revisiting a Coravin bottle from a week or so ago. Loads of potential here. Still recommend holding for 3+ years.

Fairly dark garnet color, this is all Beaune, reserved black cherry and dark raspberry fruit, some meaty/savory notes, excellent acidity, fine slightly chewy tannins, some mouthwatering tartness on the finish. A bit brooding and backward still, but tasty nevertheless with plenty of aging upside. Punches nicely above its weight.

Very different from a bottle just a month ago starting with the color. Pale straw yellow and wan/sketchy on flavor when first opened, seeming more likely to be dead than alive, but two days later the remainder surprised with some typical aged white burg notes. Doesn't have the acidity for a longer term hold, though, drink soon.

The nose is well balanced, with cherry, earth and floral notes. There is reasonable depth on the palate, good acidity and a nice trace of bitterness on the finish.

Black cherry, raspberry aromas and some olive on the nose. Chewy on the palate with grippy tannin. Overall masculine and introspective. definitely good (and at $36 a good value) but not particularly showy. I'll the keep the remaining 2 bottles a few years.

This suffered from circumstances. Drunk as an excess/nightcap following a legendary wine. But I wouldn't be a huge fan under even the right timing. The oak and the acid don't add up to grand cru. It had the weight and taste of a good domestic chard. I have another bottle, so I'll reserve a pointed judgement until then, and try to drink it solo. I'm in the 88-90 range this time.

Medium light body, strawberry ruby in color, with a slight tinge of brick red; the flavors are on the higher toned side, emphasizing strawberry and raspberry, with a fair amount of somewhat jammy sweetness coming through, along with light hints of rocky, stemmy tannins. Quality wine, but a bit too high toned and sweet for my tastes. Not sure I see this developing into something of great interest down the line, I think it will just soften and turn more strawberry sweet.

Second bottle in five days, and my opinion has not changed. Very disappointing. No energy to this wine that leans to CA more than traditional France. Too much oak and not enough acid for me.

Notes of lemon oil, pear, some white flowers, with more air also some menthol. It‘s medium+ bodied, with medium+ acidity and very good overall balance. Medium-long finish with good tension and grip. Not the last word on complexity but a very good value in white Burgundy.

Intensive nose of red berries and bramble with a strong 'dark' foundation, that is difficult to grasp; the most concrete association might be 'hints of burnt tyre' and earth. In the mouth the medium acidity is well balanced, tannins surprisingly grippy for an Île de Vergelesses. Overall I'd say the 2006 is more approachable and more forward right now.

Color: Ruby red core fanning out to a reddish-orange rim.
Nose: Cherry pit, menthol, orange rind and some forest floor.
Palate: Cherry pit, blood orange, mint, pepper and fennel seed. Medium plus acid and medium plus finish.

Overall this is drinking well right now but certainly has many years ahead.

Popped and poured slightly chilled. Dominated by hauntingly beautiful red cherry-laden fruit, the nose also offers notes of Christmas spice, minerals and very well-handled oak. Surprisingly fleshy and mouthfilling on the palate with majestic acidity and rich, savory fruit. Bone dry with little to no fat, this is quite linear and streamlined. Not a shy one at all, finishing quite powerfully and spicy. What I love most about it is its freshness, energy and grip. Well, also the convincingly firm mouthfeel. Quite a complete effort, leaving a very clean aftertaste.
