I brought this to Etta's for dinner with Suzi (mini-crabcakes followed by the spice-rubbed salmon & cornbread pudding). On opening it was dark, brooding and tannic unlike almost any Pinot I have ever tasted. A bit of barnyard seems evident. At first it showed loads of tannin and acid, but the fruit was hiding. With time in the glass (NOTE: Etta's has *really* crappy restaurant glasses. Will Tom Douglas restaurants drive me to BYO glasses?) it starts to open up and expand, lengthening on the palate. Finally by the time the salmon entrees arrived we were dealing with pure MAGIC! The acid gets along SOOOO well with the fat of the salmon, the finish showing power and grace. Deep cherry, powerful and intense on the palate yet very smooth.

One troubing sign is that the finish seemed to tighten up by the end of the meal, but I also think that had to do with a clash with the sweet creme brulee dessert. Gorgeous bottle!

Mmm, lifted, bright, floral nose. The palate is spicy and sleek, "cinnamon red hots" to steal a descriptor from Justin. This does have a very high acid profile and is lean, racy, not an easy wine, and really wants food. Now for me, everything I just wrote is a positive. This is tasty stuff! I will say that when I revisited this there was a bit of a odd lactic note, not off-putting but hard to place.
NOTE: this was a Daily Drinkers selection courtesy of Justin Wells.

All American Chardonnay Tasting (New Jersey, USA): Wow, what a wonderful wine! 5 out of the 10 attendees, including me (all but one of the real wine "aficionados" in the group) called this as the wine of the night! So perfectly balanced. Light lemon yellow with a tinge of green. Beautiful nose of fresh cut white flowers, white peach, pear, and lemony citrus. Palate reflects the nose with an herbal undertone. Superb balance and absolute seamlessness across every aspect of the wine. Delicious, complex and long on the finish. Still very youthful and with tremendous upside, but gorgeous tonight!

Blind tasting European whites (Taylor's wines, Alexandria): Served Blind
Herbaceous, stalky almost, quite green and ashy over waxy citrus. Medium plus of acidity, plenty of grip, quite citrus and green apple sharpness on the palate as well. Less green in the mouth and it starts to show more generous with time and agitation
French and Sem Sav Blanc blend with the latter the dominant component

Utterly perfect cork. Long, dark dime on the bottom, not one iota of staining up the side. Perfect storage.

Somewhat disappointing. Heavy sediment. Lots of dried fruit, fig and raisin. No signs of oxidation but very mature overall. Was hoping for a lot more on this one as it aged.

Gorgeous. Red and black fruit. Smoke and perfume. Silk and violets. Intensely aromatic, very fine, subtle tannins. An expression of Syrah that is simultaneously rich and ethereal. Impressive.

5/26/2023 9:23:00 PM - Nothing really compares to Jamet in terms of the sheer, raw, bloody, just perfectly animal expression of Côte-Rôtie. I have only had a couple of Levet, and they are wonderful, more "coloring inside the lines." Just utterly proper.

This Jean-Michel Stephan was much more subtle, silky, more red fruit, more Burgundian, just a really unique expression.

Opening the first bottle out of an unopened case purchased on release 20 years ago. This is supposed to be the wine dream. I hope it’s good. I don’t find myself drinking as much Bordeaux lately.

Jeff Leve wrote a “drink up” note which made me go “oh shit…”

But this thing is just warming up. Tons of fruit. Plenty of tannin. Very deep and pretty. Great aromatics. It’s a baby still.

Smoke, tobacco, truffle, just explosive on the nose. Fine, fine tannins on a palate that still drips with gorgeous and lithe fruit. Cherry and chocolate. So pure and pretty. Wonderfully long and mineral on the finish.

Fantastic!

Better on the nose with its truffle, black cherry and chocolate bouquet than on the vibrant, plum, black cherry, earth, spice and coffee bean palate. Soft in texture, but the burgeoning brightness, firmness and spearmint notes detracts a bit from the hoped for opulence in the finish. The wine is dropping fruit. So if you own any, it’s time to drink up as it’s only going to continue fading from here. Drink from 2023-2028.

Haut-Brion and Margaux courtesy of Mark Taylor; 3/18/2023-3/19/2023 (Atlanta, GA): Super closed, some tobacco. Hot vintage with a whiff of alcohol showing at first? Coffee, midweight, firm, nothing sexy, just HB straight down the fairway.

My #6 and the group #2. Guessed as 2002.

  • Comment posted by Eric:

3/19/2023 10:12:00 AM - My impressions on this one are a bit contradictory. I recall definitely noticing a little alcohol at first, but it became less noticeable. Mostly the wine was just very, very closed for me. Although the group as a whole (2 dozen tasters) really liked it a great deal. It just never spoke to me. I guessed 2002 in the end, less because of the alcohol, but having never tasted 2002 and knowing the reputation of that vintage as "classic but understated" thought that perhaps this might be that. Once the vintage was revealed, I think the core issue was that the wine was just quite closed.

BTW, the actual 2002 was very lovely!

Now I’m biased because Shafer HSS and Sunspot are my favourite wines. I’ve tasted a lot of wine since I started in 1993 and this could be the finest I have ever had. Still looks dark and brooding in the glass. Huge nose on opening this magnum. Lots of cedar and baking chocolate wafts from the glass. Melted liquorice and red fruit compote follow on the bouquet. Lovely mouthfeel almost hedonistic in texture, I probably only smelt for the first 20 minutes. Monumental in the mouth as black and red dessert fruits explode. Turns quickly to a flinty and cigar like older world taste style. The wine initially tricked me into believing it was younger than it was, quickly hitting me with its classic personality. Brilliant meshing if constituents into equilibrium like Picasso would do. This was more an experience than a glass of wine. Bravo!

3/18/2023 6:57:00 AM - Just had this wine at a tasting last night, and I totally agree. It really is quite fantastic, as quintessential an example of Napa Cab as I can think of. Super purity and intensity but not at all heavy.
