This is an interesting wine. We poured samples into Riedel burgundy and sauvignon blanc glasses to compare flavor profiles. S.V. flint-y with pleasant tart citrus notes. Completely different animal drunk from burgundy glasses -- much rounder mouthfeel, unctuousness reminiscent a fine barrel-aged chardonnay and more distinguishable melon, lemon, and tropical fruit flavors on the palate. Here's to proper stemware!

7/10/2016 4:53:00 PM - Not sure that the experts would say a burgundy glass is the "proper" stemware for a Godello. But I also prefer any fairly aromatic white (including SBs) in a burgundy glass. It really helps accentuate the nose. Some austere style whites (e.g., chablis) don't fare as well. Salud!

Similar to everyone else's notes - a gorgeous oxidized, zippy, complex white. Salty, nutty, baked (mushy) apple, a little acetaldehyde, citrus, hint of butterscotch. A bit like a Sercial Madeira with the oxidation, nutty notes and high acidity, but more complexity to this. A great aperitif, would probably also do very well with food.

A good chenin, but doesn't quite compare to a Loire CB in same price range. Only moderately intense nose, with honeysuckle, peach, sweet red apple, lanolin. Citrus and salty minerality on the palate. Medium+ body and acidity, medium alcohol, medium finish, with slightly unpleasant oaky & added citric acid notes. A little flabby on mid-palate, but finishes crisply. No better on day 2. More pithy citrus on the finish. This definitely needs to approach room temperature - it opens up more and smooths out a bit.

  • Comment posted by budh:

9/26/2015 6:10:00 PM - It certainly might mellow a bit with another year or two in bottle. The oaky and harsh acidic notes should tone down some. I don't think it has enough acidity to last for too long though.

The wine looks violet colored. The legs are slow. There is light sediment in the bottle. The body is light. The wine has coarse texture. The wine finishes short. The wine has high acidity.
Not good. High tannins and loads of acidity. Sharp bouquet. May improve with age.

12/13/2014 11:50:00 PM - Warren987, welcome to cellar tracker! Please be aware that your ratings impact a wine's overall score, so it is more helpful to the rest of us if you use a scoring scale that is consistent with most everyone else. Generally, most wines will fall in the 80 - 92 point range (assuming they are decent, drinkable, not flawed). 70 points would generally indicate you had to spit it out. When you see that 52 other tasting notes for this wine average 87.3 points, you could maybe assume that you got a flawed bottle, or you really just don't care for this style of wine. If you want to use your own scale, perhaps you could just mention it in the body of the note, and not use the scoring box. Just trying to be helpful...

Pretty classic Chianti - cherries, earth, dark berries, baking spices, menthol. High acidity, medium body, medium+ tannins and alcohol (13.5%), medium finish. Tannins still a little chewy. Generally a nice, fruity, almost mellow, reasonably complex Chianti. I kept going back to refill the glass. Very nice!

  • Comment posted by budh:

11/16/2014 5:56:00 PM - To clarify, by almost mellow I am referring to the tannins. They are fairly smooth, but not quite there yet. By reasonably complex, I mean that it has a decent variety of aromas and tastes going on, but not as much as some better Chiantis.

Definitely the best champagne I've ever had, but can't say it's worth the price. The texture, body, and acidity are incredible, but not much complexity to the aromas and favors. Some nice apple, citrus, yeasty, minerality, but I somehow expected more... • Comment posted by budh:

3/17/2014 3:42:00 PM - If this was your first, I might suggest trying a Sercial Madeira, which is the driest type. It's still a bit sweet, and definitely oxidized - so it's a bit of an acquired taste. But once you know what to expect, they are much easier to appreciate. I love Madeira because it has more acidity than Sherry or Port, plus it lasts forever after opening.

Overwhelming cola taste

  • Comment posted by budh:

2/27/2014 6:24:00 PM - Not sure when you say cola taste if you are including some effervescence, or just the aroma/flavor? I frequently notice effervescence with Phelps Pinots, which I don't care for. I find that vigorously shaking the bottle (after pouring a glass, so there is some room to shake), or splashing a glass back and forth into another glass, gets rid of the excess CO2 that causes the effervescence.

