2019 Château Pape Clément

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend more

Bafflingly mace and nutmeg heavy on opening, little else. Eventually opens up with leather, strawberry and an almost Barolo like tar. Bitter chocolate on the finish. Returning five hours later, I see little improvement.
Clearly opened very early but even so, very unforgiving and rather lacklustre.

(Before you all have a strop, I use much more of a score range than your redundant 89-95)

2019 Château Batailley

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

The nose has a good helping of blackberry, a little cherry, some cedar and pencil case. A lot of reviews say graphite but for me it’s certainly more remnant of the pencil, rubber and protractor set you had when you were 12. It doesn’t dominate too much however unlike some other Pauillac classroom collages I’ve had.

The palate has prominent underripe green fig with black cherry, tobacco, pencil case and a distinctly herbaceous character. It’s very much dry and in fact borderline bitter, which along with any green notes I attribute to me knowingly infanticiding the bottle. The tannin is grippy and aggressive yet the fantastic structure is clearly evident and I find myself enjoying this very much indeed.

Leather, flint and rose on the finish, like a bouquet bought fresh from the quarry by a miner in chaps.

I’ve had Batailey before but can’t quite remember enjoying it anywhere close to this one. Good vintage was it? I would absolutely love to revisit this in say half a decade’s time, if not a little longer. Great stuff.

1/14/2024 7:21:00 AM - Yes, but it helps scoring if everyone is using the charts recommended by CT. I don’t see how one could make a difference between a score of 73 and 74 if you use the whole scale. CT guidance is as follows:
CellarTracker uses a 50-100 point scale for rating wines.

    Score Grade Meaning
    98-100 A+ Extraordinary
    94-97 A Outstanding
    90-93 A- Excellent
    86-89 B+ Very Good
    80-85 B Good
    70-79 C Below/Average
    50-69 D Avoid

Dark fruits turning to redish with time in the glass. Very mature nose of damp forest floor and mushrooms. Would say it is in prime based on how evolved it is yet delivers a clean and precise experience on palate.

12/3/2023 6:44:00 AM - There seems to be very little information about this wine online. I’ve tried three bottles and still have another 3 in cellar. For me they seemed a bit ”sweet” for my taste. Wondering if it’s an issue with my wines or general issue. You didn’t feel them being a bit sweet?

2 of 6. I am really unhappy with this wine. Bought on release and stored perfectly. Wine is tart and almost sour. i was hoping it would go well with Fathers Day steaks but it was not good. On Day 2 it did not improve and started to fall apart a bit. Will put in the fridge and try again in a day or two. Maybe a bad bottle?

  • Comment posted by Lemmy-W:

6/20/2022 10:41:00 PM - Sounds like a bad bottle. tart and sour sounds like heat damaged, but in case you bought it on release and stored well, maybe it's something else (unless it was badly exposed to heat during transportation).

Scoring at the top of the range, this is a majestic vintage of Valandraud that is packed and stacked with waves of inky, purple colored, black cherries, plums, mint, espresso, cocoa, licorice, flowers and crushed rocks. Full-bodied, rich, intense, opulent, complex and with a fruit-filled, velvet-textured, non-stop finish, this is already a treat in your glass. Drink from 2026-2055.

4/1/2022 2:43:00 AM - hi Jeff, thanks again for great reviews on 2019 vintage. Still waiting for my primeurs to arrive, but seems they are worth waiting. Still pondering whether or not to try any of them during this year or try to store them in cellar for years to come. Majority of my Bordeaux's are from 2016, 2018 and 2019. Any general hint on their drinking window and the best way to avoid the closed phase with those?

Opened 2 hours before dinner and enjoyed over another 2. Kept improving.

This carries the warmth of the vintage, but with notes of sunkissed earth, fresh plums and savoury notes of sundried tomatoes, oregano and thyme. No jammy notes or noticeable alcohol heat. This is in addition to the dark cherries (fresh, not preserved amarena) and tobacco leaf you expect from Rancia. Quite a different wine to the 2016, but overall just a great Chianti which can be enjoyed now or left in the cellar.

4/1/2021 3:53:00 AM - What I struggle most is 95-100. This comes mainly from wine being complex, but sometimes I feel that my judgement and taste aren't good enough to decide which wines should go 95 and beyond. Guess I've never tasted one. :-)

Though I agree that if wine is good (80-85), I tend to rate it between 85-88. I hardly ever go below 80, wine needs to be terrible.

The knockout nose, with all its sensations of cherry, plum liqueur, smoke, licorice, kirsch, flowers and boysenberry is all you need to know this is great wine. On the palate, the wine meshes silk and velvet textured fruits with minerality seamlessly. Long, intense, expansive, stony and character driven, this is going to offer sublime tasting experiences if you can wait for at least 7 years before pulling a cork. The wine blends 78% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon.
