4/22/2024 - drwine2001 wrote: NRDisgorged February, 2023. 100% Cramant fruit, 2 grams. Yellow, tight bead. Faint honey and hay. Medium bodied. Although the attack is deceptively sweet, the mid-palate and finish are dry. More herbal than fruit flavors. Good acidity, fine moderately long, earthy finish, but the problem here is lack of intensity and impact. |

Medium weight. Excellent ripe fruit on the entry followed by a dry, chalky soil finish and terrific acidity. Good flesh atop the structure and long, persistent finish. For me the best of 4 wines tasted here. |

4/22/2024 - drwine2001 wrote: NR80% 2020, 20% 2019 with a 50/50 blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. 1.6 grams dosage. Full yellow with a deeper touch of brown, transient bubbles. Open pear and citrus aromas with some oak toast. Broad and concentrated, more dark red fruit flavors than I expected after smelling it. Good framing acidity, not much minerality. Good, very accessible entry level Champagne but nothing special. |

4/21/2024 - drwine2001 wrote: NRAn Expansive Tasting at Hugel (Riquewihr, France): 212 grams. Golden amber. Fragrant botrytis and honey. Full bodied. Intense essence of apricot. Very sweet, unctuous entry but enlivened by excellent acidity. Incredible length and wonderful balance. As opposed to the Riesling SGN, this is most definitely a hedonistic treat which probably be served by the thimbles rather than glasses! A fantastic finish to an incredible tasting. |

4/21/2024 - drwine2001 wrote: NRAn Expansive Tasting at Hugel (Riquewihr, France): 148 grams. Deep yellow/light gold. Honey and even a bit of chocolate on the nose. Fantastic, explosive bright peach in the mouth. Less soil, but excellent acidity and verve that make it taste far less sweet for this level of residual sugar. Great length. Not a decadent dessert wine. I loved this and its structure should make it pretty much immortal. |

4/21/2024 - drwine2001 wrote: NRAn Expansive Tasting at Hugel (Riquewihr, France): 48 grams. Deep yellow. Petrol and herbs-smells like a dry wine. Medium+ body. Delicious ripe stone fruit that is not that sweet. Great soil and acidity. Elegant, relatively dry, and lemony. Unusually structured Vendange Tardive wine. |

4/21/2024 - drwine2001 wrote: NRAn Expansive Tasting at Hugel (Riquewihr, France): This was served blind from a half empty Coravined bottle. I don’t know when it was first opened. Light golden. Licorice and herbal scents. No oxidation. Dry, layered, and very textural. By default, I guessed Pinot Gris from the early 2000’s. Although I have tasted 1976 late harvest Hugel Pinot Gris, I had never had a dry one with this sort of age, and I was amazed by its freshness. Alsatian Pinot Gris can have incredible mouth feel, but with aging, I think the Rieslings retain much more flavor interest. |

4/21/2024 - drwine2001 wrote: NRAn Expansive Tasting at Hugel (Riquewihr, France): Deep yellow. Less floral and more honeyed compared to the 2019 Estate. Medium to full bodied with a silky, seamless feel that is rich but not heavy. Orange zest, pineapple, and excellent tart acidity. Delicious, long, and so well balanced for Gewurztraminer, easily handling its 94 grams of sugar. Hugel does an amazing job with this type of wine, and I say this as a skeptic when it comes to this varietal. |

4/21/2024 - drwine2001 wrote: NRAn Expansive Tasting at Hugel (Riquewihr, France): Medium yellow. Typical high toned floral aromas that bump up against my tolerance for these components. Medium weight, glycerine but not oily. Sweet citrus entry, average acidity, and back end soil and cyanic bite. This comes across as harsh and not perfectly balanced despite its 14 grams of sugar. |

4/21/2024 - drwine2001 wrote: NRAn Expansive Tasting at Hugel (Riquewihr, France): Slightly deeper yellow. Lowed toned bruised red apple on the nose. Medium weight, rich feel, stronger oak imprint. Sweeter, richer, and creamier than the 2021 Estate but less soil and acidity. I preferred the former less expensive wine for its leaner style and greater sense of terroir. |

4/21/2024 - drwine2001 wrote: NRAn Expansive Tasting at Hugel (Riquewihr, France): Yellow. Butter and grilled apple. Medium to lighter weight. Off dry. Nice texture imparted by discrete oak, excellent acidity, and more soil than fruit, which makes this far more interesting than most Alsatian Pinot Gris I’ve tried. Surprisingly excellent. |

This bottle had impure aromas (probably open for a few days) but was just as impressive on the palate. After the Classic Riesling, obviously deeper, larger scaled, and lower pitched. Intense dry peach fruit, outstanding lemony acidity, terrific balance of fruit and soil throughout. Classic. |

4/21/2024 - drwine2001 wrote: NRRuby. Striking nose that my wife described as an herb sachet, and that captured it perfectly-thyme, oregano, lavender, licorice, and lord knows what else. With time, rising black cherry as well. Medium bodied. Ripe dark red fruit, the abundant herbs that are previewed in the nose, tart acidity, strong core of minerality, ripe tannins, and a long finish. Not only was this delicious, it effortlessly accompanied a wide range of food that contained spring ingredients such as asparagus, artichoke, peas, and morels. I had this about 5 years ago, and it has only deepened while retaining its freshness and complexity. I was thrilled to find it and drink another bottle. Abbatucci is seriously underrated and produces world class wines. |

4/21/2024 - drwine2001 wrote: NRDeep tulip color, transient mousse. Some sherry right out of the bottle alongside yellow apple, hay, herbs, and churned butter. The oxidative note quickly recedes but returns after a couple of hours. Full, incredibly creamy and lactic. Not entirely dry. Exhilarating bitter citrus, excellent acidity, and stone with great persistence. While this drank incredibly fresh for its age, I would approach any extant bottles earlier rather than later. “Grand Cru Burgundy with bubbles” fits this wine to a tee. |
