1995 R. López de Heredia Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Bosconia

Tempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more

6/29/2015 - MAOC wrote: NR

Decanted for a couple of hours and drunk across 2-3. The nose is very distinctively Bosconia - delicate slightly sour cherry with hints of herbs and leather, intoxicating even at quite q primary phase. The palate is silky but intense with lovely balance. The wine changed constantly in the glass, first producing a distinctive pleasant dill note which morphed into a meaty tone as the wine seemed to put on some weight in the final glass. Great now as not too coiled, but loads of time in hand. ****(1/2)

    Nice and passionate TN.
In your opinion, when is it going to peak? Around 2026?
    Cheers!

  • Comment posted by Harley1199:

6/29/2015 1:14:00 PM - Dear Kriz so why to wait? Mainly 'cause who don't know what a Burgundian 1er Cru is. Why not to add complexity? Why not to enjoy it well-aged, in that decadent aristocracy? That's the point I love the most.
As you said, I've got two bottles so you're invited to open one of them on next 2026. In eleven years? That's nothing :-)

Yep, it was almost a heat record in Bordeaux. In spite of that nowadays only a few can feel them truly hottie.
Surely you're right but in my modest view Lynch Bages is at its best when twenty years old. I'll inform you on next 2022 :-)

Palo Cortado, natural born or quimical made? (Enoteca Barolo - Madrid): Holly shit. Notes of acetone on the nose. Frightful in the mouth. Sweet, soft and absurdly short. I prefer to think it was flawed, but thinking what it is, is that possible? Gaspar Florido origin.

Repugnante. Notas a acetona en nariz. Espantosa en boca. Dulce, suave y absurdamente corta. Prefiero pensar que estaba mal, pero pensando lo que es, es eso posible? Origen Gaspar Florido.

5th bottle in several years. I served this to my friends blind at a party. It changed all throughout the night in the decanter. Vanilla and American oak followed by sweet cherry and blood orange. Long finish. Traditional rioja that most got blind. Will last for decades. A special wine.

A tiny bit of Brett but that quickly blows off (but I am one who likes Brett in moderation) revealing some raspberry, cassis, and plenty of earth. On the palate? This gets a Whoa, and maybe more (3?). Cinnamon and spice with red berry fruit. Finish? Fantastic. thedrunkencyclist.com

At a really good place right now; medium body, darker berry fruits with sappy aspect, slight foresty notes; elegant, delicious; not tons of complexity, but very solid for village level. Reaching a very good place right now, drinking well and will should hold well for another 5+?

2001 Faustino Rioja I Gran Reserva

Tempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more

6/21/2015 - ProfByron Likes this wine: 90 points

I was impressed.

Surprisingly dark colour. Rather classic Rioja aromas, showing touch of aged complexity, retrained oak.

But on the palate...warm, far fresher younger than expected. It's attractive now, for those who like young wines, but I'd prefer to see it in 2-5 years.

A 2008 Bordeaux tasted next to this reeked of new oak. This Rioja rests on firm deep fruit. Good wine. Will it be great?

PS I notice that the tasting notes (below) are very varied for this wine. You'd think different people were tasting a different wine. Makes me wonder if there weren't quite different bottlings. Perhaps?

  • Comment posted by Harley1199:

    6/21/2015 7:20:00 AM - Hi there Profbyron,
Pretty obvious you'd liked the wine but also
In spite Faustino isn't, by far, my favourite Rioja brand I've to say that a different bottling was made here only 'cause different people's perception isn't very fair.
As some great old world bottles, Rioja uses to need time and people can't understand at which state the bottle is. For example, considering this is a GR wine coming from an outstanding vintage, the wine is, again by far, very very young. In fact it is relatively new in the market.
I hope you're going to have more opportunities to taste even more than four Rioja wines in order to settle a proper opinion :-)
In my view Rioja requires an extra of your patience but usually pays every minute you have dedicated. Let's keep in touch.
    Cheers!
PS. In my experience, Decanter award is nothing more than a marketing operation

Intense medium-red in the glass. Pouring from the bottle into the decanter, revealed prominent amber hues. No sediment in bottle. Cherry, eucalyptus, clove, chocolate, and smoke on the nose. Same notes on the palate. Wonderfully balanced, integrated, and complex. Long cherry, balsamic finish with chalky tannins. Another great bottle of 904. Paired well with grilled Ribeye and garlic-tarragon mashed potatoes.

This one did take a few hours in the decanter to settle down. Immediately after opening, it was quite oaky. Time to breathe helped with that.

Unfortunately I think this was opened too early and from the initial sensations of leather the tannin levels appear to be still overly prominent but a layer of complex flavors gradually emerged including pepper, white Korean strawberries, ripe plums, and black cherries. The finish is incredibly smooth and silky, but dries out a touch at the end. Overall this is a really well made wine that probably needs to be opened 4-5 hours before consuming.

He bebido unas cuantas 904 del 95 y sólo he obtenido satisfacciones. Esta botella era más floja de todas. No se puede ganar siempre :-)
