2012 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon 40th AnniversaryNapa Valley more |
12/9/2014 - MoreWinePlease Likes this wine: NRShort cork. Inky red/purple, glass staining color. Nose is an interesting mix of ripe plums, bing cherries, cassis and ripe sweet black berries with subtle top notes of pie spice, sweet oak and prunes. Very fat midpalate of: black raspberries(the black cap kind), cassis and fudge brownie and...prunes that coat the mouth along w/ripe tannins that show up lightly in the finish. It's all a little overwhelming but not quite the blueberry pancake syrup I thought of when I first popped a bottle back in June. 90-93pts. depending on where your head's at or what you like. Parker's buds must be drying up to give it a 96 because it's all a bit much. I had wines he'd scored 96+ (Shrader, Spotteswoode, Peter Michael..., none of which tasted like this 2012 Caymus. But I did get it for $47 on sale. Tasted over two nights with very little change. Wondering how it will age??? |

1/6/2017 - MoreWinePlease Likes this wine: 90 pointsComes off initially as a rich fat boy Napa chard but as it warms up in the glass it develops nuances to the richness that finishes in a satisfying bottle accompanying butter sauteed shrimp, baby greens salad and toasted crusty french bread. Holding up surprisingly well w/enough acid backbone to keep it for another year or two in cold storage. |

10/3/2014 - MoreWinePlease Likes this wine: 92 pointsDon't know if this will get to be a Parker, 94 pointer in my book but it will likely improve to some degree. As of this tasting it displayed a nose of subtle waxy dark fruits, leading to a nice, medium weight mid palate mix of plummy black berries, black current jam and ripe plums accented with very subtle oak shadings. Good, bright and focused finish of the same. Nothing disjointed or out of balance here. |

4/27/2023 - MoreWinePlease Likes this wine: 96 pointsGenerously supplied by Brad&Molly prior to a blowout 2012 Oregon lineup of 7 top pinot noirs. the Realm was absolutely stunning: gorgeous pure fruit, fine aromatics of perfectly ripe stone fruit, subtle gooseberry segues into a rich midpalate of peach, honeydew melon, minerality, balanced by a wonderful citrus acidity and a couple other descripters that I can't bring to mind at the moment. I haven't tasted any of the top Bordeaux Blancs but remember how good Dagueneau Pouilly-Fume Silex tasted some years ago (price through the roof now). As far as ripeness, fruit purity, and balance goes, I don't think you'd find a better example, perhaps just different. |

5/4/2014 - MoreWinePlease wrote: 93 pointsQuite nice. Beautiful sweet fruit and creaminess, decent acidity and long finish. Good value. I didn't smell or taste hardly any petroliness that some had described, but then I was tasting this against a 2001 Trimbach Cuvee Frederic Emile Alsatian Riesling that would explode if you lit a match, as dry as it was. |

8/30/2014 - MoreWinePlease Likes this wine: 90 pointsMedium ruby/violet color. Expressive nose of red/black fruits w/subtle spice note. Rich mid palate of dry extract of black cherry, well-integrated oak, subtle blackcurrant, plummy texture with a lengthy finish of rich tannins, good acid balance, plums and black fruits. Structured fairly tight and Likely to age well for at least for 5 yrs. Went well with a NY strip steak. Evolves well in the glass for the first two hours. Good value. First of the 2012 Napa cabs I've tasted. I take that back...had a '12 Caymus a few weeks ago that was a bit like Mrs. Buttersworth pancake syrup; over the top but satisfying. Debating whether to write that experience up. |

8/15/2014 - MoreWinePlease Likes this wine: 90 pointsHigh toned nose of dark fruits & red raspberry. Tannic cocoa, blackberries in the mouth, somewhat dry, intense and alcoholic. Can't tell if it's getting better than a bottle I enjoyed a couple years ago. |

8/17/2015 - MoreWinePlease Likes this wine: 92 pointsCherry, toffee, raspberry nose leads to nicely structured palate of bright crisp red & black cherries, subtle oak shadings refined tannins and a mouth watering finish that echos the same. Seems a bit more elegant than past vintages. Brad would have given it a 93+. Kept its place in the lineup and showed very well. |

7/30/2022 - MoreWinePlease Likes this wine: 94 pointsPopped/poured. Very tasty, more like a rich, light-on-its-feet Napa than the Bordeaux I often drank in the 80's/90's. Good from nose to the medium-long finish that was quite satisfying. Likely to get better or hold for 6 to 10yrs. or more. Went well w/gas grilled Filet Mignon and fresh herbed sauteed morels over buttered egg noodles and parmesan/pecorino cheese. In some ways global warming has helped make available many fine, early-accessible wines from Bordeaux. Good value when first acquired. |

12/31/2012 - MoreWinePlease wrote: 93 pointsPopped and poured, single blind. Beautiful dark ruby color out to edge of glass. I guessed correctly that this wasn't pinot, syrah, melbec, zin and not from Bordeaux but likely a merlot w/some cab franc, although there was very little in the way of herbaciousness in the mid palate that sometimes announces itself with less than fully ripened fruit. This wine was rich and pleasing with mostly black/ripe red cherry and plum with hints of black berry. I was thinking california initially but we didn't get too much into guessing origins just if and how much we liked the wine. Drank well on its own but went well with the grilled steak, baked potato and baby greens since there wasn't too much noticeable oak that can often clash w/food. Fine, well integrated tannins. Drink now and out to 5+ more years. Andrew Will usually ages pretty well and I've had a few bottlings in the past that benefited from time in the cellar. |

