The nose is honestly frighteningly disgusting. John Gilman (View from the Cellar) seems to be the only reviewer, pro or amateur, who sees this the way I do, and this wine is MASSIVELY overripe. He uses fancier words to describe it, but it has to be one of the worst wines I have encountered as it combines the course & unrestrained fruit with inelegant tannins. This being said, clearly some people like this.

Couldn't resist to pop another bottle. At this stage it is still dense and tight and will need a few more years to fully open up but what a promise.

Tried this in a wine bar after 6 red wines, which might have blurred my palate.

Anyway, this stroke me as off-balance, unfocussed and also with pronounced volatile acid problems. So no thumbs up there.

10/13/2016 4:22:00 PM - The Von Winning estate is one of the founding members of the VDP with a very long tradition. The estate is located is in Deidesheim in the Pfalz (which is south of Rheinhessen) and has very little in common with a raising star in an underappreciated wine region.

The Rieslings in the Pfalz are typically less opulent in style compared to the ones in Rheinhessen. 2014 wasn't the warmest vintage either. "Kalkofen" means "Lime-Oven". The vines grow on limestone and marl soils with high ph-value. Therefore, the grapes and ultimately the wines retain a high acidity. Drinking these GG's after two years of bottle age only doesn't give them the chance to shine. Maybe you would have liked the wine at a different occasion in 5-10 years from now. Unfortunately, only a few wine bars take the time (and extra costs) to store these wines properly and then serve when the time is right.

3/3/2017 12:25:00 PM - Thanks for your comment. Sure, being member of the VDP is by no means a guarantee for quality. However, I 've many GG which I only started to enjoy with some age. Time will tell. I have some bottles in my cellar. Maybe we'll have the chance to follow up on this wine in 2020-2025. Let me know when you are in Zurich so we can try together :-)

Text book douro. Lovely blueberry, floral aromas with some coffee and spice. Well balanced with fresh acidity.

7/24/2016 4:14:00 PM - Indeed a great value for money. Probably best drunk when young. I had some older Douro wines recently (10-15 years old) and none of them was really convincing compared to the younger Douro wines on the table.

WOW! My first time tasting a wine from this producer, and it's a stunner. Inky in color, with massive blast of black licorice, black raspberries, cherry liqueur, spice, earth, jam and fresh black pepper. This is no shy wallflower of a wine. It's powerful, concentrated, mouth coating and intense. The finish just keeps on going. There is so much fruit, you lose track of how long this wine really is.

10/4/2015 3:58:00 AM - Thanks for your note on the la ferme du mont cote capelanes. My last bottle was slightly closed and needed 24 hours to come to live. As a consequence, I was a bit hesitant opening them now. Your note tells me that it is probably a good time to pull a cork on one. How long did you decant?

  • Comment posted by Doni.Bertolami:

10/4/2015 2:30:00 PM - Thanks for your answer, Jeff. I also have a tendency to drink my wines young. Especially these young cndp are a real treat in their youth before they shut down. My last bottle of the ferme du mont was formerly exploding after 24 hours aeration. No signs of getting tired with aeration. The breathing really lifted this to a next level in terms of vibrancy and complexity. But I well agree that this is rather an exception.

The 2010 la ferme du mont cotes capelanes is one of my all time favorites cndp. I'm glad you like this too. I bought some bordeaux 2014 inspired by your primeur notes here on CT - good to know that our palates are not too far away from each other :)

10/6/2015 1:00:00 PM - I'm looking forward to receiving them. Meyney has a great qpr. I liked it in 2009 already. People say that the Calon is slightly different from what one would expect. The Calon ranked very high on the list of a friend of mine (together with Leoville Las Cases). I'm curious to taste it myself.

8/10/2015 1:16:00 AM - I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one putting a high score on the table. This is indeed a spectacular pinot and one of my favorite wines in terms of drinking pleasure. It will be interesting to see this develop with time. A friend of mine was recently attending a vertical tasting and he said that the 2012 was the best vintage in the line up. The dog point pinots can easily age 10+ years. I'm glad I have enough in my cellar :-)

  • Comment posted by Doni.Bertolami:

8/10/2015 1:08:00 AM - I've just informed myself on the internet. Sounds like a real cool gadget. The only downside is the relative high costs for the argon gas cartridges. Maybe there will be a cheaper alternative from another producer out soon. Then again, another 66 cents per glass is not too bad considering that you will no longer open bottles which are in a dumb phase or pour away oxidized wine when you were not able to finish the bottle in reasonable time.

Regular dinner group (By Me @ van der Dussen): This wine really performed perfectly this afternoon! A luxurious and complex, mature bouquet with good cassis and other dark fruits, cedar, cigar box, graphite and a pleasant touch of barnyard. All comes back on the palate with beautiful acidity and soft tannin with still a lovely bite. A great and luxurious wine at its absolute peak now and there is no real hurry. It will stay on this level for a few more years. Just beautiful now.

Had this together with the 2012 Boekenhoutskloof Syrah, and this wasn't nearly as good. Even though this is of high quality, there is this note of smoky ashes that ruins the party for me.

Intense nose with lots of smoke, ash tray, something green and something perfumed (Nivea soap) together with greasy oak in the form of coconut fat and dill.

Medium+ acidity, dry with some tannins and a medium+ body. Medium+ to high intensity and a medium+ finish.

Can't stand the nose, but the wine is very well made and very polished.

  • Comment posted by Doni.Bertolami:

4/1/2015 9:33:00 AM - Just read your comment. Usually this smoky component (which too many SA Shiraz' have) also destroys the party for me. Two years ago I did not notice it as a dominant factor in this wine. Reading your note really concerns me since I still have 4 bottles left in my cellar. I also liked the 2012 vintage of this wine. 2009 was good as well.

Wow. This is really astonishing. The inviting nose offers notes of caramell, incense, vanilla, pepper, blueberries, violets, cream, tar, short-leaf pine, resin and baconfat. On the palate there's a perfect balance. The purity of the fruit is overwhelming. The tannins are polished and of great quality. This is fantastic now and will be even better in a few years down the road.

8/7/2014 12:41:00 AM - Hi Vintage. In my opinion you can't have enough bottles of the 2010 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie in your cellar. If you buy them now I'd strongly recommend to open one or two bottles in it's youth. The wine has not closed down yet (don't know whether it will at some point in time) and is absolutely spectacular. I can't make the comparison to the 2010 Guigal Chateau d'Ampuis since I have not drunken it yet. I hope this helps. Let me know how you liked the Jamet. Cheers.

Tend to agree with mcases. This wine is very sweet and artificial. Besides its graphite taste there's not much expression of the terroir. The strong influence of the winemaker is very obvious. Seems constructed. For sure drinkable but there are better choices in priorat for this price point. Don't understand why the Wine Advocate scores it a 96. Maybe it will improve with additional cellaring. That is what I will do with the rest of my bottles. I quite liked the 2006 vintage of this wine which is kind of burgundian in style. This here has little to do with purity, elegance and terroir.
