2005 Virgile Lignier Clos de la Roche

Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

1/30/2021 - DrZett wrote: 95 points

Virgile Lignier, who joined his father Maurice at the domaine in 1992, is the fourth generation to run the family property. This was also the first year that the estate started bottling their wines and selling them directly.
Great nose with cherry, raspberry and soft stable notes. On the palate ripe cherries, blueberries, fresh mushrooms, dark pepper and soft earthy notes. Medium (-) bodied with a precise and fresh medium intense acidity. Medium intense tannins, nicely integrated. Great complexity and depth. It has a beautiful overall balance. Long, fine and savory finish with herbal notes at the end.
A beautiful example for a nice Clos de la Roche from a small producer. In a good spot right now, drink now until 2030. (IG)

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend more

A few days ago I participated in a once in a lifetime tasting organized by Armin Diel. We tasted 12 vintages of wine icon Château Le Pin from Pomerol, all out of magnum bottles from Armin’s private cellar. All were in fantastic shape - even Monsieur Alexandre Thienpont took part in this tasting. What an extraordinary experience. Today’s market prices for magnums are between 7,000-18,000 bucks per bottle. Production figures are at the end of each vintage.

2000 Most elegant and complex one, perfect balance, felt very classic. 97/100 5,678 std / 274 mg

2004 Beautiful nose, nice grip on the palate, great ripe fruit. 95/100 8,800 std / 300 mg

2005 Showed some soft tertiary notes, fantastic depth and structure. Incredible balance. 97/100 5,900 std / 350 mg

2006 Elegant nose with soft aging notes. Beautiful balance and depth. 95/100 5,420 std / 340 mg

2007 Good structure and balance. Some green tannins. 93/100 7,200 std / 360 mg

2009 Super complexity, lots of fruits, but not overdone. Incredible depth. 96/100 5,882 std / 310 mg

2010 Fantastic complexity. Some beautiful mineral notes and an endless finish. 97/100 5,035 std / 234 mg

2011 Great depth and fine fruit structure. Alcohol felt a little too dominant. 93/100 5,450 std / 287 mg

2015 Extraordinary vintage. Power, fruit, depth and elegance, it had everything! Endless finish. 98/100 5,508 std / 280 mg

2016 Great fruit structure, tannins not integrated yet. Very long finish. 95/100 5,676 std / 298 mg

2017 Elegant vintage, very precise structure. Tannins are still grippy, not integrated yet. Will be fantastic in the future. 95/100 4,339 std / 441 mg

2018 Great fruit notes, some vanilla too. Beautiful complexity. Alcohol is a little hot. Too young, needs more time. 94/100 4,505 std / 372 mg

I won’t call a winner this time, drinking these icons side by side was a fantastic experience and although some vintages were showing not as good as others, all were absolutely enjoyable.
Thank you Armin for the beautiful evening.
Cheers 🍷

The kind of wine you might drink the day after an orgy, reflecting on life and how it all happened the way it did ... and what else it could have been and who you should have spent it with, how boring it was and why it didn't have to be that way. As it also is with wine - all this lame mainstream stuff. Then there's Ringland (and a few others). Hedonistic escapism, break free, tear down 4he barriers and just run wild.

7/3/2020 11:06:00 PM - It wasn’t my bottle. Was a bottle from my friends cellar. The bottle was fine - no obvious faults. I don’t think that it was purchased upon release - I guess it’s from winbid or something like that. Probably storage issues since the other notes sound amazing. On the other hand, 38 years for a Barbaresco is quite a lot - might have been a cork issue too.

Tasted together with the 2005. Both wines showed a remarkable intensity but were definitely neither pleasant nor charming at all. The 2010 was a little bit more open but is still less attractive than the potentially inferior vintages 2012 and 2008. Won’t open the next bottle before 2030!

Beautiful dark fruits and floral notes in the nose.
Black cherries, plum, mocha and some smoked aromas on the palate. Very complex body with great structure and stiff tannins - not too heavy, just perfect.
It is aged for 14 month in French barriques.
It is just my second vintage of this wine after trying the 2009 a few years ago. I rated the 2009 with 91 points but the 2010 is even better! It is perfect now but will gain complexity over the next couple years and will be perfect around 2021.
Great price tag for this quality too in my opinion. If you see it in a restaurant or a wine store give it a try! Just 2,200 cases produced in 2010.

3/22/2019 2:24:00 AM - Since double magnums need a little more time I would suggest opening it somewhere between 2022-2030. But as always, if you want to drink it, just open it whenever you want and give it some air. I always decant larger bottles in regular decanter so that they get more air. Cheers

5/10/2018 1:59:00 AM - Good question and to be honest i had to look it up since I always try to avoid these wines. The "Kammerpreismünze" on the neck of the bottle does still exist. It is organized by the individual German states (Bundesländer). It is more used for wines in the low price segment and in my opinion it says nothing about the quality of the wines. If you're looking for good German producers take a look in here: www.vdp.de/en/home/ - you nearly never go wrong with these producers.

No, I didn't decant it - I'm very cautious when it comes to older vintages and decanting. I simply let it in the open bottle for about 30-40min before drinking it. Drank it over an hour - was getting more and more beautiful. I got my bottle from a wine auction - bottle variation are a big factor when it comes to 50 year old wines.

2007 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Reserve

Napa Valley more

10/1/2016 - WineDr. Does not like this wine: 89 points

Anderson's CVV Cabernet Sauvignon has long been one of my favorites: Top tier in quality and very age-worthy, but without a 3-digit price tag to match. I bought a case of the the highly acclaimed 2007 vintage years ago. It has been stored under ideal climate-controlled conditions.

Having read glowing reviews, I figured it was time to try it. Over the past week, we drank 3 bottles. They were decanted about 2 hours beforehand and served at cellar temperature. All 3 bottles had good ullage and vibrant ruby color without any appreciable browning. None showed any cork taint or other inherent flaws.

Unfortunately, all 3 bottles disappointed equally. They lacked the full-bodied richness and smooth finish I expected. While drinkable, it was clear that they were already beyond their peak by at least a couple of years. All 3 bottles also threw off considerable sediment, not surprising as I don't think this wine is filtered or fined.

I would have loved to chime in with a 94 or 95 points score, but even my 89 points score is generous.

What happened? I bought the wine online. Was it "damaged" (unbeknownst to me) in shipment? Was there a bad batch from the winery? One thing is for certain: It doesn't taste anywhere near up to expectations, not gas it aged gracefully.
