How is it even possible that this wine is this good? The nose is pitch perfect with a bit of sponti, brown spices, green herbs, mint, kaffir lime, peach, apple, crushed stones and minerals. A touch of smoke. It's got tremendous snap, huge energy and drive, and it's thrilling in a way that throws the salivary glands into overdrive. The palate is delicious and yet sharp as a Katana - it feels like it's on the edge of Feinherb at moments. The lime rides all the way through, but the peach and apple compress at a point in the midpalate and also right before the finish. When they do, the mint, green herbs, spices, stones, and minerals, combine with the lime, which is more lime zest now, and that's when we see the wicked and crystalline structure of this wine. The finish comes back with a bit of sweetness and then dries out again - and the stones and minerals dominate as the finish trails off. Wow. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 18/20.

ok, WOW. Beautiful nose of lacquer, kumquats, spices and spicy wood, ginger, marmalade, creme brûlée. As good as the nose is, the palate is stunning, sweet yet light, great acidity and drive, fragrant and complex with honey, ginger, really spicy - vanilla, creme brûlée, marmalade and tangerine, woody. Finish is long and wide - creme brûlée and apricots. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5-6/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17.5-18/20. Delicious

Day. 2 Firing on all cylinders. Huge nose of peach, creme brûlée, marmalade, lacquer and a touch of heat, cinnamon and cayenne, enters sweet and moneyed with the cinnamon and spices and some peach, then a real grip comes in - great balancing acid with the marmalade and kumquats which drive into the long and wide finish. Just delicious. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 6/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5-2/2 = 18.5-19/20.

Decanted and poured at Maialino (brought the bottle). This is a knockout on the nose: very young and primary with soaring florals of violets, some sort of herbal thing - minerals. Also a very focused red-blue fruit component and some spices. The palate is way closed - nearly brutal. the focus is great and the potential is there but this is downright grumpy right now.

Day 8-9 I think. Nose is ripe and sweet with about half and half orchard (ripe peach and red apple) and citrus (lime and tangerine) fruits, juicy fruit gum, honey, honeysuckle, cumin, brown spices, blue slate. With time hints of vanilla cream and whipped cream. It’s sweet and crisp even with a week of air. The palate is just superb - it coats the entire mouth - slathering it with ripe peach, red apple, crisp lime, tangerine, honey. It’s crisp and exhilarating with perfect acid and sugar balance. Lime and excellent minerality dominate in the mid palate. Tart and crisp on the finish, lots of lime and slate. Ends with a soaring note of crystallized sugar. So playful and perfumed. Even with a week of air, this was better an hour after being poured and warmed up somewhat. It’s like the Platonic Ideal of Prum WS Auslese. Pitch perfect. Nose - 5-5.5+/6, Palate - 5.5+/6, Finish - 5-5.5+/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17-18/20 (with 17.5-18.5/20 potential.)

Tasted double blind from a small capped bottle (full bottles split for a zoom tasting). By the time I got to this people had already figured out it was Monte Bello. Huge. Young. Painfully young. Lots of oak. Coconut - the oak is super heavy but you can see the bright and potent energetic fruit underneath. The purity and drive of the red-blue fruit is immense. Spicy Graham cracker. Palate is explosive. Grippy and real seve - tiny berries and raspberries and black currants, spice and sweet oak. Finish is long and pure, sweet oak and spice and berries. This will be great in 30-40 years. Nose - 5+/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17.5+/20. (With 18-19/20 potential).

Day 2: the oak has integrated even more on the palate - still heavy but you can see the trajectory for this as it ages and it’s solid.

Day 1: This was pretty rough when poured but it’s knitted together well with air. Painfully young, the nose shows very dark plummy fruit, a dollop of new American oak. The palate is dark fruited as well but lighter in body with lots of acid and an earthy, dusty element to it. The latter carries over into the tart finish. Lots of good stuff here but this needs like 20 years.

Pours so light and lively. Kaffir lime and tangerine, rock candy and mint and green peas. Super focused but has more heft than most of the 21 Falkensteins with a touch of golden and broth. Nice spices. A bit of musk and melon. Some roundness there. Honeysuckle. The palate almost feels soft and honeyed right at entry but then the citrus and spices and minerality explode. Lots of lime and green and stones. This manages weight and lift at the same time. Finish is long and bright and limey.

