Absurd jammy style, overcooked fruit in the mouth and artificial aromas of spices and bouillon cube. Earthy? No way. A third row GR lacking any elegance. If this bottle is representative of what Decanter magazine consider a great bottle, something ought to be done in London.
Conclusion: complicated you become a Rioja lover if enjoyed this. Quite difficult you really appreciate other Rioja wineries. Probably you also liked Smoking Loon PN. Sadly.

Tristemente.

I agree a GR needs time, at least 15 years, to show its beauty. Unfortunately at this point Faustino I is nothing more that a poor sample of what a GR is. Moreover I've no complaints against Faustino winery. They are what they were. Incompressible for that Decanter award. Anything else.
A bottle variation? Of course that possibility always exists. I've got one more bottle remaining in my cellar in order to see if there will be any positive evolution. Seriously I've firm doubts. Sorry. But I wish to be wrong. I promise it.

Appearance: Clear wine with a Medium Garnet colour.

Nose: Clean nose with a pronounced intensity. This wine is developing.

Strong aromas of cooked red fruits right off the bat, strawberries and red apples particularly. Pronounced american oak, contributing vanilla, cloves and nutmeg. Dried tobacco and leather bring up the rear with soft anis and baking spices rounded off the smell - truly a lovely collection of aromas!

Palate:
Dry
Medium- Alcohol
Medium+ acidity
Medium tannins - quite hard to pinpoint this as they were so silky smooth
Medium+ intensity
Medium+ body
Long finish

The palate is a real treat and absolutely bench-mark Rioja. A symphony of cooked red fruit, baking spices, coffee, leather, tobacco and nutmeg all held together with soft tannins and a surprisingly high acidity for its age. A long finish awaits with the more savoury notes winning out.

Excellent quality Rioja. Still drinking relatively young and could develop further - quite wonderful when you consider they produced an even more exceptional wine in the 890 from the same vintage! Premium priced at around 35 euros a bottle but well worth it. Enjoy!

About 890...traditionally we have considered as the masculine part of LRA "cause its Mazuelo contribution opposite to 904, the femenine side, where Grenache is its more characteristic varietal. Grenache always gives high acidity and some called it variation. Well, why not?
    Overall needing time, both.

Great Rioja! Big bright fruit on the nose, cherry and even orange. Big mouthfeel. More complex in the mouth - cherry, cranberry, earth, leather. Very balanced - tannins integrated with the fruit. This is easy drinking, but it will be fine for many years. Good to follow this over time.

L.A.W. Tasting: Brunello, Barolo, Super Tuscan, and Bordeaux (LA Hutchinson Cocktail and Grill): Animal hyde, lead pencil nose, with perhaps even the slightest touch of brett on the nose. Palate of pebble, plum, graphite, savory herb, and just a slight hint of green pepper. Very good acid and a persistent plus mineral finish. A wine that is simultaneously pure and nuanced and plenty of life left in it.

The wine has a deep intensity, ruby color.

Youthful nose with a medium(+) intensity. Aromas of blackberry, cassis, plum, spice box and garrigue. Lots of oak and hints of vanilla bean, fudge and dark chocolate.

The wine is dry and full bodied with a medium acidity and medium(+) tannins. Medium(+) intensity with flavors of plum, blackberry jam, spice box, oak and dark chocolate. The finish is medium(+).

Very good intensity and even though it's very oaky it has the fruit to balance it. The wine is well-made and very neat. Like many other high quality new world/international styled-wines it is so neat that it becomes boring. It's still rather youthful and needs time.

Dark crimson color turning to rust at the rim with a silver lining. The nose is flamboyantly perfumed and gives off old shoe box, mushroom, newly opened can of tennis balls, tobacco, currant, and oak. The palate is full-bodied with a silky texture. Flavors of black currant, blackberry, dark chocolate, cigar box, black tea, meat, graphite, pencil shavings and dried herbs form the core. Very elegantly balanced and harmonious. A tad better compared to the 2005, albeit not in structure but because of blending and layering of flavors. This is a classic that's been underrated. It just needed the time it deserved. Drink now until 2024.

Upon opening it had a very old world Bordeaux like nose, however after just a few moments of air the oak and vanilla moved forward and it took on a somewhat new world feel. After an hour of air it opened up into an elegant Rioja with nice fruit and structure and age polished tannins.
