2020 Te Mata Estate Coleraine

Hawke's Bay Red Bordeaux Blend more

6/4/2022 - jsperl wrote: 81 points

Drinking this the year of release, so admittedly this is still extremely young.

This shows in the polished neon purple colour. A muted nose, hints of dust and gravel, very bright fruit, but not a lot of interest.

The palette shows its youthfulness, bright fruit, green vegetal notes, and some balsamic vinegar. Not a lot of body, quite soft tannins.

Tasted this at the same time as a 2015 and 2019. The 2019 was the star, and by contrast only managed to highlight how young the 2020 is. Definitely not ready to drink, but looking forward to making the same comparison in 5 or so years. Hoping it lives up to its pedigree.

Light golden color with quite a bit of sheeting on the edges of the glass. Lovely creamy vanilla nose. Flavors are a bit unbalanced at this young age with a significant amount tannins — from the barrels? Because of this, I suspect it'll take another 3 years for those tannins to soften. A Viré-Clessé for the future.

I am so pleased that 5 years after my last bottle, bottle #9 of 12 (originally purchased as futures) is still drinking much like my 2018 tasting note. There is only a faint bricking on the rim.

I still get plum, cigar box and graphite. I am now picking up some tertiary flavor of mushrooms. The tannins are still silky and the finish is long.

I wonder for those with such different experiences if it is storage conditions over 23 years, or such a drastic difference in style (greater ripeness including higher ABV) compared to younger vintages.

Nothing about this tells me this wine won’t go to 2030.

7/27/2020 - Burgland wrote: 79 points

I have tried many white Burgs from this producer and I have never had one that I enjoyed. It is deep yellow in color. The nose is muted and not recognizable as Burgundy. The palate is un-forthcoming and non-descript. Perrieres is my favorite Meursault vineyard because it usually displays racy and very distinct minerality. This wine has none of that. No overt flaws. It is just boring. I kept asking myself, if a domaine is lucky enough to own a piece of this great vineyard, why bother to make Burgundy that could be mistaken for hydroponically grown chardonnay from a hothouse? Cellartracker Wine Rating Assistant says that rating a wine 86-89 means a wine is "very good" and 80 - 85 is "good". 70 - 79 is "below average". Given the greatness of the vineyard, this is not even good, and it is below average for any white Burgundy. I see no upside potential with further aging.

This wine turns magical after a few hours of decanting. Right out of the bottle is a solid winner, but with a little patience, you will be highly rewarded. It has the perfect balance of fruit and mineral with tannins that are not sharp at all. It has to be one of the best values I’ve seen in a while. This wine will get better with age. How much patience do you have?

We had a double blind wine tasting with cabernet or Bordeaux blend wines. One of the wines I was excited to try, was the 2006 clos du val stags leap vineyard. I kept this wine in a wine fridge when I obtained the wine. I was certain that it would be a group favorite. It was an utter disappointment. The nose was nice, with some cherries, vanilla, and oak aromatics. from there it was just bad. It was thin, tannic, and had little fruit to comment on. I am hoping that this was a corked bottle, as I have one more. The score may be generous.

Lots of jammy, black cherry fruit with sandalwood, savory spice and a long, mouthcoating finish."

Popped and poured. Impressive, especially for the price. Oily yellow-gold. Snappy, focused, precise nose of chardonnay fruit. All elements in balance. Cream, fruit, and wood. Nice. The balance continues into the mouth, with good full fruit, decent acid, richness, and harmony. This is remarkable for its price. 4-11-16-8: 89/100.

I opened this bottle, tasted about an hour later and retasted the next day. Didn't decant. An odd bottle perhaps. I'm a member of Chevaliers du Tastevin, the Burgundy wine group, so do appreciate fine Pinot Noir. Maybe the next bottle will be fine (have a vertical going back to 2003).
