From 375, this was too port-like to drink.

WOTY candidate.

Poured out two glasses to breathe an hour or so. Immediately grabbed by cured meat & some red fruited aromatics. The nose just opened & deepened as dinner went on.

This is soft & approachable on the palate. Light & elegant at first w/some red & black berry fruit brightened by ample acidity. As it breathes, it picks up weight, but never loses freshness or dexterity on the palate. Elegant is the word here. Lingering finish where the savory notes re-emerge.

Paired w/ a pan roasted chicken, beets & chermoula rice. Brilliant & versatile with all of those different flavors. Notable with the earthy beets.

Dark red with magenta rim, light cherry nose. Fruity and aromatic on the PnP. Opened my first Patti Green to assess the style, a little more fruity than I like, so will let them age awhile. Very nicely balanced and a lovely wine for those wanting to drink a young fruity wine. On the second night, the tart berry is replacing the aromatic notes, some funky notes, I'm liking this a lot. Give it some time like a previous note said. Very good for the sub $20 price. Another night and this wine has fabulous balance of fruit and acid. Silky smooth with some light mineral tannins.

I opened this about an hour ago, just sitting watching some Hawks/Kings hockey and taking the wine in without food. I'm a fan of the winery, for sure, and I was jazzed up to get one of these opened to see what 11.4% syrah tastes like: would it taste dilute, green, crappy, awkward, etc? Putting aside the discussion about alc %, I'll just call this as I see it. Damn good. Aromatically, this is hard to miss, as it's packed up with smoke, cracked black pepper and spices--really distinctive. The palate? Juicy, with juicy blue fruit, red rancher hard candy, olive, leather and a cool savory quality that I consistently associate to this bottling. For a comparison, this reminds me a lot of the 2010 Copain Baker Ranch, and no surprise given the amount of this vineyard in the composition of the wine (40%), it speaks of the Armagh Vineyard. This is not lean, weedy or under-nourished but instead savory, bright fruited and good. On the second day open, the wine remains juicy and the blue fruit has really come into the foreground, with a long finish. What will turn off some here, I believe, is the cool climate, meaty, savory quality, which is precisely why I buy and enjoy the Wind Gap wines. I dig what Pax continues to do with the Wind Gap wines, pushing the edges of things and doing it fantastic.

A warning: this definitely needs air. Thin and insipid right out of the bottle. After a night corked on the counter, a total transformation. Beautiful raspberry and orange peel on the nose and palate. Driving acidity. Really a stunning wine.

It may be because I drank this after a week of drinking burgs, but this was just too ripe for me.

6/10/2013 9:18:00 AM - Yeah, I realize it's a bit unfair. Still, there was some pruniness that I don't like in any GSM wines (which I do drink a fair bit of!). I'll give my other bottle a few years. Thanks for the comment!

I really, really want to love Cabot wines. And I have loved the pinot, but this didn't grab me. Very reductive, never really blew off. Okay fruit and acid, but a little disjoint. Okay, but not great.

1/26/2013 10:51:00 AM - Definitely red-fruited. Strawberry all the way.

Perhaps lean is in the eye of the beholder. I would call this wine "exuberant". Looks like he tasted at an R-M event; perhaps this is leaner than the rest of the lineup?

I'm tempted to pop a 2010 Copain Monument Tree soon... we'll see how that goes.

Pros: nice full body, good fruit/earth mix on the palate.
Cons: Very little on the nose, heat is quite apparent.

A pretty good WA syrah, but not a very good value.

  • Comment posted by Michael Davidson:

1/15/2013 3:21:00 PM - Thanks for the comment! I've found that most WA syrahs drink pretty well right out of the gate, but I do have a 2008 of this wine. I'll hold on to it for a while and see what happens.

Drank over the course of three nights, and noticed no fall-off over that time.

Meatier and more savory than I was expecting, but still with great acidity and dark fruits. Very well balanced. Excellent syrah.

I agree largely with smphelps below. This is a good pinot, but it's not spectacular. I suspect some of the gushing by other tasters is by folks who don't often venture north to Oregon, where pinots like this are much more frequent. Nice wine, enjoyable, but nothing particularly outstanding.

    12/5/2012 9:22:00 AM - Hey Frank -

First, I hope you know how much I respect your palate. Your advocacy has lead me to a ton of great, cool-climate syrah in northern California. For my palate, folks like Copain and Wind Gap are making the best domestic syrah today.

That said, if you found this pinot outstanding, I strongly encourage you to branch out to Oregon. There's so much wonderful pinot in a similar style but with more complexity for less money. Check it out!

Dark garnet color. Typical Grenache heavy nose showing red berries and some pepper/herbal aromatics. The palate is exuberant & youthful with rich, bright raspberries accented with layers of black currants. Silky mouthfeel, concentrated & intensely fruited. Some good raw material which should mellow out in the next few years.

This is so different from my first bottle that I'm wondering whether they put in the wrong wine. Unlike the previous bottle there's no blackberry flavor at all -- instead the dominant flavors are black cherry and a strong vanilla oak component. Not bad, but not at all what I expected. Perhaps it's a phase.
