Just a splash decant, so maybe it needs serious time in decanter and/or more age….but that said, I expected a helluva lot more (especially since I have a case). It’s dark, brooding, has that deep, sultry Syrah profile but lacking depth, burst of flavor, complexity. It somehow compares more with a Clape Cornas or an aged Tempier, but at same time lacking the profound character and ties to the land I taste (or imagine) when I drink those. Hoping this ages into something a bit different and more attractive.

    2/1/2024 11:08:00 PM - Nontaco thanks for your tasting note much appreciated. With much experience with Grange this vintage is still considered a youngster and needs more time to develop. But if you want to drink a "young" Grange then I suggest at least 8 hours decant beforehand. Hope the rest of the case shows better.

Festival of Phil (Phil's place, Putney, Sydney): From Coravin. Meaty, savoury, slightly sour smelling red over black fruits, a little pepper and leather. Fruit is almost a little jubey on the palate, black hued with chalky, drying, grainy tannins, then swing by but the fruit, assisted by the alcohol, persists and carries long. Nice.

The Grand Tour - day twelve (Bordeaux): Decanted. Farmyard, leather, leather, crushed rock, black currant, spice, tobacco on the nose. Soft, sweet black fruit then fine, soft slightly floury tannins. There is some leather as well but this is surprisingly youthful. Yum..

Coravin fun - Senejac mini-vertical (Kennards, Waterloo): From Coravin. Lovely ripe blackcurrant with the beginnings of some leather but also some almost confected cherry notes here as well. Touches of dusty spice. More fleshy than juicy with black tea notes joining the blackcurrant fruit and surprisingly fine grained tannins. Little alcohol warmth on the finish as well but not too obtrusive. Yum.

Agree with you, love this label and also Lafon Rochet from Bordeaux ... my two favourite bargains from the region. I pick this up regularly from Costco so you can try there if you need to find the current release.

One day I walked in and they instantly gave me a glass of red to guess. It was a 1989 Mouton Rothschild from Magnum. Now how many wine stores/bars in Sydney would that happen at?!? In regards to Coravin, I worked for a restaurant group in London and we had Coravin at a few of them ... remember having a meeting with one of the restaurant managers and we had a glass of 1996 Lynch-Bages and a 2001 d'Yquem over lunch. Hard life!

The big red fruit nose makes promises that aren't delivered on the palate. This is very tight, minty, with a bitter cherry taste reminiscent of some italian reds. I was disappointed by this but I don't think that it's a bad wine - more that it's too young and I have an aversion to bitter young wines.

This isnt a heavy red but it does have a long finish. I'm confident that there are many palates that will enjoy this much more than I did.

If I see a ten year old bottle, I'll buy it.

    Thanks for your tasting note. Totally agree with your views at this point in time. As you can probably tell by my User ID, I am a big fan of this wine and it needs at least 10 years before it begins to shine. I am currently drinking the 1994 vintage which has peaked and drinking beautifully. Hope you can find an older bottle!

Negociants Australia Portfolio Tasting: Lime, kerosene and floral notes. Developing nicely, there is a toasty element to it and good length. I think this is a good checkpoint for this wine, though I think another 5 years wouldn't hurt it badly.

We had a bottle of the 1966 Grange a few years ago and it still had plenty of life in it ... and the 1998 is definitely a step up from this wine.

Hunter Valley Roadtrip 2015: Licorice, earth, floral notes, blackberry and meat. Fantastic balance, the fine tannins provide excellent structure with the fruit power restrained and focused around that core. Should shine with enough time.

In the mouth there is dense black fruit then firm drying but fine textured tannins. Long. Very long in fact. Oh, this is rather nice. Lovely in fact.

Lamb for supper and my hands fell on this in my drinking fridge. Double decanted then left for a brief half hour (I figure it's fully mature so won't need much more than that). On the nose there are aromas of biscuit, leather, very slight brambley fruit, gamey meat, slight oxidation and a certain sourness/volatile acidity note. On the palate the wine is dry with a certain juiciness, the initial impression in the mouth is of slight oxidation then muted sour fruits, spice, drying leather rolls into a furry tannic grip which is joined by some alcohol warmth. The tannin persists on the gums. Hmm. I'm happy this is the last bottle - a touch over the hill for me but still obviously a good quality wine.

3 hour decant. Wonderful nose; picking up leather, spice and mineral notes. Went well with ribeye steaks. Nice dark fruits and some lead pencil. Not much heat to speak of. My only complaint is that after the first glass I noticed it began to fall apart a bit. Will let the other bottles sit for a another year.

Decanted 2 hours prior to consuming. Black fruit, mint, and lots of sage. The finish was medium to long. This would go well with smoked ribs or spicy barbecue. Potential for higher score, but will wait 5 years to open another bottle.

Had purchased from W Wine Boutique thinking it the Amarone styled Gregor, based on the blurb. It wasn't. Still marked down from $130 to $50. Good $50 Aussie Shiraz with a slight green note. Not = to the best Barossa Shiraz. I would like to try the Gregor, however am leery of Paul Hobbs global winemaking!
