Popped to start the festivities for a milestone birthday dinner at the Inn at Little Washington, this bottle predates the current Edition numbering so it obviously included some older vintages. This was drinking beautifully, with a delicate bead and excellent acidity, great depth and complexity, tho not as "yeasty" as I usually think of with Krug. A perfect way to start.
Wines:
Krug Grande Cuvée NV;
2010 Bonneau du Martray Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru;
2010 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru;
2009 d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs;
1989 Chateau Montrose; and

Whoa- don't buy this expecting a typical California Zin full of black fruits and jam. The 13.5%ABV led me to expect a lighter experience than usual, but I was still surprised pouring this pale translucent ruby wine into the glass. This is Zinfandel?! The aromas are wonderful, though wholly atypical of California Zin: juicy raspberry and cherry, blood orange, Concord grapes, cinnamon and nutmeg. In the mouth: medium acidity, fine tannins, a lushness of body that is just downright suave. Red fruits complimented by a brambly spiciness that works so well together. A decently long finish with some complexity- impressive for such a young wine. What a nice wine; I want more.

There is a lightness, liveliness, and easy pleasure in this wine that is atypical among its peers. There are a few there other wines distinguish themselves similarly: Comando G ($30-500+/btl) makes similarly light delicious wines among other ponderous anonymous Spanish Garnacha. Chapelle St Theodoric makes spritely lightly extracted wines among many heavy Chateauneuf du Papes (I hear Rayas has a similar character though I've never tried that). Lopez de Heredia Gran Reserva wines are light and surprisingly subtle among its loud heavily-extracted peers. There are others. This stands among them. Lovely.

Initially tight and acidic, this quickly evolved to opulent and round as it warmed up in a broad glass. It is Cramant, I suppose, but it's pretty gorgeous already.
Retasted the last glass on day 5 and it's utterly glorious. Beautiful sunny, rich lemon-gold fruit finishing with buttercream. No excessive oxidation like the '09. It's also surprisingly Selossian, with oceanic salinity if not quite iodine/seaweed. Closer to Initial, certainly not as oxidative as VO, and it shows less precision and more buttery richness on the finish than either, Cramant vs Avize perhaps.
I think both the quality and relative value proposition have shifted here despite recent price increases, as this 2012 is a significantly better wine than than the 2005, 2009, 2011 (I haven't yet opened any 2008). I bought a case after tasting this.

Two years or so after last tasting and the pithy smoky toasted pumpkin seed flavor is still there. This is definitely mature now, and although I love it as much as ever I don’t think there is any point in trying to keep it longer. Still a few years left before decline but drink up. I have a bottle left and then plan to move onto the 2021s.

POP AND POUR NOW.....3 minutes of funk and then she opens up like my Indian on a lonely highway. I am in love. I recently had the pleasure of indulging in the divine experience of savoring my first bottle of this epic wine. An off gift from a friend, the 1990 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon. This remarkable vintage not only transported me to the realms of luxury but also struck a harmonious chord with my musical sensibilities and as an alpha, reminded me of a Egyptian princess I once summered with in southern France.

Upon pouring a glass, my senses were immediately captivated by the wine's deep, ruby hues that danced in the light like the velvety notes of a 1962 Telecaster, that is worn on the fretboard. The bouquet exuded an enchanting melange of aromas, reminiscent of an opulent symphony.
Ripe blackberries and luscious dark cherries played the leading roles, accompanied by a subtle undertone of cigar box, cedar, and hints of sweet vanilla, akin to a soft chord progression embellishing the melody. The best example of how a long sunset makes the difference.

As I took my first sip, the wine unfolded on my palate with the grace and precision of a masterful guitar solo. The rich, velvety texture embraced my tongue, coaxing forth flavors of blackcurrants and plums that intertwined seamlessly. Each sip revealed a depth that seemed to span the entire range of musical scales, from the vibrant high notes of red berries to the earthy bass notes of aged leather and tobacco.

The 1990 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon showcased impeccable balance, much like the interplay of melody and harmony in a classical composition. The fine tannins provided structure, like the crisp strings of a well-tuned guitar, ensuring a lingering resonance that continued to reverberate on my palate. It boasted a complexity that can only be achieved through years of patient aging, like a maestro perfecting their artistry through a lifetime of practice.