Deep ruby color. The fruit aromas really smack you in the face - very intense raspberry & blackberry. The fruit is so intense, it's hard to make out the other aromas - violet, licorice, cedar. Same for the palate. Full-bodied, medium (+) acidity, nice soft & well-integrated tannins. High alcohol (14.5%) that is quite noticeable initially, but not after a few sips. Long, smooth, fruity finish. I would have hoped for a lot more tertiary aromas and flavors after 10+ years. Makes me wonder what this tasted like several years ago - even fruitier? Big wine, well balanced, smooth, good value. Day 2 update: used a Bordeaux glass instead of a Syrah glass that intensifies aromas with a narrow rim. Not sure how much of the difference is due to the different glass vs. the extra air time? The fruit has toned down a bit, and some forest floor, leather and meat notes are there. A nice improvement. Still fruity and luscious.

The tannins in this wine gave me a migraine. Perhaps my bottle was flawed

  • Comment posted by budh:

1/21/2014 8:22:00 PM - I don't this wine has any noticeable tannin to speak of. Maybe some other trigger, or something else in the wine's chemistry that brought the migraine on? Have other reds caused you any problems? For me, Phelps Pinots have overly high CO2 - almost effervescent. I have to pour it back and forth between glasses (or bottles) to blow the CO2 off, and then it's fine. I wouldn't think that would be a migraine trigger, but who knows.....

I chilled this to about 60 degrees, and wound up doing a vigorous aeration to blow off the excess CO2. Both helped it a lot for me. Lots of red berries - cranberries, tart cherry, strawberry. Plus chocolate, cinnamon, cloves, pepper, minerality, and somewhat harsh oak. I like the complexity and lighter fruit style. A very pleasant drink.

  • Comment posted by budh:

1/12/2014 5:35:00 PM - Eric, thanks for relaying the oak info. I went through a period of a few months when several Pinots seemed oaky and harsh to me. I eventually concluded that it must be allergy related. I hadn't had a problem in a while until now. And it does correspond to some allergy problems. I just find it strange (and frustrating) that it only happens with Pinots, not other wines that are exposed to far more oak. Anyway, I edited my TN to remove the oaky comment.

My first Copain, but won't be the last.... Really enjoyed it. Lovely ruby color (actually more dark cherry colored). On the nose lots of red fruit - raspberry, strawberry, cherry, along with some violet, vanilla, nice barnyard funk, baking spice, earthy minerality, and savory notes. Surprisingly ripe fruit and full body on the palate - more central coast than north coast. High acidity, but the fruit is so ripe it almost tastes a bit flabby. Low tannins. That's my main complaint - a little out of balance. Not my preferred style, but still a very nice drink. Day 3 update - chilled to about 60 degrees; very different (I assume mainly from the extra time, but the chilling has some effect as well). Still ripe fruit, but tarter cherry, more minerality, no flabbiness. Still very complex and funky. Much more to my liking.

An almost SQN-like nose - very intense aromas of licorice, red and black berry, menthol, earth, tobacco, chocolate, graphite. On the palate it's tart cherry, licorice, minerality, earthy. Full bodied, high acidity, high tannins (they build up over time), medium alcohol (14%). While this may certainly last 20 years, I don't think it's as far away from its sweet spot as some people do. The tannins are reasonably smooth already and it's already got some nice tertiary aromas. Wish I had a case so I could try a bottle every year to check out its development.

  • Comment posted by budh:

9/21/2013 2:52:00 PM - Just wondering if what you didn't care for was a bit of a jammy effervescence? If so, you might try a "vigorous" decant instead of a regular one - pouring it back and forth a couple times with some gusto, in order to release the trapped CO2. I discovered this trick for Phelps Pinots (and a few other producers) recently, and it makes a big difference for me.

  • Comment posted by budh:

7/24/2013 9:26:00 PM - Not sure what you mean by medicinal? But if you have more Freestone Pinot, you might try either shaking the bottle a bit before opening, or do a vigorous (pour back and forth once or twice) decant to release some of the trapped CO2. They leave more CO2 in it when bottling in order to use less sulphur dioxide, and it can leave the wine a bit fizzy initially.

Garnet with medium viscosity in the glass. Funky nose of squash, reductive red fruit, cassis and dark green veggies. Medium body with present fruit that is marred by an awful oak treatment. The mouthfeel is mucky and the medium finish shows some terrible spoiled produce notes. I tasted twice but had to spit both and rinse. IMO the bottle wasn't shot either.
