2/5/2023 - Capt Cutlass Does not like this wine: NR

Blind tasted. Blackberry and other forest fruits. Fine and mineral palate, tight with clamping tannins. Oak in evidence. Guessed a Cab Franc from the Loire. Too dry and lacking texture for me. A cool vintage in the Languedoc. Hopefully, it needs more time or maybe it just wasn’t ripe enough that year...

After Thevenet 07 and 08. Not decanted but left in the glass half an hour. Nose leather and red/black fruit. Lovely fresh acidity but beautiful balance. Tannins not obtrusive but holding it all together. Lovely. Maybe another year or two. After half an hour in the glass the acidity fades. Understandable but loss of charm. Still good though

Finally opened the first of three and won't sit on the next two. IMO, fully mature. The cork looked brand new, did it's job perfectly. Deep red, with an amber rim. Black and dark red berries, dark plums, anise, garrigue, leather, thyme. Soft. It did throw a lot of sediment. Really nice.

This is a bit like making stew. The acidity bubbles underneath the fat of this wine. Trying to break through but can’t yet. The aroma is heady zinnias. You can taste the beginnings of fruits but they too are pressed up against the glass trying to get your attention. It gets a bit better after 30 minutes there’s a bit more clarity. This needs time to integrate.

I'm surprised at all the positive notes. I was promised great things for this and this bottle was very disappointing. Thin, sharply acidic, not a lot of fruit and no length. Vinegary strawberries with a farmyard element. Unpleasant.
I tasted it when opened, decanted and kept struggling on tasting at intervals for 5 hours with no improvement.

Deep ruby in colour! Nearly purple! Pop and pour! This is amazing! Nose of strong black currant flavor an a hint of red fruits in between! After breathing for twenty minutes, it slowly becoming more mineral but still very dark fruits driven! Smooth thick palate, almost meaty texture! Mouthful of dark fruits, minerals and a little bubble gum finish! Very impressive if I'm honest! Again from a remarkable vintage in the Bordeaux region! Singing right now but still can keep for another five years very very easily or possibly longer!

I have not liked most all the Bordeaux wines I have consumed, although relative to other wines I haven't many of them and none have been high on the classification list. But I bought a case of 2005s to give them a try as the folks at K&L (and many other places) raved about them. Well, now after a few years of aging I can now say that I'm a fan. Although not from a top-notch chateau, this wine has the fruit of a mellow CA Cab yet the complexity and "good funk" that I was looking for.

  • Comment posted by johneagle:

6/22/2014 7:50:00 AM - It is precisely the CA Cab aspect that made me sell this wine. I have nothing against California wine, but I bought this expecting a Bordeaux character, which is completely missing. If I had wanted California I would have bought some, not this. Very sad that a well made wine in the past has gone to become so characterless.