The wine's symphonic journey did not stop with its taste alone; it extended into a captivating, lingering finish. The notes of dark chocolate and espresso left a bittersweet aftertaste, akin to the wistful echoes of a fading melody. With each sip, the wine gracefully evolved, revealing new layers of flavor and nuance, much like the layers of harmonies within a multi-faceted guitar composition.

As a wealthy aristocrat with a passion for both the arts and the finer things in life, the 1990 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon was a true embodiment of my refined tastes. Its opulence, depth, and complexity were akin to the opulent palaces I've graced with my presence, while its finesse and intricacy resonated with the delicate precision I've honed on my guitar strings.

This extraordinary vintage deserves to be savored on grand occasions, much like the performances in aristocratic salons where the finest musicians would enthrall the elite. It is a wine that demands respect and appreciation, an elixir that rewards those with a discerning palate and a penchant for life's luxuries.

In conclusion, the 1990 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon is a true masterpiece that marries the worlds of wine and music in a harmonious union. Like a skilled guitar player, it strums the strings of luxury, complexity, and elegance, creating a symphony of flavors that resonates long after the final note has been played. With every sip, this remarkable vintage takes you on a journey through time, leaving an indelible mark on the senses and the soul, much like a virtuoso guitar performance etched into memory.

I was always a bit sceptical about this wine, feeling it over-hyped. But I have to say, that in this vintage it really hits the spot. Strawberry on the nose, Suoer elegant, not to distinguish from a very good burgundy. On the palate nice, soft tannins, but still grippy. Clearly still fruit driven, not tertiary yet. But very complex. And the length is super impressive.

Bienvenue a Champagne; 4/20/2023-4/29/2023 (Les Crayeres, various restaurants, Les Avises and a many wonderful producers): There are many opinions on this wine and it’s not easy because it is one of ‘the producers’ and probably this was ‘the’ year and if by chance you have some other top end cuvées from top producers from the year it’s almost like they are fully transparent and so you know what they can be. This wine is not like that. It’s maybe slightly more open and expressive than the last few times but every time I have it I think the wine is quieter than some others. This paired incredibly well and my most favorite version of it was with a bit of a lemon appetizer devised in the Krug food series. Pulled out the Chard style. Reminded me of the finesse of the Clos du Mesnil from this year. Just maybe a hint of what it will be. We have bought a decent amount and I look forward to drinking them one day but I am surprised at how shy this wine is. Most days I feel like I have knocked at a door that was never answered. Today I feel like someone peeked a tiny head out and then back. Perhaps in 30 years we will actually meet. I’m happy to wait.

PnP small glass, recork into the fridge. First glass reveals just a hint of lemon zest, marzipan, honey. So weightless with a beguiling depth. Palate is much more open than previous bottles at this stage, but still very tight and only showing a fraction of the potential. So very tart, the acid overwhelms the finish.

After 3 hours in the fridge it's integrated better, drinks very nicely on the palate, but still overwhelming acid on the finish. More time and all the fruit is gone. This is definitely flawed.

Champagne Tasting (Restaurant Valuas, Venlo): Very reductive at first. Flintstone is all I could smell. Then it opens up relatively nice but still remains quite tight and austere. If drinking now give it plenty of time. WOTN, but I think that's only because the Agrapart beside it shut down completely after a few minutes and did not open back up.

Bottle no. 13,660 out of 16,644 bottles produced. PNP into Riedel Superleggero Burgundy Grand Cru glass (“Flower” day): Pale bright garnet with ruby tints, brilliant colors.

First pour impressions: Across full spectrum from darker red, blue and purple berry, cherry, plum and date fruits. The most alluring and deep nose of liquorice, dried herbs and flora, sweet Vosne spices one can imagine here. What sets this apart is how each sniff changes in terms of the profile. Just amazed at how this can be achieved…

More about prestine and deep fruit flavors consistent with nose on palate then the decidedly complex spicy finish. Truly perfect example of an “iron fist in a velvet glove” here. Unending finish.

