This is not my typical style of wine that I enjoy. However, there is something about it that I love. So much so, I’m going to try to buy more. It is one of those wines that I wouldn’t want to drink every week, but once every six months is a good cycle. Pop n poured. Served with Napolitano style pizza.

Medium bodied, fused modern and traditional styling. Disjointed and slightly alcoholic at 55F, it comes into its own closer to room temperature and with a few hours wait. But even with 6 hours on top of 4 years the nose stays shy. Palate is simple: minerality first with strong oak influence though just a bit metallic - fruit is browned pears alongside dried tree fruits (apple, hint of apricot). The finish is just wood, and flat from low acidity. A fat Chardonnay, no crispness.

Ultimately the low quality of oak and lack of brightness to back up the minerality makes it a surprise (to me) loss for Ramey, a brand usually you would know you're going to enjoy some elements of mastery even if it's not your style. This is unfortunately to the tune of generic mass produced wine, it could have any unrecognizable label on it. $15 Kirkland, even.

Many $30-40 coastal California chardonnays would outclass this in old world styling. Recently drank a Madson from Santa Cruz Mountains and it's well beyond this for the price.

After seeing Diane K post a recent note I thought I’d check in on this wine, one of my favorites from Martin Müllen. Right out the gate there is an elegant and playful nose of orange peel, orange blossom, grapefruit pith, dried pear and apricot, fresh-cut herbs, and stony minerals. The palate has mostly dried orange citrus with a touch of ripe stone fruit in the background, giving the wine just a slight perception of sweetness, leading into zesty acids and stony/slate minerals. The mineral notes linger on and on until the next sip.

I think this is at peak development, and should have a nice 10-15 year drinking window ahead of it. Delicious!

Merely Meh, this wine seemed tired, but not really over the hill. Just Lacking in any real fruit, with no discernable elements of bottle ageing and rather one-dimensional. This could have been anything. Tasted alongside the the awesome 2012 Pagani from Bedrock, this frankly disappointed. There didn't seem anything wrong with the wine but I can't rule out a bad bottle. I love Carlisle wines and this is the only bottle of less-than-exciting Carlisle I've tried, so I chalk this up as an anomaly. But if you still have some, definitely try it now.

#19-13, 12% abv. This is one of the most (if not the most) glorious bottles of sub-$30 wine I've ever had. The nose is a brilliant mix of rock dust, sweet orchard fruit, and green herbs, and interestingly doesn't have the white fruit that I associated with 2012 at release. There is just the right amount of sweetness hinted at by the nose too. The palate is very complex, and there is absolutely enough fruit that this doesn't feel emaciated. A tiny bit of residual sugar here helps too, I'm sure. Minerally, fresh, and primordially clean, this is some seriously incredible riesling.

As a side note, I bought this on the insistence of Salil and Seth at a phase in my life where I didn't particularly care for drier rieslings. As much as I hate to admit it, they were dead right on this, and I wish I bought a lot more.

First bottle of six. Very strong fruit front end, with softness unusual in a nebbiolo. After 30 mins or so, the backbone begins to show up with a bit more of the tannic bite and power. Definitely not my favorite Nebbi but a nice change of pace. Can satiate my nebbiolo addiction at least a bit... Will see how this develops over the next few years.

Bright red fruits, cinnamon, white pepper, background tannins, intense fruit with great balance but a bit thin at the moment, I wonder how this will age as I don’t see the 98 pt potential that Jeb does. It’s still a very good wine.

8/1/2019 9:57:00 AM - how long do you usually age your Carlisle Zin? i am drinking my '06 and '07 now and they are just inching into maturity. put one away for a decade - it will reward.

8/1/2019 11:23:00 AM - my comment was originally not to you but to the note. you jumped in to say that zins should not need age to be good. i find that statement just plain strange - since we allow so many wines that age to show true potential.

Tasted at the winery. Previously tasted the winery seven months ago and my notes remain consistent. A mixture of white peach and citrus (especially lime) on the nose. Medium bodied with apple, pear and melon upfront and lots of white peach through the middle. The mid-body has the most density and the wine overall was the most expressive of the various vintages from the Seneca East site. Good acidity on the backside and balance seems to have improved slightly from my prior tasting. The contrast between the peach mid-body and the tart citrus backside and the way those notes blend together remain one of the highpoints of this wine. I plan to try my next from bottle in early July 2019 as part of a mini-vertical of Seneca East 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Deep yellow peach, ripe, hint of mango and passion fruit, deep mid of sweet peach, pear, custard, lemon custard toward the back, softer but with great mineral hiding beneath. Showing a bit of red berry, right before a long mirabelle and mineral finish. Sooo good but needs more time.

Tasted at the winery. Impressive nose, showing lime and grapefruit notes. Medium bodied (10.6% ABV) with pear, apple and melon upfront, gaining good depth, openness and roundness through the middle and bringing in more noticeably peach notes. Grapefruit, lime and lemon notes and the back, along with enough tart, acidity driven qualities to provide good contrast and structure to the richer mid-body. This contrast between the mid-body and the finish actually came off as a very clean, integrated transition, highlighting the best elements of both. Next from bottle for me will be Summer 2019.
