Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel Blend, Zinfandel more

Very nice LS, rich, jammy, black cherry, currants, raspberry, hints of pepper, cloves and just a hint of oak. Still a bit of baby fat to shed over the short term, but what a beauty, should drink well for several years.

3/25/2018 - wineshaman wrote: 92 points

PNP, this is the sixth 2013 bottle I have opened, still have 8 more left, I have tasted many of the modern version as well as their early vintages. The early vintages were very good but lacked the personality of these controversial later vintages.
That being said after reading many of the previous notes most loved the jammy sweet fruit, the hints of vanilla and the sweet smooth finish, others hated the jammy sweet fruit, the hints of vanilla and the sweet smooth finish I am with the former. Weird how it works!

Decanted 2hrs, I think it is important to remember that what makes wine so different than many adult beverages is that it is and always will be subjective. One Budweiser taste the same as the next Budweiser, but with wine one vintage of one varietal will vary from vintage to vintage and even bottle to bottle. I believe there is no better example of this subjectiveness than Caymus regular Cabernet bottle. I have said it many times that one man's junk is another man's treasure, for me this is a treasure. That is my two cents worth and I am sticking to it! The bottom line, everyone is entitled to their respected opinion, especially when it comes to wine, after all this is America and it is a semi free country!

3hr decant,, very nice CDP rich, ripe, big, lush, plenty of kirsch, great acidity and structure, totally disagree with previous note that this was ready, on the contrary, needs at least another five years, with of course proper storage. 1 bottle left , I wii wait!

Fruit forward , modern style, cherry, plum, cranberry, little structure or terroir.
Another strike against the credibility of WS with their 93 rating, perhaps they are being provided special bottles by the distributor, as I certainly hope no other influences are in the picture.

2009 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley more

7/29/2017 - wineshaman wrote: 91 points

PNP, 7th bottle, last tasted 1.5 years ago, typical expected caymus style, blackberry jam, blueberry jam, jammy plum, did I mention jam, ripe, extracted, vanilla, hints of chocolate, a bit sweet, low acidity, low structure. Best to drink these while the fruit is still prominent, once the fruit has dried up this is going to be extreamly disappointing, IMO.

Opened and resealed 24 hours before tasting, big, rich black and blue fruit, hints of mocha and vanilla oak. This bottle appears more backward and unevolved than privious bottles, needs several more years to fully integrate.

2008 Joseph Phelps Insignia

Napa Valley Red Bordeaux Blend more

8/14/2022 - wineshaman wrote: 94 points

Brought to The Chef’s kitchen/Midlothian Va, where it was skillfully decanted. Paired with pecan crusted ribs, fried potato salad, house made tagliatelle pasta. This 2008 Insignia was quite good, excellent balance, complex flavors of currants, cassis, plum, cedar, graphite and a very long spicy finish. There were still some tannins that will most likely integrate with a few more years of bottle age. Drink now with a extended decant or hold for several more years!

Since 2008 this bottle is the 20th bottle I have reviewed of N/V Veuve and this bottle is the best. I have cellared this for sometime perhaps a decade or better. Full balanced flavors of golden pear, green apple, kiwi, loads of minerals, stone, slate, steel and low acidity which the way I like them. Paire exceptionally well with phyllo chills stuffed with smoked salmon, creme fresh and topped with Golden Osetra caviar.

Pnp, could have used an hour or so decant. Dark currants, dark cherry, raspberry, spiced notes, well integrated oak, still some tannins to resolve.
Quite complex, balanced and typical for a LS from a good vintage, should hold for a number years.

Decanted for about an hour, thick, rich, cocentrated, extracted, extremely dark, over the top, fruit forward, vanilla, syrup, blueberry pie, cherry cola, jammy, sweet all of these prior adjectives are used by both lovers and haters to discribe the wines of this controversial producer regardless of the varietal and I cannot disagree with any of them.

11/24/2016 - wineshaman wrote: 91 points

Last wine thanksgiving 2016, Decated 1 hour, paired with a 48 oz Porterhouse @ Charlie Palmers DC. This was a bit disappointing, super smooth, lush, rich, extracted, chocolatey, big port like flavors without the heat , lacks structure and the complexity one would expect from the pedigree. IMO not likely to improve but certainly should hold for several more years.

2/14/2015 - wineshaman wrote: 94 points

Paired with venison tenderloin, stuffed baby roasted sweet multi colored peppers, stuffed with herb goat cheese as a near perfect food/wine match as I have ever had. Decanted wine 1.5hrs, which help produce an incredible flowery nose, with sweet plum and spicy cloves/cinnamon, sweet blueberry, red plums, cherry, spiced fruit cake, fortified currants, just the right amount of vanilla. Okay this is certainly done in the Caymus legendary style and this SS is more complex than the regular bottle and is probably one of the better examples of this vintage however does not have the structure, acidity and backbone to age. Drink over the next five years for the freshness, complexity of sweet fruit!

Decanted two hours with surprisingly very little sediment, nice cedar nose, plenty of typical Aussie dark fruit on the palate, some tartness that turns dry on the finish. I bought two cases of this back in December of 2007, I now have nine bottle left and I see no urgency to consume.

2009 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley more

11/16/2014 - wineshaman wrote: 93 points

Decanted 1hr, classic Caymus love it or hate it, this vintage is quite rich, big and extracted. Huge flowery nose , hints of oak and vanilla, sweet currants, cassis, black cherry, plum, some koolaid notes on the palate. The richness of the fruit continues though out the mid palate and finish. I kid you not I could taste the sweetness of the fruit two minutes after my last taste. This Caymus (like most) should be drunk over the next five years to appreciate the sweetness and freshness of the fruit. With Caymus that is what it is all about IMHO!

Pnp, in inexpensive red wines I always expect fruit, jam, little or no minerals, low structure and this Rioja certainly meant this criteria, without the cloying manufactured sweetness often associated with wines at this price point. Amazingly there was even a touch of Tempranillo spice, overall a very good QPR.

7th bottle opened, worst showing yet! When I open a bottle of Caymus I know what to expect, I am looking for a big, jammy, sweet dark concentrated fruit, thick Cabernet, I am not looking for Lynch Bages, anymore than when I open a bottle of Lynch Bages And hoping for Caymus. When tasting these ultra new world wines you need to leave your old world expectations behind. That being said this particular bottle was plenty big, rich, jammy, just terribly one dimensional, unfortunately boring and simple, a notch below the previous bottles tasted. I still strongly believe these are meant for early consumtion!

Pnp, last tasted 6/21, this controversial, somewhat unique Cabernet continues to impressed, very rich, explosive amounts of jammy dark and blue fruit, plenty of vanilla oak, very smooth, silky finish, void of tannins and acidity. Personal note: 14th bottle tasted since 10/2014, 5 bottles left to drink sooner than later while fruit is still dominating!

Brought from a cool 53 degree cellar, decanted for 1 hr which brought the temperature to 62 degrees. Tasted over 3 hrs, served with braised beef, portobello mushrooms, tortellini all in a Marsala sauce. Unfortunately this did not flatter this shiraz due to it's jammy, syrupy components. However after dinner this started to get it's groove on exposing all that blackberry jam, blueberry syrup, with hints of chocolate covered cherries and hints of spice. Not the most complex vino in the world but nonetheless quite interesting, give this some time or an extended decant, but be careful with food pairings.
