Bright & zippy with nice mineral and floral elements. Opened during a backyard BBQ and couldn't have been happier.

7/25/2015 6:12:00 PM - depends on what you're looking for, i suppose. i think it still retains some of its youthful freshness right now, but the tertiary flavors haven't emerged yet. give it another few years to build out those tertiary flavors a bit more if that's your cup of tea. i'd say it'll start to slowly decline in about 10 years.

2009 Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Les Motelles

Cabernet Franc more

Nose was pretty closed down showing just a bit of pomegranate and roses. Even after 3-4 hours of decanting this was, essentially, a one-note wine with the pomegranate tone sticking around. The mouthfeel was the best part of this wine...tannins were soft and the body was very lightweight and airy.

1993 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Ferrington Vineyard

Anderson Valley more

Would never had guessed this was 21 years old. Color was dark, the perfume developed a gorgeous spicy note with air, and the palate was fresh with a lot of grip. Beautiful berries, damp earth, and violets on the a perfect place.

2012 Sandlands Chenin Blanc

Amador County more

10/31/2014 - tooch wrote: 89 points

Lots of lanolin and floral notes on the nose. The palate had a peachy/banana note to it, a touch of cream, some leesy notes, and nice acidity. A sleek but rich Chenin...very nice.

2010 Château Lynch-Bages

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

UGC Chicago (The Drake Hotel - Chicago, IL): The Lynch Bages of recent vintages have seemed more sappy, modern and hedonistic than the lovely wines of yesteryear. This fits into that hedonistic model. Fruit was sappy, gummy and dark. Just didn't have that sense of place and was over oaked and smokey. Disappointing.

4/27/2013 6:19:00 AM - A flawed wine would get a flawed rating. This was an average wine, so it got an average rating.

10/26/2014 1:20:00 PM - Benjimon's original note to me was, "Wow! Now I won't buy this wine! You could be totally correct and everyone else can be totally wrong. Thank god I stumbled upon this highly informative and accurate note!"

Didn't want the rest of that to be removed.

2010 Domaine de Chevalier

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend more

1/23/2013 - tooch wrote: 72 points

UGC Chicago (The Drake Hotel - Chicago, IL): Surprisingly, I was not a fan of this. Where were the smokey minerals? Where did all the Graves flavors and feel go? Dang...just a lot of heat and blackberries on the nose with vanilla, oak and black fruit on the palate. Big disappointment.

9/8/2014 6:15:00 AM - hey kris g - i consider myself a big fan of domaine de chevalier, but on this day it was an average wine. feel free to block my notes in the future if you don't find them valuable.

Goodbye to Izzy & Rachel (and Meyer!) (Domaine Wine Storage - Chicago, IL): From magnum. Beautiful from start to finish. Izzy gave the magnum a shake and I think it really helped liven the wine up. The nose was gorgeous with loads of peaches, smokey mangos, and lychee. Fresh, pure, stately. I was surprised how accessible this was already.

Infanticide!!! (Publican, Chicago IL): nose: completely overblown and over ripe nose with tones of black fruits, oak, black marker tones and lots of liqueur. This wasn't all too enjoyable on the nose.

taste: full bodied with good supporting tannins, but there is a good amount of heat on this as well. Extremely ripe and rich with overblown tones of black fruits, black marker, and lots of oak.

overall: this was far from my cup of tea. I wonder how it will be in the future, but it was over ripe and over blown. Others at the table liked this, I was the opposite.

2010 Château Poujeaux

Moulis en Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more

1/23/2013 - tooch wrote: 75 points

UGC Chicago (The Drake Hotel - Chicago, IL): I had been tempted to buy other vintages of this at Binny's given the price and its scores. Glad I haven't. Overall, the fruits are dried out with a fair bit of menthol on the nose. Palate was dark and dense - blackberries, smokey earth, and sour cherries. Not my style.

1998 Penfolds Grange

South Australia Shiraz Blend, Syrah more

6/9/2012 - tooch wrote: 84 points

Acker Auction (Waldorf Astoria - Chicago, IL): Wasn't a huge fan of this. The nose was nice with meaty notes, dark fruit, and lilacs. The palate, on the other hand, was sickingly sweet and candied. Given the other beautiful wines at the table, I poured this out to focus on the other stuff!

  • Comment posted by tooch:

1/24/2013 5:05:00 PM - No, I had the Grange...that's the beautiful thing about wine; taste is 100% sunjective.

2010 Éric Texier Côtes du Rhône Saint-Julien-en-Saint-Alban Vieille Serine Domaine de Pergaud

This wine wasn't pure, elegant and sexy when I opened it. I sat here drinking it, referencing Zach and Salil's notes thinking, "wtf is wrong with me...". Fastforward to hour 4 and things are starting to make sense. The aromas have become more floral and while the dark fruit is still there in spades, they're augmented by iodine and iron notes that are really nice. Palate has this wildness to it with gamey flavors that mingle with softer floral-driven notes that soften the masculine core. I see good things ahead for this wine.