Day 4. Beautiful crisp nose of lime and minerals, rock and rock candy, mint and sugar snaps, honeysuckle, this has really come into focus and is laser sharp with great acid and lift. Hints of spices. Palate is more ripe which isn’t saying that much - lime and minerals with some honeysuckle and a bit of more golden notes - a bit of peach and honey and red apple. As the palate moves into the finish the acid and minerality come out strong - crisp and electric, lime and rocks. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17.5/20.

Reflecting back on my experiences drinking this bottle - There is something really exceptional about the nose - the perfume and texture is enveloping and exhilarating - really 3-D.

Day 1: PnPed. Jesus christ ... who said that this was relatively open??? Not this bottle. This is waaaay tighter than the other vintages I have had on release (07,08,11). The nose is bright and really energetic with black-red fruits (black cherry, blackberry), some tight dark florals, a good amount of dark and baking spices, serious saline minerality, and some tar, licorice or coffee or something. There is a lot there but it is wrapped pretty tight. Similar flavors on the palate, with strong acid and young but fine tannins. The texture of this is superb and it combines well with the young energy. Now the finish is really something - this is where we see the material and the superb potential of this wine. I can actually feel this build in a couple of pulses AFTER the wine is swallowed - the intensity and depth increase, a sève develops. The fruit spreads out and is just so damn pure and deep. Nose - 4.5+/6, Palate - 5+/6, Finish - 5.5+/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5+?/2 = 16.5+/20 with lots of potential, 17.5-18.5/20 ???

PnPed. Oh god yes. For me, there are few wines that deliver like Produttori's Rabaja, and the 2011 is no exception. The nose is wonderfully perfumed with sweet and sometimes sappy red-blue fruits: strawberry, strawberry compote, black cherry, raspberry, along with sweet purple florals, some purple spices, stones, earth and a bit of iron/blood. The palate shows wonderful fruit and some flowers as well with a bit of spicy oak, earth and stones. The fruit is more tart and red on the palate than the nose, and the tannins are substantial but refined, giving the wine a great and almost creamy mouthfeel. There is solid structure here, but there is so much going on that the wine is very drinkable now. The spicy oak and sweet red fruits continue into the long finish and combine with some stones and coffee. This handles its 14.5% alcohol really well - maybe a touch of roasted flavors on the palate but just a touch. This will probably close down and come out roaring in 10 years. The nose on Produttori's Rabaja screams Piemonte in the best way with it's complexity and purity. If someone had poured the wines for me 20 years ago, my collection might look very different. Thank god I found it because it delivers a lot of what I look for in Red Burgundy at 1/3 the price. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5+/6, Finish - 5+/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17+/20 (with 17.5-18/20 potential.)

PnPed. My first of the 16 Riservas, and boy does this live up to expectations. The nose is all about red - bright red cherry fruit, dried rose petals, a lot of stones/minerals, some red spices, iron, iron rich soil/clay, chewable vitamins. Wound tight - one can smell the tannins and the acid humming beneath the surface, but there is so much in this wine that the nose is really perfumed at the same time. What strikes me is the focus and precision of the aromas - just pinpoint. The palate enters similar to the nose - lots of red cherry, stones, red florals and soil, with maybe some darker fruit and notes as well. Just as precise as the nose which is rare in a wine. Then, as other tasters discuss, the tannins come. Oh my how they come. Grippy and fine with tons of acid as well - coating the whole mouth with pain. The finish, what one can discern while trying to dig one's self out of the tannin landslide, is tart red - cherry and cranberry fruit, with stones, and iron and red clay soil. It's delicious and wicked in its early drinking window, but I expect it to shut down hard and emerge in 15-20 years as a masterpiece. Nose - 5.5+/6, Palate - 5.5+/6, Finish - 5+/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5+/2 = 17.5+/20 (with 18-19/20 potential.)