Hard to put it under 96-97 points from the first sniff.

Second pour, 30 minutes upon opening, 7/8 left: Even more exuberant fruits and more ethereal floral and herbaceous spices this round, which somehow reminds me of the absolute top examples from Bordeaux! Extremely well integrated tannins and minerality that makes this feather-weight on palate which is amazing given the incredible level of dry extract of this wine.

Third pour, 45 minutes upon opening, 5/6 left: Magical fruity notes of deep purplish cherries then berries, with the signature “hoisin” sauce like savory and mineral driven notes sets off this round. This is quickly followed by the liquorice and dried flora notes that is so complex that is reminiscent of the top of Cabernet Franc, all achieved without any reductive notes and a ultra long clean and spicy finish. This is clearly solid 97 points now for me.

Fourth pour, 1 hour upon opening, more than 2/3 left: The fruit notes, unbelievably, just keeps getting better here. What a “wow” wine but I start to worry about my vocabulary on how to describe this… Could this (still) be the “wine to end all wines”?

Fifth pour, 1 hour 15 minutes upon opening, more than 1/2 left: More about savory and noble woody spices this round, lots of dry extract and arguably more tannic suggesting the young age of this wine. Then, the organic mellow dark cherry fruits sets in and quickly fill the mid palate with tons of energy. Really complete wine here.

Sixth pour, 1 hour 30 minutes upon opening, 1/2 left: Ok this is really the “zen” moment to enjoy this wine for me - potpourri floral notes, black and blue berry fruits, ethereal Vosne spices. Savory, pencil shaving like spices on the next sniff that suggests the depth of the underlying material and pedigree here. O.M.G. this is a wine that can satisfy anything one would ever want in a rouge. 97-98 points.

Seventh pour, 1 hour 45 minutes upon opening, 1/3 left: This round is more about complex savory notes to me with “elegant” graphite / pencil shaving notes (if there is such a thing?) at first sniff. Upon some time in glass the fruits are back again with deep, slightly inky purple fruits like plums and garrique like savage notes that is not dislike the top of Syrah from the Northern Rhone… I am literally running out of descriptors to do this wine justice! 98 points.

Eighth pour, 2 hours upon opening, 1/4 left: Wow somehow this is still giving new facades every pour - menthol, minty spices set off this phase with lots of “sweet” and ripe fruits, cinnamon spices and chestnut puree notes as support from the second sniff. Still, the best defining feature here is the extreme fine minerality that inspires the level of energy the grapes have here. Retain at 98 points.

Ninth pour, 2 hours 15 minutes upon opening, 1/5 left: Hitting another climax in my view with the explosive potpourri and complex floral notes that can only be described as “fireworks” on the nose. The wine is simply regal and extremely complex and well integrated on palate at this stage and indefinitely drinkable.

Tenth pour, 2 hours 30 minutes upon opening, 1/6 left: Getting more mellow, ripe dark red date fruits. Noticeably more smoothly tannic palate here with lots of dry extracts here.

Final pour, almost 3 hours upon opening: Inch perfect wine with exuberant fruit, superbly integrated with complex floral and spices, with noticeably darker tone hues to the eyes, and the incredible integration for such a complex wine in such a compact package. The fruits are again getting even better (somehow!) with the most alluring and explosive dark red berry fruits. Then, this is followed by a wave of savory, hoisin, complex spices and hints of cocoa, coffee and liquorice. This is by far the most profound and complete wine for me ever tasted so I would say this is now 98-99 points. Merci! What a perfect wine in every way this is!

The Grill Dinner: Initially, lots of oak and minerality along with lean stone fruit and orchard fruit. Oak was a bit of a mess until 30 minutes in, reintegrating into a beautiful GG with ripe green fruits and lean peach, backing of vanilla and cedar. Slightly rounder than what I was expecting, the wine still showed good precision and restraint. An ever so tinge of that Riesling sweetness on the long finish. Could use slightly more acid, but still enjoyable. I'm not sure how this will age, but probably a GG for earlier drinking considering the vintage as well.

    Personally don't think the alcohol % will be a detractor for a wine of this style (eg. overwhelmingly hot and pruny notes in older Parker style Napas).
