1998 La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva 890

Tempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more

4/10/2014 - peterseville Likes this wine: NR

Somewhat closed - only opened 2 hours before tasting. Would have benefited from decanting, or at least opening several hours earlier.

Menthol notes, some acidity, good red fruits, chewy tannins. A truly beautiful wine, apart from the price point!

[£93 at Loki Wines (Birmingham) La Rioja Alta tasting]

93£? You said just pricey? What a f#ck! Those of Loki know how to make their clients happy. So sorry...
I think you've to assume that an economic ticket flight to Spain plus what you've to pay for the bottle here is...cheaper!
At the same time you can enjoy food and some sunny weather :-)

Inviting and complex nose of red fruits, tea, earth, sweet spice, etc. Smooth and balanced palate, slightly spicy. Medium finish. Burgundian in style, and its low alcohol content of 12.5% is a plus for me. Tasted even fresher and more integrated the next day, +1.

    4/13/2014 10:50:00 AM - Hi there J30,
It was better even on 2nd day cause it's very early for this bottle. Needs time or some air but potential, I agree, it's enormous and however quite delicious at this stage.
    I suggest a drinking window from 2016 to 2036.

Been almost a year since the last botttle, and again I should have waited longer. There is a hint more fruit that last time and a touch more sweetness, but I still think this will be much better in 3-5 years time.
Modern in style. A brute of a wine. Big and bold. Lots of wood and tannin. Core of dark fruit slowly starting to emerge.
Please hold off drinking if you can. I am going to wait at least another 12 months until the next bottle.

consumed in new orleans...interestingly this bottle was not quite as good as other notes. solid but missed being outstanding as it missed the verve and energy. I thought it could have had a bit better balance and acidity to give it lift and the secondary flavors were not coming through on this bottle. surely good but not up to expectations.

Trial balloon: It needs an hour to mellow and an extra hour to open up. The trouble with having it in a restaurant is that the meal is over by the time it's ready (half-bottle at Tertulia, New York).
Nevertheless, this is great wine but needs time.
Starts off with a strong strawberry nose. More complex red-fruit profile after 90 minutes (with leather and plum indeed and perhaps a hint of hibiscus and cardamon too).
In my opinion the 2001 are just beginning to blossom. The 2004s should be kept for a while. Drink 2016-2024+ and make sure to let it breath. I won't be touching the bottles in my own cellar for a few more years. 90-92+

Buena longitud y buen volumen. Lo mejor del vino sin duda. ESTA RICO.

La pinot se adivina con el paso del tiempo. Lo sé, soy un ventajista :) Algo caro...las comparaciones son odiosas.

Registrando vinos en mi cabeza.

750ml purchased at auction, stood for weeks. Decanted for an hour and then served over the next two. Dark ruby, almost purple color. Pretty floral notes on the nose. Big, rich mouthfeel of stewed prunes and plum, with some oak present and just barely a hint of cocoa on the finish. A very enjoyable Amarone-light. I'm not sure which food I would serve with this, if any such pairing were required!

Decanted for 1hr. Very classically styled bordeaux. Still tastes young. Typical notes of blackcurrant, cedar and tobacco. Elegant and finely balanced with relatively well integrated tannins. Let down somewhat by a shorter finish. Did not evolve significantly over a 2hr dinner. Enjoyable now but still has a decade or more left in it.

Stone fruit on the palette. Soft tannins. Good acidity. Great balance and length. Medium bodied, but floaty in a way that old vines can be. I don't yet know much about Spanish wines, but have heard that the 2004 vintage was a big one for Spain. From that perspective I was expecting bigger fruit. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this bottle.

I'm not usually a fan of the 2003 vintage, but this is excellent and not at all over ripe. Orange marmalade and honey nose. Rich mouth feel, moderate acidity. Sauternes always come across a bit hot to me and this one does as well, but not unreasonably. Orange and apricot marmalade continues into the mouth and finish, with the finish ending on a pleasant bitter orange rind note. Feel this is still tight and will improve substantially over time.
