Nose of dark red fruits, bacon fat, smoked ham. Thick, mouth-coating palate of dark smoky fruit, charcoal, raw lamb, and a layer of dried herbs. The herbal component builds on the finish, adding white pepper, dark cherry, and both oak and balsa wood driven by light acidity. Nice homage to a Rhone style Syrah, though it lacks a distinctive point of view.

Mini vertical of the 96 and 05. The 96 was beautiful with expressive nose of cassis, graphite and tobacco. Medium bodied and long finish Drinking well! It was the oldest of line up of 05,06, and 2012 Bordeaux’s and Napa cab. Held us own in a strong crowd

1/16/2023 9:14:00 PM - Interesting observation you make a good point. We had these 2 in a tasting of 8 wines, including a 2005 Scarecrow, 2005 Beringer private reserve, a 2006 Leoville Barton, 2012 Pape Clement a 2012 Kamen and a 2006 Monte Bello. Scoring was tough as they were all extraordinary. I did not dink the 2005 for being youthful and probably gave it credit for development But all were just wonderful wines. I agree with you about the 1996 Cos, it was just a wonderful wine in the full bloom of maturity.

Medium garnet with bricking. Cork was immaculate and almost new looking. I have had it cellared since 2013 and most of my wine age behind the usual profiles Because my cellar range is 48 to 58 degrees. However this wine showed significant age with prunish and sherry oxidation notes to the nose. The body was light with resolved Tannins but enough acidity to give some life. Decent balance and some dark fruit left. Medium finish. Not bad but not hoped for more. Bought from Premier Cru.

PnP. Plum to garnet in color with some lightening at the rim. Medium bodied. Medium viscosity. Expressive nose has meat and game of the Mourvèdre with some kir and spice notes poking underneath. Medium dark fruits with great acid and resolved tannins in balance and medium long finish. Beautiful wine in its mature phase but not fading at all. Would drink this blind with older CDP and bet no one could pick out the American cousin

5/3/2020 2:41:00 PM - It would be fun to try. I think this was either a leaner year or the bottle age took away all of those fruit forward notes that mark US wines. Or the Perrin touch came through!

PnP and drunk over 2 days. Purple with some lightening at the rim but fully extracted by appearance. Expressive nose of blueberries, some plum and touch of licorice and tobacco. Purity of fruit is impressive with balanced round tannins and acidity. Long finish. Nose slightly more expressive and savory notes more noticeable on day 2

Dark ruby to purple in color. Lovely nose of meat forest floor and spice. Lighter bodied with dark fruits plums and some spice. It has a good acid balance to the medium partially resolved tannins. Good finish. Plenty of time left but Officer gives end of life 2020. Add another 5 easily.

Yikes, not a huge fan of this bottle. Nice bouquet, but this had a heavy woodsy element (oak?), minus the vanilla. Alcohol was present and a wee bit too forward. Maybe just an off bottle?

  • Comment posted by jaumealaska:

11/22/2018 4:40:00 PM - I try to drink these at 60 degrees or so. Eases the volatility of the alcohol. My bottle was drinking well.

My wife is a huge Caymus fan so I bought a case of this. Did not enjoy the overly sweet fruit extravaganza a few years back. Was hoping it would be a bit more approachable in time. It’s okay. Certainly not worth the cost, but my wife is enjoying it, so what the hell. Still too fruity. Overly ripe cherries and a syrupy sweet menthol flavors. A bomb on the tongue, but a touch more balanced now than a few years ago.
