2020 Domaine Michel Lafarge BourgognePinot Noir more |
12/10/2023 - Redguy wrote: NRPnp. Quite floral with red berries and light earthy accents to the fore. Cool red berries, earth and spice with a touch of citrus in the mouth. Pure and precise, guided by an unexpected level of freshness and acid considering the vintage. Nice structure as well, but not dominated by such - bares more than a slight resemblance to a Volnay. Should have no problem developing for 7 -10+ years but drinks well now. |

12/10/2023 - Redguy wrote: NRDecanted 1hr. Showed more smoky wood and tannic grip than I'd expect from a wine at this level. Fruit seemed maybe a touch roasted as well. This felt more like a vin de garde (fruit notwithstanding) which is not what I'm looking for in second label juice. To my palate this needs mid-term cellaring at least. Not really sure why at this level. |

2022 Robert Goulley Bourgogne BlancChardonnay more |
11/10/2023 - Redguy wrote: NRWhile not overly fine or incisive, or one for the cellar, this poised, medium bodied Bourgogne offers a tasty blend of citrus and pear on a seashell and stony base. Good freshness, this leaves behind that lingering kiss of salty sea breeze that I find so compelling. Equally good with or without food, this is a simple, easy-drinking BB at a very good price. A good choice for a house white. |

2013 Domaine Pavelot (Jean-Marc et Hugues) Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les PeuilletsPinot Noir more |
10/31/2023 - Redguy wrote: NRPopped, poured, and followed over the course of an hour, this bottle was at the beginning of transitioning to maturity. The palate was seamless and well-integrated, while secondaries and tertiaries were just starting to move to the fore. While reticent on first pop, this opened up nicely over the course of an hour. Lovely now with air, this bottle was nowhere near peak. That CT drinking window from '18-'22 is way off (and ridiculous assuming proper storage) - these classically-styled Pavelot 1ers are built for the patient pinotsman. Now through '30 seems reasonable. |

10/25/2023 - Redguy wrote: NRShows an unmistakable sense of regional typicity for around $20, but with a bit more depth and backbone than your basic Langhe designation. Better than expected, but maybe it shouldn't be considering the vintage. Will make an excellent cellar defender. |

2022 la cabassonne BandolMourvèdre Blend, Mourvèdre more |
9/22/2023 - Redguy wrote: NRI'm a little conflicted here. This retains an unmistakable sense of place with dense fruit flavors, though on the riper, more tropical side, of papaya, guava, and some banana and copper penny on the finish with a glycerin mouthfeel. My nits lie with that mouthfeel - the alcohol is pronounced and definitely sticks out. I knew coming from Bandol (and Le Galantin at that) this was going to be on the rounder, more lush side of rosé but this is pushing the envelope. It should settle down a bit with a few months in the cellar, but clearly the alcohol isn't going anywhere. Higher acidity and a little more restraint (fruit picked with lower brix?) would have seemed more prudent. But who knows, maybe by the next bottle I’ll feel differently. All in all, this was tasty and enjoyable (clearly better with food) even if it painted outside the lines. Maybe just think of it as a winter rosé. |

9/20/2023 - Redguy wrote: NRBurnished by age, this showed a mature profile of baked apples with lime and petrol accents, with some more tropical notes settling on the finish. This bottle was drinking beautifully, spherical and light with the perfect kiss of acid. This went down soooo easy. |

9/13/2023 - Redguy wrote: NRFirst bottle of three cellared since release, splash decanted and tasted over 1.5 hours. Wow, I expected to like this but I didn’t expect something this seamless, open, and delicious. Broad-shouldered but plush, this saturates the palate with waves flavor - brambly blueberry and blackberry, licorice, white pepper, smoke, and faint briny notes on a soft tannic base. There’s very good depth and solid structure but it’s a relaxed and reserved style of muscle – more confident than forceful if that makes sense. It wraps up with a secondary burst of power on a relatively long lingering finish that kept me coming back for more. This should remain open throughout its life and gain some additional nuance along the way. Really nice stuff, and for the price, right up my alley. |

9/13/2023 - Redguy wrote: NRFully integrated and open, this shows some modest Graves character with plum and cassis type fruit on a rocky/earthy bed. It's medium- bodied and mature at this point. Basically a straightforward easy-drinking weekday bottle of Bordeaux. My last of 8 bottles cellared since release. |

8/10/2023 - Redguy wrote: NR(Ultra?) Modern wine making here for sure. Polished medium/medium+ weight offering with a dark dusty red fruit and oak profile that suggests a Bordeaux blend from somewhere, but not evocative of Pessac at all. Soft and polished to the point of being varietally neutered - I would be hard pressed to guess the blend or origins double blind: Malbec from Argentina? Blend from Napa? WA? Paso? Bordeaux? Decent wine but four-square and unmemorable. |

5/25/2022 - Redguy wrote: NRVery ripe (bordering on overripe) profile with lumbering black and red fruit and a bit of soil. Has some substantial weight and density to it... honestly, this was more of a non-descript fruit smoothie than I expected. The wife's first thought was Kool Aid, mine was more plum/berry Slurpee. Not our jam, and we dumped the last half of the bottle. |

3/3/2022 - Redguy wrote: NRA nicely balanced wine, and pretty for the style, but the prominent wood, low acidity and rich candied fruit are not what I'm looking for in a Chard. For fans of the style I can see the appeal and this should prove a good value. |

3/3/2022 - Redguy wrote: NRWe very much enjoyed the whites from the Azores on our visit a few years ago. This bottle did nothing to tarnish that memory. Bright and incisive with a lemon and green apple profile on a stony minerality base that's propelled by bright acids. Equally at home with a meal or quaffing on the patio, this strikes a nice balance between energy and substance. |

This starts off bright and citrusy before transitioning to a softer braised pear and liquid stone type mid-palate and finishes with a zippy, acid-infused saline wash with lingering pear/grapefruit flavors. 2/22/2022 - Redguy wrote: NRRed fruit and Fall leaves with a flashy, forward style that was reminiscent of a lighter Santa Rita Hills pinot. Oddly, this refused to fan out across the plate and felt partially closed. Better on day 2, though still not as generous as I'd hope. |

Medium/full body, medium tannins, good acidity, and a supple, moderately polished mouthfeel. 2/11/2022 - Redguy wrote: NRFrom memory: Bright and lively on the palate with a lemon & green apple/lime fruit profile (a little non-sweet Sprite, in a good way), oyster shell minerality, leesy richness and bright acidity that lent a slight effervescent sensation. The wine was reminiscent, at least on this night, to a slightly weightier Vinho Verde. Very refreshing and would buy again. |