PnPed into a Conterno Sensory. Ok. Damn. This is a phenomenal bottle of Mosel Riesling. Incredibly potent nose of lime, lime pith and peel, crushed stones, rock candy, white florals and some red and green apple in the background. Laser sharp and precise. Electric and juicy on the palate - it enters sweet with honey and then red and green apple. Lime and stones come later along with some sweet spices. Tangerine. It’s full of flavor and yet so light and airy. Perfect acid/sugar balance - this takes over the mouth and entrances with its complexity, poise and zip. It’s got that gossamer quality of the best of the auction Spatleses. Not showing the vanilla creme at this point but we will see with air. The finish is long and airy and exciting with lime and spices and honey. A thrilling bottle - everything you want from Willi. Nose - 5.5+/6, Finish - 5.5+/6, Finish - 5.5+/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 18/20.

This bottle has been open like 3 weeks I think. Drank a bit at a time with it corked in the fridge.

Just screaming in the nose. So potent with great verve - tons of spices - nutmeg allspice. Cinnamon and paprika/cayenne apricots and some kumquat and butterscotch. More of that sweet and butter then the last bottle. Enters sweet and spicy with spices, spicy, butter, butterscotch Great balance and drive. Lots of acid buffering and hidden by the sugar. Long sweet and spicy buttery finish. Really long and wide on the Finish This is a just a bit weaker than the stunning previous bottle. Sam nailed this double blind as Suduiraut but couldn’t get the vintage. Nose - 5-5.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5-5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2= 17-18/20.

1/27/2020 - Seth Rosenberg Likes this wine: 94 points

PnPed. The first smell was a knockout with bright red fruits/berries, florals and savory herbs and game. But a quick taste showed lots of flavor but quite dense and actually heavy. Showing some roasted aspects and this feels too burly and a bit hot. Obviously the Tardive is made to age so it may need some air to sort itself out. Will try again tomorrow.

Day 2: the promise of the nose and the cuvee's reputation is realized. This has really calmed down and opened up. Dark fruits/berries blue/black/red with blackberry, black currants, black and red cherry, along with dark game and violets, the crunchy herbal Roilette thing. There is a haunting sweetness with some strawberry and sugar in the back. The palate is deeper and darker than I am used to for Roilett but it works well - perfumed and ripe and really grippy. There is a slight roasted note but it isn't dominant. This is silky now the fruit and the savory are well balanced and this has an excellent mouthfeel. Some earth and smoke. The finish is long, just a touch hot, but beautiful black and red fruit, game, herbal. Love it. I'm not sure, since I haven't had the 09 Tardive at all, including on release, but given the notes and my experience with the 09 regular Roilette a few years back, it's possible that this is what the 09 was like on release. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17/20.

PnPed. (From a Conterno Sensory.) Beautiful right out of the gate. Perfumed and precise and assertive nose - white florals, pollen, mint, rocks, lemon, some oak, saline and salty nuts. This feels more coiled than the 19 Temperance Hill. Just as good on the palate - saturates with lemon peel and zest, salty rocks, mint. Both the nose and palate are so crisp, clean and focused and so full of flavor. The finish is lemon rind, mint, salty rocks - really saline and it puts the salivary glands into overdrive. I don't think I would guess domestic blinded, and this has a lot of what I look for in White Burgundy. Honestly I like this better than a lot of White Burgs I've had at 2-3 times the price. After tasting the Temperance Hill I wrote Marcus and bought some more of that and this wine (I had only gotten 1&1 to try.) But now I think I might go back for even more. This is superb and I'm very interested to see how it develops in the next few days. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17.5/20.

No formal note. PnPed and I was immediately struck by the purity and the sweetness of the fruit on the nose - wild strawberries and raspberries. Also a pretty floral note of roses. Great lift and perfume as well. The palate has some similarities but is also very wound tight - lots of tannins, but one can see the potential and hidden complexity. I wish I had had time to sit with this and track it for the first 6 hours. The next day it was more shut down.

Day 3: This has calmed down and opened up and it’s great - the nose is a wonderful combination of bright wild strawberry with a savory herbal note that is something between alpine herbs and game bird. (I think that savory note comes out as olive in other years.) I really love the fruit and the implict sweetness of it in the nose. It's so perfumed and elegant and poised. Now the palate is similar - it's really opened. Velvety and herbal and sweet and red, light and elegant with tons of flavors that fill the mouth. Really classic. Fine fine tannins. The finish is long and complex - savory and red and sweet. Superb. Nose - 5.5+?/6, Palate - 5.5+?/6, Finish - 5-5.5+?/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5+?/2 = 17.5-18+?/20 (with 18-18.5/20 potential.)

took a few minutes of air to open up. Now a beautiful nose of strawberries, rocks and stones. Doesn’t have much of the signature savory-herbal note. I’d suspect that’s the vintage but it might need more air. Palate is fresh and pure and tasty showing the fruit and a bit of green savory note. Nice red and pure finish. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16/20.

