Some astringency in the back, elegant woody aromas of treebark, undergrowth and cedar. Long, persistent finish. Very, very pretty! 18,5/20 (groups scores: 90-96) 4 people found this helpful, do you? Didn't saw this one coming and it knocked me out of my boots. Blackberrypuree, kirsch, sandalwood, black tea, dark chocolate, dry-aged beef and fantastic tannines that give way to an everlasting succulence throughout the finish. Number one wine. |

11/30/2012 - jkoenen wrote: 98 pointsItalian night @ Maurice (Netherlands): What struck me first about this wine was its amazing color... A painter's palette showing radiant and psychedelic nuances of gold, orange, brown and... olive green! It made me think of the tiling of a seventies bathroom, for sure. Also the viscosity of this wine was something I haven't seen very often. Nose is extremely elegant, yet complex and impressive: roasted pecans, Turkish Delight, lavender honey, preserved lemon peel, dried apricots and a delicately spicy Asian seasoning. In the mouth thick and viscous like olive oil, followed by a kaleidoscopic array of nuts and dried fruit. Fortunately, this wine also has freshness, acidity and grip in spades. Lemon-oil, balsamic vinegar, marmelade and stone-like minerality give this elixir depth and plenty of vivaciousness. Needless to say that the finish is unbelievably well detailed and persistent. Sublime. A total wow-wine, certainly for a sweet tooth like me, one of the best I ever had. 19.5/20 |

7/26/2013 - jkoenen wrote: 92 pointsOne grape - two expressions @ my place (Netherlands): This wine is very ripe and rich, but it stays on track and doesn't lose focus and grip. There's excellent tension, it's polished and has extraction, sure. But it's not over the top. It even has a powdery mouthfeel that I often confuse when a sense of terroir... Screaming Shiraz from the glass, this has tons of peppered blackberries, eucalypt, incense and a far echo of sweetness in the nose as well. Still tight and well defined, it's passing its turning point from primary to secondary aromatics. So, for me, this is in the sweet spot now. And it will probably stay there for a couple of years. Good stuff! 18/20 |

6/8/2013 - jkoenen wrote: 93 pointsDreamtasting #5 (Restaurant Merlet, Schoorl): (*) This is a beautiful, very traditional, classic Bordeaux, however only slightly impaired by the vintage. The nose was to die for... very elegant and gracefully perfumed; graphite, cedar, bright red fruit, and a very pure and intense whiff of that wonderful classic cigarbox! Alas the palate didn't quite live up to the promise of the bouquet. Allthough there is good weight, charme and precision in the mouth, it's lacking some sap, concentration and persistence towards the end. Somewhere mid-palate a vegetal hint of underripeness is peeking through, that classicists (like me) could suit, but others might find off-putting. Well, I thought this was a wonderful bottle of wine at the pinnacle of its life. 18-18.5/20 |
