2/27/2016 - JOJ wrote: 95 pointsThis was one of my favorite pinots in a long time. On the nose, pomegranate, strawberry, baking spice, wet rock and white flower. Beguiling! On the palate, pomegranate, cherry, cranberry and citrus, with a note of bubblegum and a hint of something savory. Silky tannin and velvety mouthfeel. A sensual wine, and likely to improve with age. |

Nose is a melange of red and black fruit, with notes of roasting meat, smoke, pie crust and a touch of citrus. Interesting! On the palate, raspberry and blackberry with a spicy finish. Very well balanced. Like a cross between a zin, syrah, and pinot. Fabulous.

12/6/2014 - oldwines Likes this wine: 97 pointsA simply Gorgeous bottle of wine. Decanted at 5:30 pm and poured back into the cleaned bottle for dinner at a local restaurant at 6:45 and drunk from about 7:30 to 11:30. Medium dark garnet color with little obvious age. The nose exploded with tar, chocolate, earth, grilled mushroom, cassis and black cherry, Very complex and layered. Feminine yet hearty and rich. I could just smell it for hours. Great mouth feel. Palate is rich reflecting the nose but with a bit of eucalyptus and emphasizing the chocolate and dark fruit as well as a touch of leather. Long aftertaste lasting almost a minute. Great pairing with braised Bison short ribs and blue cheese bread pudding. Superb, but unfortunately my last bottle. There is something special about the Cali Cabs from the 1980's made by the early innovators from the 60's and early 70's. They have aged magnificently and are in my view as good as anything produced in the world in that period. Jordan, Montelena, Diamond Creek, Silver Oak, Mondavi Reserve, Heitz Martha's, Ridge Monte Bello, Spottswoode and Caymus Special Selection come to mind from that era and stand head and shoulders above the current cult fruit and alcohol bombs that professional reviewers give ridiculously high scores to in my view.

On the nose, prominent dill, with notes of currant, earth and dried flowers. Delicate and perfumed. Still amazingly vibrant and fresh on the palate -- loads of red fruit -- dried cranberry, cherry, raspberry -- with hints of spice and tobacco. Slides across the palate, with nice acidity that pairs well with heartier foods. A lot of length for such an old wine. I'm left nearly speechless by this exceptional example of a 29 year old California Cabernet. An amazing feat of wine-making, particularly considering that nearly 100,000 cases of this wine were produced.

4/4/2014 - fingers Likes this wine: 93 pointsCompletely asleep for the first hour and then the show began. Dusty ruby color, about 80% saturated with very slow, clear and wide legs. Light sediment. All the great Cab elements I love are in the nose, but it's still on the shy side of captivating. However, the palate is ranking full-stop. Rich fruits and acids with, what seems like to me, perfect tannic response. Delicious and clean. Not long on persistence but great on being a guilt-free experience ($-wise) with a lot of promise ahead. 5+12+18+8 = 93

This bottle opened with a strong whiff of alcohol, which remained even after a two-hour decant. Underneath the alcohol was a one-dimensional note of stewed cherry. More stewed cherry on the palate, with some blackberry and more alcohol heat. Just a one trick pony. Age is not treating the KB appellation wines well. I fear for my stash of the SVDs . . . .
