2005 Château Rieussec

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend more

1/22/2014 - ctc Likes this wine: 95 points

A rich, golden, complex sauternes and a pure joy to drink, notes of apricots, pears and pineapple predominate. We had this with a foie gras de canard and the pairing of the two was wonderful. I'm so very very sorry this was the only bottle I bought.

Certainly ready to drink and in its prime. Decanted for an hour. I don't get the impression that it will improve with age as it seems fully developed now. Dark purple, an interesting nose, the first thing I sensed was lavender along with some cedar. Good, nicely knit soft tannins, ripe fruit, well developed, a little dusty, I don't know how else to describe it. A good, medium-long finish to it. I'd drink this by 2020 at the latest.

I never like Cantenac-Brown. Hope springs Eternal, I guess. I hate disagreeing so strongly with WA and WS but I do and I don't know what it is but it always reminds me of isopropyl alcohol.

I normally don't think much of Château Gloria but this was enjoyable. A good example of what a decent Bordeaux is like.

This is doing very well. Tannins are resolving nicely. Dark, rich color, a lot of black fruit and smoke along with an earthy character to it. One heckuva bargain.

I was disappointed in this wine. Not much of a nose and the last taste in my mouth was an alcohol-like sensation.

I don't know what to say. Past its prime? A faint echo of what a good bordeaux should be? But Talbot always disappoints me so it's probably me and not the wine.

Decanted for an hour. An excellent wine. A nose of subdued red fruit and a bit smokey. This is a mature wine with soft, elegant tannins and a long finish. I think it's gone where it was going to go and I don't have the impression that it will get any better with age. I wish I'd tried this younger to be able to compare.

Still young and tannic but definitely smoothing out, the '04 Baron is very dark and purple. It needs decanting or time in a glass to develop and has a lovely nose. Cherries. A very good length.

Second wine of Léoville-Las Cases always does well, even in an off year. Medium body, well constructed, refined tannins, the usual red fruit with a hint of cherry, I thought. I don't see this getting better, I think we're at its apogee now. A very pleasant bottle, what Bordeaux is (or should be) all about.

Better than other bottles drunk earlier. A very nice wine, garnet red, not particularly tannic, fruits are present, but subdued; cassis, cedar, graphite; medium-bodied, medium finish. Not declining at all. Really, a pleasure to drink.

Younger than I was expecting, still mostly red on the rim and mildly tannic, I decanted for an hour. Red fruit dominates and it has a pretty bouquet. A medium length finish. All told, a lovely wine, smooth and well balanced. That said, I'd been hoping for a bit more than it gave.

Good but disappointing, not the usual flair that Léoville-Barton normally has. I've read that others are waiting for it to come together better but after 20 years I just don't see that happening.
