Terrific. Quaffable. Mature, deep cornas drinking beautifully. Dark smoky fruits and decent length. Supposedly past it's "prime." Hard disagree. Not appreciating it's loud youth, I sadly didn't pick up any more. If I had these would be on my list to serve to company.

Could this little Chablis survive over a decade? Yes, yes indeed it can. Gone is the harshness of the bottles we drank in 2014 and 2015, replaced by a nice refreshing thirst quencher that cuts fat and salt beautifully. I really expected sherry or vinegar but no oxidation to be found here. What a pleasant surprise!

Best vintage of this wine I have ever tried (I have 2005-2014 in the cellar). In fact one of the best whites I have ever had period. Not a 100 pointer because I need somewhere to go if it drinks better after a few years. That being said this was an incredible bottle showing perfect balance, elegance, complexity and length. Mind numbingly brilliant.
2011 is just a superb year for rhone whites.

Popped and poured from a magnum drinking perfectly in 2016. Tiniest bit of brett blew off immediately. Really surprised how well this showed after 15 years, staying lively for the entire 4 hour dinner and even with pleasant not tired leftover the next day.

Perfectly ready to drink. After a flawed bottle this one was terrific considering the vintage. Typical pialade, very light red, very aromatic but this time with a persistent whiff of brett that did not put us off.

1997 Château Rayas Côtes du Rhône Blanc Château de Fonsalette Reserve

White Rhone Blend more

10/21/2014 - Matsutake Likes this wine: 94 points

Bottle purchased as part of an aged lot of Rayas, Pignan and Fonsalette. Provenance was direct from Fonsalette (Rayas); could not possibly be better.

We were quite worried this '97 Fonsalette blanc would tired and old, but not at all. The first sip was a shock (in a good way).

Stone fruit and citrus, possibly meyer lemon or citron, was still present on open and for a good hour+. Nice acidity backed up a bold nose. Past the hour and a half mark in the glass, more secondary characteristics showed, apple and barely there oxidation, but with zero loss of length.

The wine remained full bodied and incredibly long throughout.
I have no doubt provenance had something to do with this exceptional showing, but it reinforces my suspicions that Rayas's non-CDP wines are more worthy of aging than is commonly recommended.

Having said this, we will be drinking my other 2 bottles in the next 12 months.

We opened our first bottle within a month of arrival from Garagiste and universally hated it. The better half refused it after a single sip. It was muted and dull, cloudy and short. I hoped for post-travel settling, but after a year of going through 3 more of the six pack, we were just happy our mistake had not been a very expensive one.

The last couple bottles have been sitting.
Some you have written that you forgot about them.
No such luck, I knew they were there, lurking.

We gave in last night and opened the second to last bottle. And, surprise, it really wasn't that bad. We drank it over the course of 2 days, and it stayed, pretty decent. Nice earthy tones, with a bare little bit of fruit peeking underneath.

Actually, on second thought, this was pretty good for sub-$14. The better half gave it thumbs up, and asked for more. Huh.

Some folks are saying drink up. I say, given how well it held up on day 2 (in fridge, no cork overnight), it can hold for another year, maybe.

Condrieu in off years is on. This 2008 is still fresh and crisp, all the while holding onto classic Condrieu notes. Great for eats. One of my favorite wines of the year; and easily my favorite 2008 from the Rhone. Am revising the drink by date forward as this shows no sign of giving up the ghost.

Rosé

2011 Château Mourgues du Gres Costières-de-Nîmes Galets Rosés

Red Rhone Blend more

6/3/2014 - Matsutake Likes this wine: 88 points

Mourgues du Gres makes our favorite roses. Certainly not austere, as seems to be the fashion with some roses(basically rendering them cheap white wine colored pink). These clearly have a good fruitiness to them, typical red berry flavors (straw, rasp, etc.) that we expect from a rose, balanced with nice acid. Terrific summer sipping that also pairs well with a summer meal. This one drank well in summer 2014, but I would not have kept it for another year.

Yes, it is a bit bretty on first open. However, after decanting and given enough air this wine shines: nice on the palate, typical southern rhone happily lacking over the top fruity/jammy-nesses. It really just needs a couple hours to blow off the brett.

Kept 1/2 bottle in decanter open in the fridge.
It was best on day 2 and 3.
I wish I had bought more.

Port. After several consecutive flawed examples, this is clearly a buyer beware wine/vintage mix. Our first bottle was incredible (sourced from a retailer in the Rhone whose source is the Chateau). Yet all the subsequent acquisitions purchased in the US have been flawed.

11/28/2013 - Matsutake wrote: 94 points

Opened too cold. Improved after 30 minutes of air and heat. Deep golden color as expected at this maturity. Nose was a bit restrained (served in Zalto white glasses not flutes). Palate was a bit oxidative when cold, but with some heat it turned plump and long, complicated by some remaining acid. Tiny, tiny bubbles alive and well and piquant. And a little bitterness hidden in the finish of the last glass.

Pinot dominance clearly stood out. Full, rich, long, powerful as other have noted. Also as others have noted the nose does not do justice to the palate. Possibly we should have let it open up a bit instead of just pop-n-inhale? Quite unique and most certainly worth the neurons.
