2007 Renato Ratti Barolo Conca

Nebbiolo more

5/28/2015 - Wine-Strategies wrote: NR

An utter disappointment in that it didn't speak Nebbiolo to me, nor did it speak Langhe. Muddled red fruits, with all too brief moments of floral perfume. Instead, (over) ripe berries, and a full mouth-feel. This is (more akin to) a cocktail wine, not something I want when reaching for a wine from Barolo region. I've saved 1/3 of the bottle, and will revisit on the second day, with updates if this somehow manages to redeem itself. Tasting this wine four years after its release is like running into the High School quarterback at the 25yr reunion to find he's 150lbs overweight with a face so red it's the color of a Christmas stocking, and remarking to yourself that 'he's really let himself go'. 15,0% abv.

Aerated to decanter 1 hr, served non-blind at cellar temp.

Considering the producer, vineyard, and price, an ultimately disappointing drinking experience. Medium bodied with a straightforward, somewhat restrained, and surprisingly maturing/mature profile of red fruit and exotic spice notes. Seemingly resolved with a truncated finish. Not obviously flawed (purchased on release from the winery, so provenance/storage is not an issue), just not very exciting, and not offering the complexity, dimensions, vibrancy, length, or distinctiveness of the better examples of this producer/vineyard combination. In the 87-88 point range for this bottle.

4/21/2015 - texanoblues Likes this wine: 94 points

Deep-red/violet in the glass, with inky-black center. Lovely, floral nose with prominent blackberry, spice, vanilla, and ink notes. Blackberry, mint and anise on the palate. Intense and concentrated without any jammy or syrupy detractors. Vibrant acidity and nicely tannic. At 14%, the alcohol was right where it should be. Long blackberry, vanilla finish. There were present some earthy, forest floor undertones that added to the complexity of this wine. Also, some barely detectable herbaceous notes (from the Cabernet Sauvignon).

This was a really wonderful bottle. Concentrated, intense, and complex with exceptionally pleasing notes, supported by firm, lively structure. As big as this wine was, it never felt heavy, "hedonisitic", jammy, or syrupy. I think that Brancaia really hit the nail on the head with 40% CabernetSuvgnon / 40% PetitVerdot / 20% Cabernet Franc blend. I'll be buying more .......

Decanted for an hour, which was a definite plus. This pinot is very reminiscent of Black Kite pinots in that at it reminds me of a pinot on steroids. Showing lots of nice black fruit on the nose, and big rich flavors that are enjoyable to drink. The balance isn't quite what I would have expected for what is Black Kite's pinnacle of pinot's in Angel Hawk Reserve. The heat was showing through a little too much on the back, but for one who likes the big bold pinot this is for you. Clearly very well made, fun to drink, and full of flavor; it just does not have the typicity of an elegant pinot.

This is number 8 out of a case; sadly, they've all performed pretty much the same - poorly. It's as if there's a blanket of some type on top of the fruit. I mean, it wants to be pretty, but this damn blanket just suffocates the parts that I'm looking for. A muddled table wine that does not appear to have any real future. Some brett is always in the background as if to add insult to injury. I seriously doubt the producer intended for it to show like this; thinking it was a storage/shipping issue at some point between the Langhe and here in CO. 14,5% abv

This wine continues to impress. On the back half of a case purchase from a year ago, and while I've noticed some bottle variation, it comes down to some bottles needing more aeration than others before they're showing their best. Tonight's bottle was Audozed for 2 hours, and was in excellent form from the moment it hit the glass. The essence of complex soil, strawberry and pomegranate on the nose, with a silken texture and great lift. A truly outstanding wine and one of the best QPRs out there. 14,5% abv. highly recommended

Served non-blind.

So it was a mistake to pop and pour this a couple nights ago. It was good but tannic and a little confused. Wife and I both enjoyed it but very average and hidden. Fast forward to tonight. Whoa! Softened very nicely and really pulled together. Beautiful wine that would have been best served by another 5 in the cellar....or maybe more. Red raspberry, cherry, plum, blackberry. Well balanced and enough tannin even on the third night. Outstanding, but I highly recommend a significant decanting.

Rich, but it's also structured, clean, and ultimately, balanced. It's also undeniably, unapologetically, California. That said, it's one of those rare wines that - if you're looking for/prefer it - brings the best of both worlds. Dense, but at times weightless, too, thanks to plenty of fresh acids. Gorgeous color draws you in, aromas do the same, but one taste and you realize the bottle's going to go pretty quickly regardless of how much you might want to sit and meditate with it. Mere mortals be warned! Is this the new Classic California Cab? highly recommended

Served non-blind, side-by-side with 2010 Ark Vyd; six hours aeration in decanter.

I decide to drink this after all the highs and lows and my horrid experience with this vintage Grand estates Merlot, which was dreadful while the cab was passable for a warm vintage. Some describe this as over-oaked, I find that these people must not be used to really oaked wines with new french, American of Slovenian Oak as this is obviously stainless steel with some chips. Yes this sports some coffee grounds, dark cocoa powder and vanilla, so call it cappuccino, but its not over whelming or is any unintegrated oak. The vintage was warm, maybe this was harvested a bit too late, but the dark fruit comes with a lower acidity, but there is tannin but its dusty and fine. Nothing overwhelming and it may be fine for appetizers or on its own, if served a few degrees below room temp.

Don't think you can replace good food or mountain cabernet with this wine as it doesn't hold up with food that needs a more acidic wine, but still this isn't plonk, nor would I mind serving this to non-winos with preconceived notions. If served blind, most would find this quite enjoyable, but to a seasoned wino, this stands out as warm vintage, mass produced, but there is certainly a place for good quality of wine made in mass for drinking within the 5 years.

Decanted 4 hours prior to tasting. Undefined red fruits and strident acid screeching across the palate then fading toward the back , thankfully. I look forward to this producer in good years, but this bottle should have been heavily discounted or even gone undeclared. What to do with the rest of this vintage is the question.
