1980 Kalin Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara County more

Gorgeous. Amazing wine. I didn't know what to expect when opening this one, as I'd heard interesting things about Kalin. Once I popped and sniffed, though, I was impressed. The cork had a bit of trouble coming out, but nothing a better corkscrew wouldn't have prevented. Plenty of sludge in the bottle but not a lot of tartrate.

Flavour-wise, it's cranberries and earth. Maybe red currant. The secondary notes are there and peeking around form the corner but this is surprisingly young, lively and fresh tasting. The colour was rusty yet red. Light/medium bodied. I almost can't believe it's from Santa Barbara, but this is a real find. No signs of it being at the end of its life, although I have no baseline for this wine.

This wine has absolutely collapsed in the last year. Earlier tastings were delightful, if a bit light, but my last two bottles (one last summer and one in 12/10) had a sharp, acrid finish, very acidic, with no fruit left and no smoothness left - just bitter and thin. If you have any left, drink ASAP or cook with it.

One can only imagine how mediocre this wine would have been had it *not* experienced the magic of a sensitive crystallization screening process. Most of this bottle is going into the freezer for another day - let's see what *that* crystallization does. Update: just as lame once thawed and used for cooking.
