Decanted for 3.5 hours. Aromas of blueberry, cherry, kirsch liquor, iron and chocolate Grenache. Flavors of blueberry, raspberry, cherry, iron and coffee. Ends with a 40 second finish with raspberry notes. Needs some more time to open up. Will update.

Update: started to shut down around the 5 hour mark for some reason. Saved the rest and had on day 2. More open for business for sure with smoother tannins and more pronounced fruit.

From the Coravin and let sit in the glass for 2 hours. Aromas of cherry, brown sugar, rhubarb, strawberry and a hint of earth. Flavors of strawberry, cherry, hint of cola, mushroom and earth. Ends with a nice finish of 30+ seconds with black cherry and earth notes. For $40 this is a steal. Might need to go back and get a few more.

Going super strong!! This has aged incredibly well. Pronounced black currant kote on the nose very similar to the nose on the 2006 Carlisle Vineyard Zin consumed recently. A weather related note from 2006? A winemaking related note from this period at Carlisle? I don’t know, but it is of Cab-like intensity. Further, all the ‘usual’ zin goodness from Carlisle; brambly fruit, both fresh and candied, chocolate, creamy malo texture, zin-spice of cardamom, cinnamon and cloves. Another masterpiece from Carlisle. What happened to this vineyard? The back label says this was the last vintage. Too bad...

Pop and pour. Aromas boysenberry, blueberry, huckleberry, wild cherry and lavender. Nose has a lot going on. Flavors of boysenberry, blueberry, huckleberry, wild cherry, blackberry and a hint of black pepper. Ends with a long finish of 40-45 seconds with boysenberry and blackberry notes. Get some prickly tannins if the first few sips of this but not a nuisance. Probably the best Montifi in recent memory and that is saying something.

Flavors of chocolate, herbs, smoked meats, iron and earth. Ends with a long iron infused finish of 25-30 seconds. Got just a slight bit of heat on this but nothing I was overly concerned about. This was my favorite wine of the night. I thought it was mine and turns out I was right although it did seem this had a bit more Syrah in there than I remember. That threw me off initially. This finished 3rd on the night.

Really quite unique. Reminds me of a le meal I had a while back. Flavors of melon, star fruit, saline, sea salt and tangerine. Upon first tasting this it was still a tad tight but when I re-tasted 30-45 minutes later it had really opened up so I raised my score. Ended with a great 25-30 second finish. This really packs a lot of flavor in there without any heat. My wine of the night and the Group's #2.

Slow oxed for 5 hours. Nose of blackberry, currant, mocha, forest floor and dried cherry. Flavors of blackberry, currant, dried cherry, mocha, touch of earth and touch of herb. Ends with a long mocha infused 45+ finish. This is still quite tannic and could easily use a 4 hour decant. This score may change as the wine develops in the glass.

Increased the score by a point once the tannins settled.

Aromas of blueberry, raspberry, violets and boysenberry. Took some time to come around but started to show the hallmarks of the William Septem Zin: a Zin made like a Pinot. Flavors of blueberry, raspberry, mulberry and sour cherry. Still a jammy Zin but has a restrained elegance. Ends with a raspberry infused finish of about 20+ seconds. Sadly, my last William Selyem Zin and won't be buy anymore because they have became too expensive.

11/20/2016 4:37:00 AM - Totally agree. They have really priced me out of their wines. The appellation wines have never been that great, only the SVD's. I do like the wines but I can find something of similar quality for half the price these days. And your right, these aren't collectors items so they really don't go up in value. I love Kosta Browne as well but even they are getting really expensive. At least their appellation wines are of much higher quality.

Popped and poured. Opened up nicely over 20 minutes. Aromas of blackberry, violets, cherry and white chocolate. On the palate, it has flavors of blackberry, dark cherry, melted chocolate, kirsch liquor and a touch of iron. Ends with an impressive of about 25-30 seconds. It got better as it got more air. This has developed more into a classic Napa Cabernet. When I had it initially it was more Bordeaux like. Certainly not anywhere near dead as someone suggested. Parker was spot on with this one.

Sorry if I elaborate on this wine. I only do so as I am worried the best part of this wine is missed. First take out of the refrigerator and decant it for 15 minutes. This is not a wine to be hurried. I use (and anything will do) Bordeaux Riedel glasses. Fill the glass about 1/8 full. If you take the palm of your had while swirling and you get a good chill the wine is too cold. I find taking my time releases incredible aromas that are balanced with perfect acid to be refreshing. I cannot tell you how many times a guest at our house comes back with a glass that has been nursed for an hour-Dave-you have to smell this-this is incredible-please take a taste. Of course that magic window does not last forever. Simply filling up a glass halfway and drinking it is like pulling the turkey out of the oven a couple hours to early. Well that was not the best metaphor but you get the idea. The wines charms for some reason-needs to be beguiled out of the glass. But the slow process warms the senses and soul. Dave

Had this bottle with Matt-a friend online. Well actually it was not the same bottle. Very brief explanation. I had two bottles-sent him one and we agreed to open on the same day. My bottle when first decanted had a very sour nose and taste. It was that high pitched smell that is hard to put into words. Vinegar with a touch, just a touch of nail polish. Decanted two hours-still bad. Had a large party at our house and grabbed the decanter an hour after last assessment. Poof-the ugly elements vanished. In it's place on the nose was some dark fruit mixed with some sweeter bark notes. The palate emulated the same package. This was a wine that did not hit you over the head with weight but rather glided across the palate.