Even better w another hour. The fruit is stunning - crisp, crunchy and pure with a nice savory mineral note. The palate is about the same. I don't like this as much as my favorite vintages, but it won me over with time with its exuberant fruit. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16.5/20.

Day 2: I liked this better on day 1. Now, with lots of air it’s still good, but shows more ripeness and less tension than the to vintages of Roilette for me. The fruit shows a bit cooked which it didn’t at apex last night. Probably 15.5-16/20 today.

From a glass that's been sitting out for about 2 hours: Airy and light nose of red and green apple, lime, honeysuckle, mint/green grass/green herbs, rocks and slate. A bit of vanilla or whipped cream. Palate enters sweet with whipped cream, honey, peach, red apple, lime - again light and airy, very delicious, creamy in the mid palate. Later in the palate this seems to falter a bit and lose some structure - missing a bit of zing, but it's a warm glass. Creamy and soft finish with lime and apple and some mint and whipped cream. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1-1.5/2 = 16-16.5/20.

New pour (cold): Showing some sponti and lime, more closed. Palate has more grip on entry and somewhat on middle due to lower temp, but still softens on the end more than I'd like, as I find all 20's do.

Day 2: ok, I was wrong - this is much better today and it was quite good yesterday. The palate and finish have come into pinpoint focus and that softness has vanished. It’s not electric, but it’s elegant and beautiful with some cut and verve. It’s still got that creaminess and nice minerality. Everything is in the right place and it’s just stunning. 17.5/20.

Day 1. This has been open for an hour or so. The nose is darker than the Asili - Blackberry, cherry and Black cherry, with lots of violets, iron, some leather, earth and spice. Just beautiful. Don't see the Balsamic note that I often find and love in this bottling. Palate is wicked tight. Tons of tannins and acid come down like a hammer. Pure fruit and florals - there is a real seve and intensity to the fruit and flavors - the tannins are fine, a serious mineral note that goes into the finish. Very promising. I might give the Asili a slight edge right now but let's see how this progresses over the next week or so. Nose - 5.5+/6, Palate - 5+/6, Finish - 5+/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5+?/2 = 17+/20.

Day 2: this is shut down on the nose and hard as nails on the palate.

Day 4: this has softened up some but doesn’t seem as complex and it did on day 1. Cherry and blackberry on the nose, stones, iron and minerals, roses, some heat. Palate isn’t wicked but seems kind of dumb. Hmmmmm. If I just tasted it on its own it would be a 15-16/20.

This, like the Asili, is definitely on the red side of the spectrum - with wild strawberry, red spices, and a really complex metal-clay thing. Cinnamon. Roses. I do get that medicinal note that others are getting. The palate is red in tone and calms down with air, showing mostly leather, tart cherry, and a fine wall of tannins. High acid - it showed some volatility and heat when first the first pour warmed up, but with more air it mellowed. I found that a slight chill on the bottle really helped focus the wine and have it show its best right out of the gate. I'm an Ovello fan so take that into account as you read. I liked this better than the Montefico in many ways - the Montefico is more balanced but what the Ovello shows I like more. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5-5.5+/6, Finish - 5+/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17-17.5/20 (with 17.5-18.5/20 potential.)

Day 2: Very similar showing to day 1. Didn’t clamp down hard like the Montefico. And again a slight chill helped it. I get a sweet marzipan like thing that I often associate with VA (Musar, Soldera). With respect to the red aromas and flavors, the word that comes to mind is piquant.

Having received a generous grant from the A. So foundation to study 2010 Baroli in their infancy - FOR SCIENCE! I purchased and opened a bottle of this. PnP - The nose is perfumed, elegant and soaring. It leads with primary fruit of strawberry and sweet cherry (Keshet nailed it with Pomegranate) and a tinge of orange/citrus liveliness and zest- the fruit is crystal clear. Also on the nose - nice pine, forest floor and herbs, a little spice and a touch of minerals and cocoa. The palate is pure - great fruit: strawberry and cherry, nice minerality and herbal quality. This is a medium bodied wine with great lift and good acid. The tannins are fine and somewhat chewy, but not ferocious. The finish is still young but currently sweet with the primary fruit, herbs and stones, ending with sweet and chewy tannins. Delicious now, with its baby fat, but clearly has the stuffing to age. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5+/6, Finish - 5+/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17+/20, with 17.5-18/20 potential.