8/21/2010 - MoreWinePlease wrote: 90 pointsMight have hit 92 if I'd decanted it overnight. Still have half of it in a 375ml w/screw cap and 32nd of an inch air gap(375's w/screwcaps are a far better way to not have to get drunk whilst preserving the juice without having to gas or vacuum it. Will try it again w/in the next few days to see how it goes. But for now good CDP and priced well. Good dry extract, fine nose of black fruits, medium body and 25+ second finish |

9/4/2015 - MoreWinePlease Likes this wine: 91 pointsNice nose of dark fruits and subtle oak spice. Rings all the bells for rich fruit (but w/a bit of high alcohol, but which no one made a remark about), plush mid palate richness of dark cherries/black raspberry, a little dark chocolate and cassis, ending in a fine and satisfying finish. |

10/9/2014 - MoreWinePlease Likes this wine: 89 pointsWow. This is quite different from what I'd become accustomed to and expected; more like Washington cab than Napa with bright fruit/acids lighter oak shadings and noticeable tannins in the finish instead of the oft dark cassis and caramel richness found, more often than not. Poured off half into a 375ml w/screw cap for later assessment. Inviting nose of pungent fruit notes w/sweet oak overtones. Let's see if it warrants a higher score with some time and air. |

10/7/2014 - MoreWinePlease wrote: 87 pointsDark ruby color. Nose of cherry berry fruits with a tiny hint of balsamic and sweet oak shadings that lead into a good/rich mouth feel of black cherry/dark berry, chocolate/black tea/earth of medium intensity/complexity, ending in a medium and curiously tannic finish that echos as the fruit falls off. Went well with the grilled ribeye and a good QPR at $15. 90pts if the finish was longer but then again it's better than many $35+ bottlings I've tasted over the years. |

2/5/2013 - MoreWinePlease Likes this wine: 92 pointsOpaque purple red. Nose of blueberry pie & black cherry juice w/much the same in the mid palate. I don't concur w/Parker's 94pt. rating but this has gotten better in the glass over 90 minutes. Rich and mouth filling, the tannins and oak are relatively well integrated and the finish goes on for 30+ seconds. Not super complex with layers of depth but satisfying enough. Fair value. May be at peak but likely to hold w/proper storage. |

7/5/2018 - MoreWinePlease Likes this wine: 90 pointsGood bottle good drink. Enjoyable, but probably peaked 3-4yrs ago. Stored at 55. However, this reminded me that I really enjoy ripe picked CabFranc, Merlot or any number of the blends. Owen Roe out of Washington does some especially well. Popped/poured after fridged to around 50 degrees to show its fruit characteristics. I initially thought it might have died from neglect or forgetfulness in my cellar but after 30-45 minutes after opening it started talking and I liked what I heard. Dark, medium bodied+ noticeable ripe juicy red plums, blackberries and subtle notes of cassis, you might think this is a cabernet. I'll have to find a 2014 and taste for myself what all the fuss is about. |

3/22/2013 - MoreWinePlease Likes this wine: 91 pointsThis is very tasty and likely to get a bit better over the next two years. You can smell the flowery fruit and taste the bright black & red raspberry nuances imparted from the CabFranc that harmonize quite well w/the plummy Merlot, cassis CabSauvinon and whatever else is in this bottle. Oak was more in the bleachers and not in the way. Good stuff. |

1/16/2015 - MoreWinePlease wrote: 88 pointsNice but light spiced aromatics of sweet oak and tropical fruits segues into medium bodied mouth feel of crisp stone fruits that linger on the finish. Not great but more than acceptable on its own and better w/grilled pork chops or rich fish. Not a WS 90 pointer but good enough for the money. |

1/6/2017 - MoreWinePlease Likes this wine: 91 pointsStored @55 since release, cork in good shape. Dark purple red hue w/almost no edge bricking. Nose of ripe black raspberries/cassis, crushed rock and dried black cherry leading into a Medium thick body of much the same. Still some earthy mineral notes attending the remaining tannin structure in what tastes of a more or less fully integrated wine of good drinking pleasure and medium finish. Drink up because fruit is fading faster than the tannins. |

10/31/2013 - MoreWinePlease Likes this wine: 90 pointsI concur w/ brian przyzycki's note but would add that the Rombauer sits well in the glass and gets more focused and not just on her ass. Also, have to admit that I much prefer Charlize Theron's assets and performances. Having said that; this is well made, over-the-top juice that's consistant and rewarding if you enjoy the style. I prefer Kistler or Shafer but can't afford $50-$75/bottle on a regular basis. I like the smell of fresh straw after the rain on a cool fall evening. |

Big lush/soft mid palate of well integrated fruit, tannins and oak...echoing in a long ripe cherry/plum finish, backed by ripe and subtly sweet tannins. Quite nice, probably at peak but not on the down side. |

1/9/2013 - MoreWinePlease Likes this wine: 92 points2001 is proving to be a very fine vintage. See, jerwin1943 and others for their takes on this wine. It has shown very well and gave much satisfaction. Everything is well integrated leading to a nice finish. Black & red fruits big in the mid palate. At peak, so enjoy and/or share the good news w/friends and family. After 1 hr. there's a nice note of Dickensen Black Raspberry jam, along with it's spicy characteristics, both in the nose and the mid palate. |