The next day the fruit is showing darker on the palate - more black raspberry and black cherry. I'm not sure if the flavors changed, or whether I'm just noticing it now.

This is killer on the nose - hugely fragrant and complex and electric. Rock candy, honey, honeysuckle, mint, green peas and grass, lime, slate and rock. This is pitch perfect and sharp as a Katana. Laser sharp on the palate as well - more green and less sweet this is closer to the Oben than the Terrasen but has more material and complexity than the Oben - still just a touch dry for my Kabinett - tons of lime and green and mint, really brothy and full of saline minerality towards the end palate into the finsh. The palate is light as a feather and really poised. Finish is super saline minerality and lime. Lovely, but my $ is still on the Terrasen. 375ml from Crush. PnPed. Wasn't sure how this would show - would it need a day or two? NOPE. Screaming right out of the gate. The nose is just stunning: bright red fruits: wild strawberry, cherry, pomegranate, cranberry, savory game and a bit of herbs - but none of the green/herbal that often is in Roilette and Bojo, which works OK, but I like it this way better. Stones. The nose on this is just stupid good - so fresh and pure and light - it's just a joy. The palate is just as good as the nose, how is that possible?. It enters with the fruit and game - it's a bit darker than the nose: black cherry, strawberry, black raspberry - this enters somewhat tart with the fruit and you think it's going to continue through the whole thing, but layers of flavor and texture envelope it, making it bright with great acid, but so silky. The mouthfeel and balance are staggering. As you move towards the end of the palate, and when trilled, the energy of the wine builds, showing immense reserves - it feels like the supercharger kicking in for Max- the minerality, game and herbs come out as well. The finish is bright and tart red fruits, fine tannins, minerals, herbs and game that just coat the tongue. This is stupendous and destroys many wines that cost an order of magnitude more. I have no idea how Coudert does it, but I am damn glad he does. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5.5+/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 2/2 = 18+/20.

No other notes than Fu's? I guess maybe people want to avoid a repeat of the 15 shitshow. Well, I've got like 2 cases of this so here we go...

Incredibly fragrant nose, right from the get go, and very light. Tart wild strawberry and a bit of raspberry and sour cherry. Some darker notes - earthy and meaty. BUT, all of this is nearly overwhelmed by a green/herbal thing - is it green pepper? Kind of - maybe stems - very green stemmy. I mean a shit ton. With a few minutes in the glass the green nearly takes over. The palate is similar but the green/stems thing is more in balance with the rest of the wine - they still dominate but the other parts play a harmony/background role. Red fruits and earth, a bit of meat. It has nice sweetness behind the stems and is really light on its feet. The end-palate and the finish is a nice alloy of the green/stems, the red fruits, and some stony minerality. Really leaves a nice echo in the finish. I wouldn't guess N Rhone blind on this and I've never seen a wine this dominated by stems/green. If that aspect tones down and integrates with the rest of the wine, this could be great, otherwise it will be very good. I'll track this over the next few days. Nose - 5+?/6, Palate - 5+?/6, Finish - 5-5.5+?/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1+?/2 = 16-16.5+?/20 (with 16-18/20 potential.)

Pour that's had a good amount of air: this shows lots of dark spices, earth, leather, and sour-ish black cherry fruit. Tar. The palate is very closed with a ton of acid and tannins.

A new pour (bottle has been open about 3 hours now), shows an intoxicating mix of dark fruits and a menthol note, maybe some tree bark - birch beer kind of thing. Bright acid. The fruit is harder to pin down - boysenberry? black raspberry and blueberry? The palate is tart and wicked and hard to get a read on. Right now, this is the least impressive of the 16 Riservas I've had (Asili, Rabaja, Montefico, Ovello, and this.) Is it possible that it's so wound that it is superior but will only show that with decades? I guess, but to me I'd rather have the others - that show huge potential and reserves, but also show some of their complexity now. 16.5/20.
